Camera newb here,
I need something more portable than an SLR, as I will be doing a lot of travelling with this camera. Something that shoots good landscape shots and does relatively well in low light settings as well. Need something with a decent amount of adjustable settings as I plan on making this a bit of a hobby. Can anyone suggest a good P&S camera with adjustable settings that'll help get me started and wont break then bank? I'm thinking nothing over $400.00
any help would be appreciated,
Thanks

Canon's S90 is quite good, too.
LX3 over S90 though.

Buddy of mine is looking at this rig... thought I'd run it by the collective braintrust here for a second opinion (sounds pretty sexy to me). Only drawback to it is most or all of his exising lenses with the XSi are EF-S, but he figures he'll keep that for a backup/second rig, or maybe add a 7D down the road...
Canon EF 16-35mm F/2.8L II USM
$1,799.99
Canon EF 100-400mm F/4.5-5.6L IS USM
$1,799.88
Canon BG-E6 Battery Grip for EOS 5D Mark II
$369.99
Canon EOS 5D Mark II outfit (24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens )
$3,879.99
Canon Speedlite 580EX II
$559.88
Canon LP-E6 Battery Pack for Canon EOS 5D Mark II
$119.99
Total (before taxes and shipping) $8,529.72

Hmmmm....I'd say ditch the 16-35 and get the 17-40 instead - corners are sharper. Does he really need a grip? I personally hate grips, and especially Canon's, as they are so unergonomic and bulky. Where is he buying the gear? Why is the LP-E6 so damn expensive???

He's shooting just about anything you can think of A lot of landscape stuff, since he lives in Yale and works all alone the Fraser Canyon, but he likes to come down to the zoo at Aldergrove and shoot the wildlife, and wants to get into portrait stuff a bit as well.
He has the grip on his XSi and likes it. I'll pass on the mention of the 17-40, thanks. I believe he's shopping Kerrisdale Cameras in Coquitlam Center, as they've treated him (and me) well in the past.
Oh, and he's decided to go with the 7D instead, so he can use his existing glass (EF-S 10-22 and EF-S 60 macro, in particular), plus it's a little cheaper.
Thanks for the info!

I've currently got my eyes on a D300s and I was wondering if anyone has had experience buying from Gastown Photo down at Waterfront Station? I just happened to be in the area today and the price I was quoted was about $1659, $10 more than Broadway Camera but the clerk behind the counter said they could work something out for me. The thing is they don't have the camera in stock right now so I can't get it the same day.

I'm looking into getting a DSLR for the first time. Previous cameras I have are the Canon PowerShot S3 IS and the PowerShot A20 and even older is an old Epson that had no zoom. The 2 models I'm looking at are the Nikon D5000 and Canon T1i. Most of the shots I'll be taking are of buildings/structures and to a lesser extent, night and sports shots.
I'm gonna do more reading into the types of lenses. Are Canon lenses better then Nikon or vice versa?
Any info would be great. Thanks.

For budget, I was looking to keep it under $1000.
Primary use like I said would be for buildings/structures and landscapes. Secondary would be for sports and low light conditions. The video option is nice, but it wouldn't be a main selling point to me. I'd be looking for a camera that would be versatile.

I'll be paying more locally but at the same time I don't mind supporting local businesses. Another factor is if something does go wrong with the camera I'd much rather have a person in a store to talk to rather than sending emails back and forth with someone on the other side of the country.
Any horror stories for buying cameras at Futureshop? I usually don't like buying anything from them but they're willing to price match. It's pretty much between Futureshop, Gastown or Broadway for me at the moment.

wouldn't FS/BB be the least hassle-free out of any other choices if you already know what you want to get? not to mention you can just return it (within the stipulated period) w/o even explaining if that happens

My dad bought a 3 year extended warranty (worst decision ever) and a year into owning the computer the letters on the keyboard started rubbing off. I found it weird because I've used tons of computers before and this was the only keyboard I've owned to do so. I didn't want my money back, I just wanted them to do a straight swap for something similar and they wouldn't budge even after we bought the 3 year warranty.
I've also had a few other bad experiences at Futureshop hence my reluctance to shop there.
As for Best Buy they don't seem to carry the D300s? I know they're the same company as FS but I've always had decent service at Best Buy. I've been to a few locations and they don't stock that model, can't seem to find it on their website either.

I've also had a few other bad experiences at Futureshop hence my reluctance to shop there. | I've had FS salesdroids lie through their teeth to sell me the extended warranty... and never once have I been able to cash in on it without major hassle (particularly at the Coquitlam Center store, even back when it was on United Blvd).
Best Buy, on the other hand... they'll ask once if you want it, and if you say no, they let it go... and returns/exchanges there have always gone smoothly (at least at the Coquitlam Center store).
It's an amazing contrast for two stores, owned by the same company, situated literally across the street from each other.

Just wait til something goes wrong and you have to return it.
