+1.
I found there to be a huge difference between my friend's XTi and my K10D. I found the user interface clumsy on the XTi where everything is right at hand with the K10. Its a bigger camera so it feels better in my hands too.

any more suggestions would be great, btw price range is 1000-1500 for camera and at least one lens | it's been mentioned but I just want to throw it out that if you are considering the kit lenses for the xti/xsi, I would get the xsi just for the nicer kit lens. body vs body I would have a harder time deciding.

The XTi isn't THAT old (yet). I don't think the XSi is that different though, so you should be able to get a good feel for it by trying out an XTi.
And boxeraddict makes a good point too, there are others besides just Nikon and Canon. A friend of mine went shopping using this same advice and ended up with a Pentax *ist. Give some other brands a look as well, but do keep in mind the differences in accessory availability, since others may not have the same availability of flashes, lenses, etc.

The new Nikon VR kit lens is head & shoulders above the older non-VR version and the canon kit lens.

Well, just got my 40D last night (thanks to phatpower for picking that up for me). Kerrisdale matched Lens & Shutter's ad for the 40D/EF-S 17-85 IS kit and the battery grip. Actually ended up being a little cheaper when all was said and done, I think. Played with it a little last night... looking forward to maybe getting out in the new Jeep tonight and finding some cool out-of-the-way spots for pics

I haven't used the DSC-H1 yet, but seems like an interesting entry from Sony in the IS field. I wouldn't go with Sony....yet....in this area; afterall, it *is* their first product with IS.
F717? I love it If I had the money, I'd even keep it. Great lens, great camera overall. Has Nightshot too, so in the case of you wanting to ever get more serious with photography, you can also try your hand at infrared photography as well. Zoom is "by wire", so you never actually have a lens that protrudes when you zoom. Only downside to this camera (as with any other camera that you've listed), is higher noise levels with higher ISO's. | agreed.........................this guy knows his stuff!

does warrenty come in handy??
canon's only have 1 yr warranty on body and lens
and nikon has 2 yrs on body and 5 yrs on lens
I finally got the opportunity to look at the XSi today and it's pretty nice, i've got big hands and it feels better in my hands, whereas the nikon D60 felt quiet small, never realized how small it was, although the guy helping me said smaller isn't necessarily a bad thing, he said since it's smaller, u can wrap her hands around it better so that it is more sturdy when u take pics, is this true?

Really depends on you. I find my brother's XT (an even smaller body) hard to hold steady. More weight to the camera means more inertia, which for me makes my 40D with battery grip (and even the 300D before it, also with battery grip) a lot steadier.
Once again, the important thing is for YOU to try both of them out, and decide which works better FOR YOU.

should the warranty play a factor though? i was really surprised that the warranty for both brands weren't the same or very similar

I dunno, guess it depends on how you look at it... whether you figure that longer warranty means that manufacturer is more confident that its product won't have issues... or that it means they expect it WILL so they're covering their asses for a longer period.
My 300D Digital Rebel lasted a good four and a half years and over 30,000 shutter actuations before it developed any kind of issues that would require repair...

I'm looking to get a nice compact camera for my trip to Europe. I don't want anything huge (D-SLR) but something that can fit in my pocket but also takes nice quality pics.
I'm thinking the Canon SD890IS....anything else in that range?

Hayter, go back a page and read my post here: http://www.revscene.net/forums/showp...postcount=1074
There's no real right or wrong answer as to what DSLR is right for her... that's something she needs to figure out for herself.

Hey, im thinking of buying a slr camera in the philippines. Which model would be good for a beginner with Slr cameras and is quite affordable. Im mostly looking into the Cannon ones.
Also the same question towards lenses as well.
Thanks

Bartone: Why only canon? Canon: XSi. Nikon: D60. Sony: A350
Adrimin: 300 clams for a D50? I say it's a good deal.

Unfortunately the camera stores here have stopped selling it a while ago and only stock the D40x.
Looks like I'm getting the D50 then!

Anyone own a Sony A200K? http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/prodde...gon=&langid=EN
This looks to be a good deal. I'm looking for something in this price range, that will take good pictures.
