Yeah, try out the D60 before you decide, it's a smaller camera which you may or may not like. The thing with a smaller camera is that once you put on an external flash and a heavier lens, it doesn't feel that comfortable since you only get to hold onto a small camera. The flip side is, it's a small camera so it's super light to carry around and you can shoot all day without getting tired.

If you don't mind by used and an older model, you can find D70/D70S's pretty cheap on CL as well. They have some pretty nice features that the D40/40X/60's don't have.

Everything seems really overwhelming... all these features and such lol.. good thing I am in this photo class to learn a thing or two and how to edit a bit. Should be a fun semester.. well Fridays anyway :D

I felt out the Sony, it's bigger and overall my hands grasp it a bit better because of its size but generally I found it a bit bulky. When i hold the Nikon, it feels like i've gotta solid grip on it which I liked more. It's like holding a D cup tit vs a B cup. You like the D cuz it just feels right but the B you know you've got a firm grip and there is no fucking way you can let go lol

An 8GB card for $30? Beware of reliability. I personally would not trust it.

She has 2 classes here but I believe she is teaching other places right now as well. Friday will be my second class. Our hw was to simply read the manual of your camera cuz we're going to be going over it. Haha I feel like such a noob. The memory was regular 80. I got a deal on it with the camera.

Oh ya so does broadwaycamera have the d60 priced less than 599? If so I can get the difference back from fs. I will call them today I guess.

Edit: I just went ok the fs website and it's the Kingston 8gb memory card. It's $30 for everyone untill sept 11. Now I don't feel as great lol oh well. The reg price is still 80

Broadway Camera had the D60 w/ 18-55mm lens for $562.99 last week but I just checked yesterday and it bumped back up to $629.99

I own a D40X which is basically a D60 without the self-sensor cleaning function.

edit; i saw your photos in that picture thread.. i especially liked the one after your mazda was freshly waxed. Amazing reflection off the paint.

I feel the size is good for travel, pair it up with the kit lens and it's super light, put on a 18-200 and it's the ultimate travel camera. However, with it's small size, I find it uncomfortable to use all day when you have an external flash and a heavier lens, it just feels unbalanced. There isn't much camera to hold onto and it gets really forward heavy.

I use my D200 pretty much all the time, but use the D40X when I want to travel light or when I'm too lazy to switch lenses.

If you ever want to shoot with primes, you'll soon hate the fact that the D60 can only use AF-S/HSM primes, which at the moment, are either limited or $$$$.

Definately go pick up a wireless remote for your camera. Best $25 you've ever spent.

Well i've had 3 classes with her so far. So far we have gone over the camera and the major functions and settings of it.. we've also gone over lighting basics, photoshop basics and lastly we looked at a bunch of slides of art and photography and a brief history of it all.

From the sounds of it, Ana is really passionate about photography and she is really educated and experienced. I like her a lot so far because of this.

Our hw for fri is to shoot some straight photography.. 3 images that all relate to eachother in some shape or form. I dunno what to do. She said it just has to be 'interesting everyday things'.. its so general that I have no idea what my pictures should be.

I own a D60.. i'm liking it.. my first slr so i'm still new to it.

I've dumped my kit lense and picked up a 18-200mm Nikkor. Weight wise its alittle unbalanced (lense is heavy) but i only got room for a small set up so i picked the D60/18-200 mm combo as space and size was important to me as i'm bringing it backpacking with me for 18 months.

i'd say start a new thread, as if you're lookin for subjects, this thread is gonna get way off topic.

A bit off topic but I'm guessing most people would invest in a decent bag to hold and protect their camera investment. I'm just looking around and it seems like Lowepro is the best? Are there other brands I should consider? What's more practical, the backpack style or over the shoulder bags?

Eventually, you'll have several bags. A backpack when you want to carry all your gear and a shoulder bag when you want to travel lighter. I use Crumpler because I prefer their style over Lowepro.

I'm not going to sticky them, but people should learn to use the search.

what is a good starting out DSLR camera and that can last me at least a couple years and wont be outdated. For about 800-900$

Sad thing is, all current camera will be outdated in 2 years.

A good starter camera now would be a canon XSi, Nikon D60, Sony A350...maybe take a look at the new Panasonic G1 too.

If you're going to consider the Nikon system, I'd highly recommend the D80 body only vs getting a D60 kit.

Need your opinions guys. I've read a lot about this on other forums/websites, but interested to see what you all have to say. Should I get the canon 40D or the new Nikon D90? This will be my first DSLR so I don't own any lens from either of them. I will most likely be taking more portraits/landscape/still life pics than sports. Any opinions and suggestions are welcomed! Best advice, go to a store and see how the cameras feel like in your hand.
Pick up a Canon 40D...and pick up a Nikon D80 (don't know if stores have the D90 in stock already).
Ergonomics, layout, menu gui, etc. Figure out which one you like better.

Really, if you're starting from nothing, you can't go wrong with either.

There's other brands too.. Sony.. Pentax..Olympus..

The other thing to consider, if you can afford it, is to put more money into a GOOD lens or two rather than the kit lens. Camera technology is changing almost daily. Basic lens design hasn't changed much in 100 years. A good quality lens will always serve you well, and you can upgrade the body later as your budget allows and your need demands.
