Finally ready to get a new point and shoot. Bestbuy has a pretty good deal on a Canon Powershot SX110S. It has 9.0MP, and 10x optical zoom. Same specs as the Lumix TZ5 for cheaper, and it's a canon. Our canon is old but it still works. So I kind of want to stick with Canon. Do any of you guys have experience with this camera? I'm really interested.

im looking for a camera around 250. im using it for mostly still photos, plus some low light photos. image quality is mainly looking for, size/portability doesn't really matter. what do you guys suggest

I don't know much but, I'm in the same situation as you pretty much. I think the Panasonic Lumix or Canon Powershot SX110IS is a good choice. Right now I'm leaning to the powershot. It looks sick!

Looking at the D40 and the D60 as a first DSLR camera, and can anyone tell me is the D60 alot better than the D40 for the price difference?

Lol I asked the same question and I got no responses. Um however from some people I've asked, it appears that the d60 isn't really worth the extra cash.

You do get more resolution over the D40 which will come in handy when cropping plus the sensor cleaning, which I think is well worth the added price. The LCD display is also much improved.

If that's the case, then the Canon Rebel XS or the Nikon D60?

I am planning to get a 5D (mark 1). I noticed that many stores and websites does not sell it anymore. Even if they do, they sell it for 2k or so (when it's around 1.2-1.4k on craigslist (used) )

Does anyone know where/how I can get a new one in a decent price. Even if it's a used one, is there anyway i could check the auctuation?

The 5D is not in production anymore, so you won't find any new bodies in stock in any store. I sold a few used ones for about $900 - 1250, but they sell as soon as they come in. You cannot check total actuations with the 5D's like you can with the 1D models.

I was wondeirng how do you check the accutations in general for these cameras?
Do you look at the file number count through the computer?

Some cameras record a shutter count on the EXIF of the JPG/RAW files. My D200 does but I don't believe my D40X does. But I'm not sure if you can reset these.

So I went to Broadway Camera to take a look at some beginner DSLR cameras and tried out a couple..

The Rebel XSi & the D60. Both felt great, kinda liked how compact the D60 is but I see they have a "good deal" on the Sony A200.

How is the Sony A200 compared to the D40, D60, & the Rebel XS? I've been hearing that the D40 is pretty outdated and it's worth the few bucks to buy the D60 but the A200 looks appealing.

Any suggestions?

I bought my buddy the LZ8 for christmas, he's pretty pleased with it, but I don't know how much of a test he has given it so far.

So, I'm leaning towards the purchase of a new camera... a DSLR this time around.

I've been looking at reviews and specs on the various cameras, and I've basically narrowed it down to the following in terms of price range/features/lenses.

Olympus E-volt E520
Sony A300k/A350k
Nikon D60
Canon Rebel XSi

I like the liveview features of the Sony and Olympus cameras as well as their in-body image stabilization.
The dust-cleaning lenses of the Nikon and Olympus stand out, but then, the image quality is something I'm curious about.

How do Olympus and Sony stand up to Nikon/Canon in those terms?

I'm hoping to keep under a $1000 budget with a lens kit, so right now, the most appealing in terms of price is the Olympus e-520.

In terms of memory, I'd like to have SDHC capability, so that would narrow it down to the Nikon/Canon offerings, but I'm not averse to choosing Sony/Olympus and having to get some CF cards.

Any recommendations based on experience, that would cause anyone to shy away from or lean towards any particular models?

I should mention the Olympus takes about a second from on-time to shooting capability because it runs its cleaning cycle any time you turn the camera on. So far as I know, the Nikon is the fastest in terms of "ready" time, and I honestly don't know about the Canon or Sony times.

The Sony, Nikon and canon start up almost instantaneously. They are all good cameras, but the 4/3 sensor of the Olympus is something I'm not fond of. My friend shoots with it and does an amazing job though.

There is not much separating the Sony, Nikon, canon offerings in terms of image quality. The Sony has the best live view system of them all, but the viewfinder is smaller than the others due to that live view system. Canon has the most lenses to choose from, but some of Nikon's new lenses pretty much blow away everything except the Zeiss lenses for the Sony system. Ergonomics are VERY subjective. Go try them out and see which one you like best. I find the placement of the front dial on the Nikons are a bit awkward compared to the Canon & Sony cameras...you may feel different.

I had the Olympus E-510 before I got my D90. It was a great camera to learn on as it was my first DSLR. It was lightweight and very comfortable to use. However, the 4/3 sensor is smaller and its not great in low light and has poor high ISO performance.
