Probably overpriced, since with Sony you're generally paying a premium for the name.

I'm taking this photography class as an elective this semester.. just needed some visual arts class. The instructor (ana black anablack.com lol i dunno if anyone has heard of her) said that any newer digital camera is good for this course we're taking. This class is photography and using photoshop basically.I have a 7mp sony I bought last yr that will suffice but she said that an SLR would be awesome and would make my pics look way better.
My question is, is there any half decent entry level SLR cameras out there for like under i duno 6-700 ???? I am a total noob and I dunno maybe photography would be some kind of hobby someday lol.
Or maybe I should use my sony for this class.\
Any insight? Where are the best places to buy cameras online?

Ana Black?!?!?! Holy shit. Withdraw from the class now. She's a ball buster who will shit on your work if she doesn't like it. She's very set in her ways....quite arrogant. We had her for a few lectures last year...everyone hates her. She's also very contradictory...told people they should do their portfolios a certain way, but when they did so, she told them it was the wrong way to do it - AT THE FINAL PORTFOLIO REVIEW! Apparently, there were a few girls that were crying afterwards because they thought they had failed. Thank God we didn't have to face her on the panel this year.
As per your question, take a look at the canon XSi, Nikon D60, D90, Sony A350.

You could get into a new Nikon D40, D40x, or D60 for that, with a kit lens... or a couple of Sony models. Some places will also still have Canon XTs for pretty cheap, because they're a couple generations old.
You have a lot of options if you're not already locked into one system (ie. you don't already have a bunch of Canon or Nikon accessories and lenses). My advice would be to narrow it down to two or three based on your price range, and then... well, I won't retype it all, just look here: http://www.revscene.net/forums/showp...postcount=1074
If possible, consider getting a cheaper body and spending more money on a good lens - a good quality lens will always be usable with a new, better camera in the future.

UFV. This class is an introductory photo class, so I can't see her being too harsh on us.
Ok well I went and searched around a bit.
Sony Alpha 200K - $593 w. tax futureshop. The guy said this was pretty good. Better than the Nikon D40. He said the main difference was that the Sony has the image stabilization feature. And it has way more mp. And it's only $29 more.
Going back to the Sony A200.. For $570 (free shipping) I can get this on ebay brand new:
-Sony Alpha DSLR-A200
-Sony DT 18-70mm f/3.5-5.6 Zoom Lens
-Titanium .45x Wide Angle Lens
-3 Piece HIGH Resolution Filter Kit
-4GB Compact Flash
-USB Compact Flash Card Reader
-Deluxe All Weather Proof Carrying Case
-Deluxe Video & Photo Tripod
-Table Top Tripod
-Professional 3 Pc. Lens Cleaning Kit http://cgi.ebay.ca/NEW-Sony-Alpha-DS...QQcmdZViewItem
Obviously a better deal than futureshop, plus it comes with all this extra stuff. I know you guys never listed this camera, but just wondering your thoughts vs. D40.
Canon XT - Found a few on ebay for around the same price with lens ($500). Actually there is a new one with 11 minutes left in the auction and its current price is only $363 (33 bids).
I thought about the D60, but I don't know if I want to spend that much now

I'd stick with Nikon and Canon. It's easier to find lenses and accessories for them, especially if you're looking for used gear. I believe this camera doesn't have that great high ISO performance. Check the reviews. http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/sonydslra200/page31.asp
I'm a Nikon user but not a fan of the D60, I'd look at a Canon XSi if that's in your budget. The price of the Nikon D80 has dropped quite a bit too.

How is Broadway Camera's reputation with people on this board? I'm looking into getting the D60 as my first camera and they've got the best price on it.

I bought pretty much all of my gear from Broadway camera. They usually have a no GST sale once in a while, but sometimes they jack up their prices during the sale, so really, it's the same.

I read the whole review on that website and they say the D60 isn't that much of a step up from the D40 and D40x. It is however still a good camera for the entry level SLR apparently.
But from reading the reviews from the D60 (which they often compare the D40) and the A200, it sounds like the Sony is the worst out of this group but not by a whole lot.
I found a used D60 on craigslist that is basically brand new for $550.
The XSi is not in my budget.
So which one should I get? A200 or D60?

redliine, go back and read the post I linked you to.
Ultimately, as a beginner, the differences in technology probably won't affect you much. A much bigger concern at this stage is how comfortable each camera is for you to use. If you get one that's going to be confusing to use the menus, or has the controls in hard-to-reach locations, or one that's too heavy, or too small for your hands - in short, if you end up with a camera that's a burden for you to use - then chances are greater that you won't enjoy using it, and that will diminish your enjoyment of photography. It doesn't matter how fancy the camera is, or what anyone else thinks about your choice, if it just ends up sitting on a shelf.
You've narrowed it down to two models based on your criteria - mainly price - so the thing you want to do now is to go to the store, and play with each of them for a while. Play with the controls, snap some shots, look through the menus... nobody else's opinion will tell you which one you're more comfortable with.

As I say, you really won't (well, 99.99999% likely won't) see a difference between the two as far as image quality, especially since we're talking sub-$700 DSLRs. Even as you get into more expensive models, you get more and better features, more bells and whistles, but for the most part, not really big improvements in image quality (other than things like ultra-high ISO performance).
The main determining factor in image quality is your lens - a top quality lens can run 10-20 times the cost of the body - but that's something that can be easily upgraded later, as budget (and interest) allows. Now as someone else noted, going Nikon allows you a broader selection of available lenses in the future, since all Nikon-mount lenses made in the last 50 years will fit... but to me, that's irrelevant if you find the camera uncomfortable to use.
