Hey, thanks for your input!

Reading up on these cameras is a bit overhelming with all the terminology, etc... I have been reading dpreview.com about the Canon and Nikon, but didn't even think to look at the Pentax yet.

Is there something that jumps out as a benifit of the Penta over the other two?

Thanks again.

EDIT: One other quick question.. would you rule out Olympus DSLRs? I was thinking about waiting to see what the E510 that is due out in a coupld of months will be like.

I saw that Kerrisdale Cameras had one in stock, as does Broadway and Leo's. Just go there and try out all the ones you have in mind. The canon G7 or S3 IS may also fit your bill.

Im looking at an Olympus E500 @ Futureshop. Its onsale for $599. My question is, is this a decent camera? This would be my first SLR so I really have no idea what is good or not. Please someone help me!! I just dont want to spend a huge amount of money then regret getting it.

i don't really like olympus, but thats cuz i do a lot of low light and whenever i shoot olympus they tend to come out with more noise.

but for 599 on the two lens kit, why not

thanks huck duck, I was reading that same thing on some reviews, the picture gets noisey at higher iso ratings. I dont think that will be much of a concern for me cause I will mostly be using the camera for outdoors daytime picture taking.

oh yeah i also forgot to mention, olympus uses the 4/3 mount...i hope you already knew this though.

i don't know much about the future of the 4/3 mount...heck i barely know anythin about the 4/3 mount. its something you might wanna check, i don't know what the lens selection is like and how long 4/3 will be around

I'm not a big fan of the 4/3 system. I like the 3:2 aspect ratio better. the viewfinder of that camera is tiny, it's unforgivable if you're going to do a lot of macro work which requires one to manual focus. The best thing going for the 4/3 system are the Leica lenses...holy shit, are they sharp! I tried the Leica f/2.8-3.5/14-50mm ASPH at Leo's on a Panasonic L1 and it's unholy in sharpness, colour and contrast. If you're going to do a lot of portraiture, landscape or street, then this system (and the Leica lens!) is more than adequate for your needs. Also, with an adaptor, you can use any Leica R mount lens! A 14-150mm f3.5-5.6 was just announced also.

Really, that lens should be made for all major SLR mounts. It's that good.

Alright so..I lost my FX01.
Need a new camera for summer.

Looking at the SD1000 because its cheap. But should I consider one with IS? Most shots will generally be indoor (clubs, house parties)

Digital Camera Shutter Lag Comparison

http://www.cameras.co.uk/html/shutte...omparisons.cfm

this should be one "deal or no deal" kind of feature of a camera that is almost never talked about even in proper reviews

The Maxxum 4 is a fairly basic, entry level camera. It might make a good beginner's camera. Used lens prices are quite cheap except for the pro level lenses. What lens/es will be coming with it?

55mm uv is the filter and diameter... that's not the size of the lens

$85 is a good deal, I think. 28-100? If it's a Minolta lens, it's one of the newer ones...quite sharp, and it's also a 'D' lens. That means it takes into account the distance to the object to determine the right amount of power the flash needs to illuminate the subject properly.

The 4 has a 14 segment honeycomb metering pattern that is really quite excellent.

I've never used a 4, but I do own the Maxxum 7, which is a kick ass camera.

@Boxeraddict RE:your edited post

I personally would rule out the olympus dSLR. I've shot with 2 or 3 different ones and i really don't like them. unless you're like Ender and are looking at the 2 lens kit for the low low price, i'd avoid them. of course thats cuz i shoot a lot of indoor and low light. i hvn't shot extensively with it outside.

i also want to compare the olympus 330 to the Lumix F1. considering they're essentially the same camera, but the F1 has the benefit of the leica lens. I almost want to take the leica lens and use that as my test lens for the two bodies. but i have to get the hookups at school to get my hands on that piece.

The new Oly has much improved low light capabilities.
