That should always be final deciding factor. There's so little real difference between quality in cameras at any level, it SHOULD ultimately come down to whether or not you ENJOY using the camera.

Ok guys, after about two-three weeks of research, I've finally decided against the T1i (which I originally was going to get) and go for the D5000. The reasons for me was that

1) Felt better in my hand
2) I like the more introductory interface, with plenty of explanation for each setting
3) Nikon has the 2year body and 5 year lens warranty whereas Canon only has 1 year for both

However, along this way there is certain downsides such as
1) I don't get to use awesome Canon lens
2) I'm looking to buy the two lens combo, and for the direct competition, the canon lens would've been 300mm while the nikon lens is only going to be 200mm
3) All D5000 are currently sold out!

Do you guys know where they are offering sales on D5000's with two lens combo sales? Future Shop has one with the 200mm lens @ 999.99$ which I think is a pretty good deal, but they are still currently out of stock :(.

Edit: Does camera places (or FS) do cash sales OR would I be able to talk down prices (even on sale) OR would I be able to levy for memory cards/bags/tripod/filters?

Yeh I saw that deal and kind of wanted to go for it, but I was still doing my research so don't think would've rushed into it anyways. And that was before I tried the D5000 and I really like the feel in my hand a lot more so not much regrets there :haha:

CP.AR 01-11-2010 11:43 AM

oh haha sorry misread your post on the phone ><" I thought you meant you decided to GET the T1i

vietfx 01-11-2010 06:23 PM

I like my T1i a lot, especially after I installed a battery grip. I'm not so much of a nikon fan like my brother. He has a D80/D90/D300S

$_$ 01-13-2010 06:51 PM

Got one of the only two left D5000s @ FS today. Receipt reads as follows:

d5000+18-55mm - 729.99
lcd protector - 9.99
hoya uv filter - 24.99
bag - 79.99
durecell 8gb stage 6 - 34.99

total : 985.55

TOTALLY enjoying the camera today, but still lots to learn :). I always feel like the camera is so fragile and i might break it though. Really excited though! Tell me what you guys think about the pricing on the stuff I got.

Should I upgrade or wait?

Right now I'm using the canon 40D I bought > 2 years ago
Wondering if I should upgrade to the 7D
Or save up and wait to get a 5D MKII

I have 3 lens right now
canon 17-40 F4L
Canon EF-S 55-250 zoom lens
Tokina Fisheye 10-17 F3.5-4.5

I understand that with the 5D i'll be having to spend a lot more money to get new lens as well... so I should probably rule that out especially since my camera equipment is starting to surpass my car in value >.<

I like the 7D but wondering if it's noticably better besides the video capability

Matsuda 02-02-2010 05:56 PM

what are the reasons you need to upgrade from a 40D?

Wouldn't mind a higher res camera. Theres nothing wrong with the pics I take with the 40D, but the video feature on the 7D is tempting too.

But there isn't much point I guess to the 7D..
but i like the full frame 5D MKII but thats 3k... and even a used one is still more than a new 7D

oh wellz i guess this means saving up another year or 2...

Are you looking at doing large prints? I find that using the 40D is a great camera, that performs top notch. There is no need of upgrading unless your going pro. Get some good glass, and some fast primes. i.e. 24-70 f/2.8 L, 50 1.4, etc.

btw how is the 17-40 on the 40D, i am looking at getting that as my next lens.

get a T1i, I think vietfx is selling one... it has video and is quite inexpensive! But i mean, picture quality wise of COURSE it would be nothing compared to a 7D or 5DmkII on some good glass

Senna4ever 02-03-2010 12:41 AM

The T1i is worse image quality wise, as it has more noise than a 40D though.

ddr 02-03-2010 01:43 AM

buy the t1i when the t2i comes out in a bit

+1. Plus if you go FF you'd be ditching 67% of your lens collection.

Considering you'd have to save an additional two years to go FF if you chose that route, you can use those 2 years shooting with new L lenses and your 40D if you bought glass instead. Plus the lenses imo are the better investment of money towards our very expensive hobby. Just my 2 cents.

But I guess if you REALLY want video, there's no avoiding those 2 as they are the two to get in Canon's video/dslr lineup.

haha, i guess you pay for what you get (Rebel vs EOS 'D'). I was looking at CPS requirements the other day (just curious) and I was surprised to find out that the 40D is classified as a pro camera.

Not for long - Canon is tightening CPS requirements later this year. You need to have two pro bodies, and three L lenses to qualify for CPS. A 'pro body' is now classified as a 5D mkII, 1D mkIV & 1Ds mkIII. All current CPS members will have to reapply, and many will not be accepted back into the new CPS.

Yeah not planning to do large prints

The 17-40 is pretty amazing, i've put most of my 9000 clicks on it, it's pretty versatile IMO and the colours are pretty awesome.

LOL i think as far as video goes i'm much better off buying a nice HD camcorder lol

The 50 1.4 sounds attractive, been using my friends 1.8 lately but not a huge fan. I know lots of people who have the 24-70 but I can't afford it right now lol.

Any prime lenses from sigma etc that I should be taking a look at? I do actually need one

Not completely true. The 7d/5dmII are great HD video cameras for the cost- and when you throw in the fact that you can slap on any EOS mount lens for videography, your shooting options are far more diverse than buying a professional (dedicated) HD camera (mind you with a fixed lens).

Many budget oriented videographers are moving to this type of combo because it's so versatile, and compared to a real hd camera, very cost-effective.

True, but a dedicated video camera is much easier to use.

does anyone have an idea where i can go play around with the lx3?
i was hoping to take a look at it at Brentwood LD but they said it was discontinued?!?
is there going to be a better one coming out?

I played around with a s90 and it's nice, just wanted to see the difference between the two before i make a final decision on a point and shoot.

thanks.

Senna4ever 02-05-2010 09:01 PM

Panasonic still lists the LX3 on their dealer website, but there are rumours of it being discontinued and the LX4 announced at PMA in a few weeks.

Matsuda 02-05-2010 09:26 PM

see that's the thing, if you're not going to do large prints, I think your 40D should still suit your needs. Also m3thods is right that if you move to full frame, you may have to get rid of a lot of your lenses that can't be used with a full frame camera. How often would you realistically use the video? Most of the time I forget my camera can do video too :P

My first DSLR was an Olympus E-510, I only had it for about 6 months before I decided to upgrade to the D90. In hindsight, the camera was great to learn on and I probably should of kept it for at least a year before upgrading so quickly. The main reason why I upgraded was I wanted better ISO performance.

I'd say stick with the 40D and spend the money on some nice glass.

XTC_604_DKNY 02-05-2010 09:56 PM

thanks Senna!
i'll just wait a couple weeks to hear if anything new comes up.

I wonder if Nikon will announce their new d700 or something along those lines.

Looks like it. There are also whispers of D4 prototypes being tested at the Super Bowl and Olympics.
