nope! who said that 8mp is bad? I know plenty of XT users, and they LOVE their camera. i like that info screen above the screen. its great!

the 1.8" screen isn't amazing but its perfect for checking composition, photo info and b/w and color histograms. So no. The camera is great. i've seen some being sold for 300-350. thats a good deal.

Heck, even the original Digital Rebel is a damn fine little camera. I mean, I LOVE my 40D, but there's nothing wrong with the 300D

If you've never used a DSLR before, an XT is a GREAT camera to learn off of. I used one for about a year, but outgrew it and upgraded to a 20D, which came from the same era.

If this is not your first DSLR, try looking around for a used 20D or 30D as they're quite decently priced. My only gripe w/ the 20D is the small screen.

I wanting to get into the DSLR fun as well. Went to look at a few and held them etc..

The guy at FS said this was a decent starter?

http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/pro...gon=&langid=EN

What do you guys think? I didn't mind the Nikon D40 but since it's been around for awhile already, is it going to be relevant?

Should I just stick to the Cannon XS, XSI, D40, D60 ? Sorry for the questions but want to be sure before I pull the trigger I purchase something.

TIA

hey guys, I'm considering getting a new point and shoot camera. Two of my buddies have DSLRs I personally would rather not want to get a DSLR as it gets to expensive. I'm looking for something under $300 after tax, could be used or new. What would you guys suggest? I want something that takes good crisp photos, pretty much as close to a DSLR as you can get with a point and shoot. Any advice would be nice.

If you can afford a little more ... and willing to sacrifice the zoom capabilities ... then take a look at the Panasonic LX3. I am trying so hard to buy this camera, but it isn't even in stock for the "recession" price of $409USD (BH Photo) or $550cdn (London Drugs). The MSRP is $499 USD ... which is what Amazon.com has it for right now. I had one on hold at BH Photo, but hesitated and they closed and told me to call back the next day ... well its now backordered till who knows when! Locally, the vendors aren't getting stock till March!

I was going to get the TZ5 until I saw the reviews for the LX3. The TZ5 is also a great camera (for a compact) ... the LX3 is just cooler =) I saw the TZ5 at Costco in the USA for $239USD ... I think that was with a $30 instant rebate ... pretty good if you are on a overnight trip.

Not gonna happen for under $300. You'll need to go into the $500 range for anything that even approaches DSLR quality. The only P&S cameras that come close is the Panasonic LX3, Leica DLUX 4, Sigma DP1/DP2 models.

The Panasonic factory that produces the LX3 is shut down due to some sort of problem, apparently. You can get the Leica DLUX4, but it costs a few hundred more.

Right now Im really diggin the Panasonic DMC TZ5, a lot of people love it from the reviews. Good looking overall camera, seems idiot proof, and seems like it should do the job well. Not to bad of a price too. I'll look into a bit more. For those of you who own one of these, how do you guys like it? Seems like a good point and shoot, good looking camera as well.

Anyone here have the Leica D-Lux 4? Thoughts on the camera? I'm looking for a compact quality camera to take with me when I go to Australia in the summer. Suggestions?

The Leica D-Lux4 is a great camera, but it is quite a bit more expensive than its Panasonic LX3 twin. Leica did reduce the price, but you're still going to be paying a premium for the Leica name. You do get more comprehensive software and a longer warranty though. It's an excellent P&S with a larger sensor than almost all P&S models out there. There's even a new limited edition titanium model that looks super sexy (I like titanium!).

If anyone is wondering why the Panasonic LX3 is nowhere to be found in the city, it's because the factory is apparently having production problems. Looks like no new LX3's until March. Canon must be happy, as their G10 sales must be quite good.

I'm thinking about upgrading my camera to either a Canon 40D or a 50D. Which ones would you guys recommend and why?

The 50D is slightly more noisy than the 40D at high ISO, but not by much if that's important.

Just going to re-post my post from another thread, as it may be more relevant in here:

If you can find a Panasonic LX3, them go for it. It has a large sensor compared to its competition, which means more dynamic range, less noise and cleaner images. They're nowhere to be found right now, as the factory was having some kind of problem, but they should be back in store soon. There is the Leica version, the Leica D-Lux4 which is more expensive, but you get better software and a longer warranty. If you're really a baller, they just introduced a titanium bodied D-Lux4 that is super sexy for $1300. O.O The cameras have an amazing Leica lens, but is only a 24-60mm f2.8 equivalent. If you want more zoom range, then see below.

The Canon G10 is a worthy competitor to the LX3, but its image quality in low light is not as good, the lens at the wide end doesn't go as wide, but it has a longer zoom range. Both the Panasonic and Canon have the ability to shoot RAW.

There is a new camera by Fuji that promises to be amazing. The FinePix F200EXR essentially has two CCD sensors that are offset by one pixel. What this enables the camera to do is take two images simultaneously take two exposures and combine them. One side will start an exposure for the shadows, and partway through the exposure, the highlight portion will start taking an exposure so they end at the same time. This way you have a semi-HDR image for an amazingly high dynamic range for a P&S camera.

That's a good starter camera, but for $100 more you may want to look at the XSi, which is IMHO a far better camera, and with this particular bundle comes with a bunch of extra stuff too: http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/prodde...47&catid=20222

In the end though, pick a camera that you'll find enjoyable TO USE. Don't worry so much about the specs and concentrate more on the ergonomics. See below:

is the d60 worth it? compared to say the d40. I've finally saved up enough money to buy either one and I was wondering which one I should go for. I've tried the canon xsi and it doesn't feel as good as the d40. Thank you for anyone that can help
