$300 before or after tax? Try looking at Kerrisdale Camera, Broadway Cameras websites.

The new kit lens for the D40x now has VR doesn't it? If that's true, then the D40x kit blows away the XTi. Both are great entry level cameras, but the 18-55mm kit lens on the Xti is renowned for being a POS. However, the XTi can use any EF or EF-S lens will full AF capability...the D40x will not AF with pre-AFS/AFD lenses.

No, it's the in-camera processing of some canons that result in the somewhat softer JPEGs.

The XTi has really soft JPEG's for some reason.

Olympus E-510... Thoughts?

Seems to get a good review on dpreview and the sample photos look great with the 14-42 kit lens, but I am unsure about the four-thirds lens system and the availability of lenses.

Futureshop has it on sale for $649

Good buy for an entry-level DSLR for someone who isn't all that serious about photography but just wants to take some great pics? Or should I be looking at the XTi for $100 more?

Thanks!

^ my sister has it... if you can get a hold of nice lens, then the 2x crop factor on the sensor is either a blessing or a curse.

if you just want to take better pictures then a point and shoot, go ahead.

if you get addicted, or if you want to be able to continue taking pictures and have more choice ..then spring the extra money for a canon XTi or a nikon d50 (if you can find it!)

RE: the D40x.. is the lack of an AF drive motor really a big deal? Does it make for more expensive lenses than say the XTi?

I am also curious to know if the 3 point AF system is undesirable over the XTI's 20 something point system.

the AF isn't lacking, it just doesn't have the AF screw that is used on non AF-S AF-D lenses. All it does is limit your choices to newer lenses. The only people this really affects are owners of Older lenses, or if you're looking into buyin older / used lenses

XTi has 9 af points not 20

thanks for clarifying it..

So is there much of a difference between the 9 and 3 point AF? What advantage does the 9 give me over the 3?

Hmm.. looks like the D40x doesn't have auto exposure bracketing, so if I want to do some nice HDR's it looks like I should go to the XTi...

nine af points means you have a wider range of compositional options. of course, you could always cheat (as i do) and use the center focus point, focus lock, and recompose.

i don't know anything about HDRs so i can't comment. but you are correct in saying there is no AEB on the d40x

Err, use it in manual mode.

That's a good thing. Each button has one function, so you don't have to dig into layers of menus like canon/Sony/Olympus cameras.

One thing I noticed is when I move the camera around I can hear something moving inside of it.. perhaps the same thing that moves when it does the dust removal procedure... it doesn't sound like a small part that is loose, more like the whole sensor thing moving around.. could it be moutned freely like that as part of the shake reduction?

Yep.

The amazing thing about the Pentax SR system is that not only does it correct for L, R, up, down movements, it also corrects for backwards and forwards movements that can come in handy for macro work.

What would you guys recommend for a sub $250 range, slim/tiny P&S camera that takes good pics. I already have a dSLR. I want something compact so I can stick it in my pocket, take pics when I'm snowboarding, etc and still give me better pics than what a cell phone would do.
