The Z57 isn't slim. If you want slim, get the S500. I have that one (replaced the S100 I had that got damaged from water). Image quality is pretty bleh, but everything else about the camera rocks. It's super fast, tiny, has a nice screen, and has a bunch of pretty useful features.

aha prolly not what you menat for a "new" camera, but im really getting into this photography thing. firs tthings forst im cheap and dont realy wanna spend any more than a couple hundred dollars on a camera. this is why ive decided to start off with an oldschool film camera, this way i can play with shutter speeds and zoom etc to gain some experience before i decide to drop big money on some fancy slr camera. what is a film camera with all these advanced options called? is it just an SLR camera?
who makes a decent film camera that i should look out for and is there any place in particular you thnik i should look for said camera? remember im cheap but i want practice with real settings not jsut my moms cheap point and shoot

if you want all the manual options.. i think you have to go with a SLR.... perhaps not a digital SLR.. though you will spend tons of money developing film !!!
the nikon F55 is not bad.. my dad has that one.. and some of the pictures we took with it.. turned out incredible =)

Jeff you can get a much better film camera than digital for the money, however, it lacks massively in the convenience of digital photography. If I wasn't working fulltime, I feel I may have been better off spending the same amount on a canon film body, however, I'm pleased with my purchase and I enjoy being able to take tons of pics and pick and choose with digital.

I've got a Canon 300D (Digital Rebel). Your impression is right, most local places will sell the low end DSLR's (Rebel XT) for a bit over $1000 right now. Not sure what the Nikon equivalent is at the moment or its price.
I should clarify though, even if you find a used digital SLR that's getting dated, like a Digital Rebel (300D) or a 10D, you're still getting a very capable camera that many folks have put out TONS of great pictures with. I think my camera lacks, but I'd still recommend a newbie to buy one because it has what you need to take good pics and learn with.
I'm not sure what the market is for a used 300D, but I'm sure it's not too bad. I bought mine for 1000 bucks but it came with the kit lens, a 50mm 1.8, a 55-200mm and a 1gb SanDisk Ultra II compact flash card. I bet you could find a body + kit lens for between $600 and $800.
Here's a few snaps I took, if they're bad it's not the camera, it's the user
So again, my suggestion is to buy a used one! I'd look for a 10D, post a wanted ad in the photo-lab buy-sell here and look around in other buy/sell's! People are always upgrading and camera bodies seem to buy and sell pretty quickly, there always seems to be a buyer.

| Olympus E-300 - Panasonic FZ's
Just wondering if anyone here has had any experiences/reviews with the Olympus E-300 or 500 DSLR cameras?
Also if anyone has had any experiences/reviews about the Panasonic FZ4 camera?
I read some reviews on camera guides and stuff, but I would like some first hand reviews from people here!

Alright guys...need some camera crew insight
My parents are currently in Shanghai and will be headed to HK in the next couple of days. They're looking to get a digicam over there because a lot of the electronics over there are cheaper then the prices here.
What's a good camera to get that ranges from $400-$500? We're looking for a camera that has a good mix of everything (size, image quality, functions etc.)
Thanks |

I've had experience with all cameras mentioned and all i can ask is what are you going to be needing out of the camera. Of course the Olympus DSLR is going to be much faster in shutter release and focusing and have more of an SLR feel to it. Money wise if you are not wanting to spend much then go with the Panasonic, but ur comparative camera is priced much much less than the two olympus. Something more compareable would be the FZ30.

I don't think AB Sound has anything else that is similar in prices of these cameras
