It is mostly aesthetics. You're not going to notice the difference in IQ with the 2 megapixel difference, unless you print large enough and take an xt version and compare it side by side.

Now, if you plan on purchasing a new lens, other than the kit lens (the one that comes with it), you could get the XT and save yourself a few bucks for a better/different lens.

Hey guys

I'm planning to backpacking in Europe in the middle of next year. I would like to get nice Digital SLR that would capture all the memories of that trip. Looking for something that can zoom into more detail than 55mm. Low/mid level digital cameras won't be accepted. Anyways, any recommendations under $1,500 ?

I dunno, but you could go for a Nikon D80 with the kit lens, 18-70mm or the cheap 18-135. Or maybe a D40 with the 18-55kit lens plus the 55-200VR.

Futureshop had a deal with the Canon XTi kit plus a 55-200 or 70-300, I forget which one for less than your budget range.

So...you want a (new?) high end camera for less than $1500...with a decent mid-range telephoto....not gonna happen.

The camera will not "capture all the memories" of your trip. YOU WILL. The camera is just a tool to enable you to do that, so it doesn't matter what brand you buy.

Might as well just get a really good point and shoot like the Canon 850IS... SO much easier to bring around when you're backpacking!

Alrite, after talking to some pros at futureshop, best buy and some friends that know their cameras, I've been suggested to go for the Canon Rebel XTi.

Thing was I was orginally going to get it from this electronic store on the corner of 54th and victoria. They were going to sell me the camera for $599 (body only) and the 18-55mm lens is another $150. The store is called Multiple Electronics and the guy who helped me didn't really show me the camera package and I felt the place was a bit fishy.

So the other place I found the camera was at London Drugs. I saw the camera for sale for $1,049.98. The deal included the camera, the 18-55mm lens and also the 75-300mm lens as a package deal.

So would you guys agree that i should get the deal at london drugs, since it's a bigger organization and more credible?

the word "Pro" and the words "Futureshop and BestBuy" should never go together. lol

get the camera from a local camera store like Leo's, Lens and Shutter, or Kerrisdale Camera... people that work there will know more about cameras than your "pros" from Futureshop and Bestbuy, and they can also pricematch any deal that you found locally from any big box store.

Looking to pick up either a Nikon D40 or Olympus E-410 in the next week or so.

I'm mainly concerned about the ergonomics and features over number of MP. Anyone think the Live-View on the E-410 would make it a significantly better buy? Does anyone have any thoughts on the unconventional camera grip on the E-410?

The one thing about the 4/3 sensor cameras (Olympus, Panasonic, Leica) is the size of the sensor. It's smaller than APS-C or 35mm size..the lenses are also made to cater to this smaller size. This means more DoF than the other formats. If you want to take a portrait with as shallow a DoF that a 200mm f2.8 lens on a 35mm system will give you, you won't get it with the 4/3 cameras.

Wow that's good to know, thanks for telling me.
Are there any advantages to the 4/3 sensor at all, or is it just cost-cutting?

Costco has the D40x with 18-55 for $779. They also have the canon XT with 18-55 & 55-200 for $799.

So, it looks like BestBuy dropped the prices on a bunch of their cameras so that brings me to ask this question:

D40x or the Rebel XTi?

My cousin said that the XTi performs better in low light situations and from what I've gathered it also has 9 AF points as well as a higher FPS.

Is the XTi worth the extra $70? ($700 for D40x, $770 for XTi @ Bestbuy)

I think the d40x outperforms the XTi in low light. The D40 was about the same, if not a bit worse. The deal breaker here is that the D40/D40x cannot AF with the non-AFS/AFD lenses.

Hey guys,

I'm back in the market for a camera, however, this time, a P&S. I have the Nikon Coolpix S200 in mind for its sleek and slim design. However, it lacks certain features such as manual mode and I've seen some reviews with poor macro mode. Of course, this all goes hand in hand with the size of the camera and the lens being used. On the other hand, at $189.95 MSRP, I'm not sure if I could go wrong.

On the flipside of things, I noticed that Future Shop, Best Buy and the other big box merchants have a sale on a select bunch of Canon P&S, more speciically, the ones Mananetwork posted above. I have my eye on the SD750 since it has the features I'm looking for, however, at $100 more and is not as sleek and slim as compared to the Nikon Coolpix S200. My biggest gripe with Canon is that there are too many different models as Mananetwork mentioned. I can't lay my finger on a particular model and their features/price ratio aren't exactly working in my favour. The Nikon Coolpix S50 suits my needs, fits into an Altoids box, however, $100 more and poor to okay battery life.

Here is where I need your help as I will list my priorities in order and what I'll be using it for:
  • Size (smaller is better)
  • Cost (cheaper is better)
  • Features (would like to have manual mode and acceptable macro mode but I can sacrifice it for the above two)
  • Travel - I travel a lot for work and I do a lot of mileage runs with different airline carriers and I'm in a lot of different cities any given time of the week. I've picked up a rather different hobby of documenting different airlines, airports, lounges and such facilities. I also will be going out to town either day or night to explore when given the opportunity.
  • Silly photos here and there say for example, taking a photo and posting it on the Buy/Sell forums for something I'm selling or documenting progress of my Vespa restoral
  • Other common uses i.e events, birthdays, get-togethers etc.
  • What I don't want is a camera that will NOT fit into my pocket. The last thing I want is a dSLR walking around in Compton, Los Angeles or lugging it around in say Lodz, Poland. I did that once in Austria, which was fine, nothing happened, but I was so paranoid something stupid would happen i.e. getting mugged, dropping it etc. and carrying it around was such a pain in the arse! I want something I can easily pull out of my pocket and snap a pic of say, a cool and exotic car or some hot Czech girl walking down the street.

I hope that lays out for you as to what I'm looking for. I'm open to suggestions as to different kinds of cameras available on the market and I have no qualms with any particular brand/make. My budget is no more than $300 however, if it means making the extra $50 sacrifice, I will. I'm not looking to keep this camera forever and there is a likely chance that I'll probably lose it or use and abuse it to the point that it breaks on me so I don't want to dump a tonne of money into something I will likely break or lose, hence, cheaper is better.

Thanks!

$300 will get you a decent P&S. Have a look at the Fuji F50 fd or Z10fd.

The Canon SD 850 IS seems to be good, but might be at the linits of what you want to pay.
