Edit- Only comes with the body and accessories (no lens)

Check around CL, you can often find D70's for $300-400.

What is the difference between the Sony a200k and the a300k?

Other than $50?

Are these good camera's compared to the similar priced Canon's etc?

Senna4ever 08-03-2008 06:28 PM

A200 is 10.2MP CCD, the A300 is 10.8MP CMOS, I think.

They're virtually identical, but the A300 has the newer sensor, as the A200 has the same sensor as the A100. The Sony's have the most advanced dynamic range out of any of the makers now, but they do have slightly higher noise. The A200 might be very prone to noise, as the A100 was quite noisy at anything over 800 ISO.

OriginalJC 08-03-2008 08:11 PM

ah I guess the A300 also has live preview, where the A200 does not.

I know nothing about DSLR's, and I was at best buy checking them out. The A300 did feel pretty good, and the features of the camera seems good. The live preview was really nice

Where does sony sit in terms of photo quality compared to it's competitors?

Senna4ever 08-04-2008 10:13 AM

The A350 has live view.

Don't go to Best Buy to look at cameras...those sales people know nothing. Go to a proper camera store to see which one you like.

The Sony DSLR's have great image quality except maybe the A200. My friend who has the Nikon D300 likes the JPEG IQ of my A700 more than her D300, possibly because I always have the dynamic range optimizer on all the time. The D300 does have less noise than the a700 at ISO's over 800. The 40D has less dynamic range than the D300 or A700 as we found out, as our friend has one.

OriginalJC 08-04-2008 11:19 AM

I guess the a300 and a200 are the same camera then, other than the a300 having live preview.

The a350 is the 14mp camera.

What about the Canon XSI? I've been looking into that as well.

What type of memory is better for DSLR's? Compact flash or SDHC?
I notice that generall the SDHC are a lot cheaper

[HuCk DuCk] 08-04-2008 05:28 PM

CMOS vs CCD is not the same camera

lilaznviper 08-04-2008 08:15 PM

zerox39 08-04-2008 08:23 PM

im looking to buy an slr. wheres a good place to start?

K-Dub 08-04-2008 08:41 PM

zerox39 08-04-2008 08:43 PM

i wasnt talking about a literal place to buy one. i ment like what kind and make

Marloon 08-04-2008 08:47 PM

thats the same product.

Lens Focal Length | Terminology | Typical Photography
Less than 21 mm | Extreme Wide Angle| Architecture
21-35 mm | Wide Angle | Landscape
35-70 mm | Normal | Street & Documentary
70-135 mm |Medium Telephoto | Portraiture
135-300+ mm | Telephoto | Sports, Bird & Wildlife

On a crop body like the d40, make sure that you multiply the focal length by 1.5 (ie. 18-55 would be 27-82.5) so this lens for beginners, would apply for anything like landscape to portraiture. a perfect focal length for beginners.

Marloon 08-04-2008 08:51 PM

LOL.

what do you want to shoot? we need more info than just "im looking to buy an slr. wheres a good place to start?" There are numerous types of makes. OLYMPUS, CANON, NIKON, SONY, PENTAX, SAMSUNG, SIGMA... numerous makes!

lilaznviper 08-04-2008 08:55 PM

edited internet went down so i couldnt change it

Ronin 08-04-2008 09:01 PM

You really can't go wrong with any cameras these days...there aren't any bad DSLRs. Your choice should depend on which company you want to go with...and that should be based on the features and lenses available. If you feel the features Canon bodies and lenses is best, then that's the one you choose. Same with Nikon, Sony, Pentax, etc.

...god, when is Canon coming out with something as good as the Nikon D3?!

If rumours are correct, then the 5D replacement is going to be released in the fourth quarter of 2008. That camera has to be at least as good as the D700, or else canon will really fall behind. A D3 competitor is probably a year or two away as the MkIII models are relatively new, IMHO. I have a feeling canon was really caught off guard by the D3, D300 and now the D700.

I've shot with the D300, D300 & 5D in a controlled studio environment and I think the D300 surpasses the 5D in almost every aspect of image quality...they're close though, very close.

IMASA 08-06-2008 05:31 AM

Photographybay says Canon is going to announce something on Aug 26th.

It might be this
