I'm leaning towards a Canon or Nikon, because of the use of SDHC as their storage medium. Is there enough reason (as a first DSLR for myself) to go for the XSi as opposed to the XS? Some of the features I've been researching on the Canons (Liveview, Auto Focus without needing to have a specific AF-S Nikon lens, etc.) are swaying me in that direction.

Do the extra 2mp, .3fps, etc. etc. on the XSi justify spending $200+ more than the XS?

The Nikon D60 w/ stock kit lens is on sale at Futureshop for $579.99 + taxes. I already called Broadway Camera and they said they'll price match it until the sale ends and that's if they (Futureshop) has instore stock.

Kerrisdale:$599.99 - Nikon D60
BC Camera: $619.99 - Nikon D60
Futureshop: $579.99 - Nikon D60

Futureshop also has the Canon XS for $599.99, not sure if that's a sale price though. - Nevermind Broadway Camera has it for $549.99

^Kerrisdale will price-match as well. I recommend them, myself; I've always had great dealings with them.

FS has no stock anywhere of the D60.

I can get the Rebel XS in silver for $490, with the 18-55 IS lens, but everyone seems to think silver is "ewww" and "yuck".

Just debating now if I should get it or wait and see if there are any deals anywhere else over the coming weeks.

I'm leaning towards the Rebel XS as it seems to get better reviews for action/sports photography than the D60. Some of what I'll be using the camera for will involve a lot of quick action shooting, so I was just wondering if there were other reasons to consider the D60 (as all the comments I've seen say it's not as good for fast motion, etc.).

** Update **

Picked up the Rebel XS tonight. $490 with the 18-55 IS lens was enough to seal the deal for me. Now I just need to get a bag for it, and at some point more lenses...

Get rid of that POS of a lens and get the 17mm-55mm f2.8 as soon as you can.

Just as soon as I can afford to, I'll start looking into lenses better than the one in the box. Gotta take baby steps before I can keep my head above water.

okay guys i think its soon for me to upgrade.

Currently I'm using a d80 and most of the lenses i got are DX lenses

i can get either D90 for about 1000cdn, D300 for 1500cdn, d700 for 2800cdn, all of that is cheaper then retail because of a d40 as a trade in. All of them are body only and i really want the d700 but being a full frame (fx format)

give me some insight... i might just get a d90 cause its cheap and works pretty well.

If all or most of your lenses are DX, then a D700 would be a waste.

i want more lenses, but the d90 with the movie mode is pretty cool...

also where can i get my sensor cleaned? the d80 isnt taking as clear of a pics as it use to.

another reason is these are pretty good prices ( i got the d40 for dirt cheap ) so its really worth it to me... and I'm sure I can sell the d80 as well giving me the new camera super cheap

and ya thx senna4ever i kinda figured i shouldn't but its just so tempting at that price

You really have to look at the kind of pictures you take to decide what camera works better. If you at at the tall end alot, DX for sure. My dream is a 50mm + upgraded d700 that can do movie. haha

If you are sticking with DX format, then get d90 unless you really want the feel of a d300. I love how the d300 feels in my hand. But at the end I decided I rather spend that $600 on lens than feel. And d300 is old now, the d90 takes better pictures. Oh if you must go d300, I say wait for d400.

Also if you shot at high iso, upgrade for sure. CMOS > CCD.

Going To Buy The G/F a SLR??

So as it says. Wanting to buy the g/f a SLR she currently has a Olympus (forgot the name but it kinda looks like a SLR) she's really out grown it and I want to get her something that she can take some killer pics with of course.

She shoots a lot of wild life(eagles owls etc) and lots outdoor foresty type pics and Ocean pics. I'm just not sure which one to get her and don't want to get ripped off of course. I'm not a camera guy what can I say.

Here are some she's taken with her camera she has now.

I recently picked up a Nikon D40.
It's widely recommended for newbs so thats what i chose.
As a lens i opted to spend more and get the 18-105 with VR because i figured i could use the extra zoom, and paid about $800 total..
Your GF could probably make due with the 18-55 + 55-200vr kit that's sold. that i believe is about $700~
I would now, however, wait as nikon is apparently releasing new DSLR models tommorow.
