Like I said it's the same guts. You'd get the G12 if you wanted the manual dials and the sturdier build. The S95 is a great compact and tbh you can't go wrong with either.

Looking for a camera along the lines of Sony NEX or Olympus PEN... or anything of that sort... Any thoughts???

as well... do all those cameras need a separate flash?

Posted in here before but didn't buy a camera yet.. basically I'm a noob with a whole bunch of pretty good nikon lenses (dads lens) what camera should I get?
Budget is 200-300. Most likely getting a d40 if I can find one for 200ish.
What are alternatives? Thanks in advance.

@liquidturbo iirc you had a d40 for sale before? Still avaliable?

the thing you need to look up is if the lenses you own will auto-focus on a body like the d40
nothing wrong with manual focusing... just thought u should know

Sorry, sold the D40. Do NOT get the D80. The D90 is a much bigger step up from the D80. D200 is also ancient in the digicam world.

My vote is a nice used D90. Check for low shutter count and body damage.

If you just want to dick around and learn, might not be bad to get a D40/D40x/D60/D3000/D3100.

oh so I should go against the d200? I thought it was better than the d80.. Metal body too.. I have a sale pending for a d200 right now..
Big change in decision tho
Should I get a canon camera and buy one of those nikon to canon mount adaptors so I can use my nikon lens on the canon camera? Are those mount adaptors reliable?
If I were to get the adapter and a canon camera what canon camera should I get??

^They have been reliable in my experience but I think the best you can get is an AF confirm, I am not sure I only have one I got on ebay for a contax lens. I wouldn't recommend the D90 I have used about 5 or 6 different ones and they have all been unreliable as fuck. Either have to remount the lens or take out the battery constantly, displays stuff like F-- or refuses to shoot. Maybe it's just my bad luck. Neither my 40D or 7D has had any problems like that. Danizer came to help me shoot some pics for prom last year and his D90 died part way into it. Dealt with a lot of bullshit back in high school yearbook with them as well.

Also hate how so many things are backwards (canon fanboy :P)
But seriously why the hell would light meter be + on the left and - on the right, it just makes sense to me that Right is positive :/

The el cheapo adapters suck big time. They're not machined very well, and some won't allow the lens to focus to infinity. The higher end ones will do the trick, but due to the precision machining, they can be quite expensive like the Novoflex ones that are $300ish. I would say get one that is around $100.

D80 isn't too bad. I'm using it right now. Doesn't handle noise too well, but it beats having a blurry image. D200 is almost near identical to the D80 in specs. D90 can shoot video's, so that's an advantage if you are into that stuff 737!.

y would u go canon unless you really liked how they handled or their controls when you have nikon lenses to start with ... what lenses do you actually have?

stretch that budget a bit and get a used d90.

Looks like the d90 is getting a lot of votes eh? Photography for me is just a little interest.. I've been thinking if I should buy a camera or not since summer.. So really I didn't want to spend a lot of money. Ill look into stretching the budget though.. I also need to buy parts to build a new computer so the camera does make an impact on how much I will be spending

Just post the pic you had on fb for everyone to see uno

IMO it's very worthwhile to get the d90 in your case for that reason alone

found the pix

these are all new.. he literally only took them out of the packaging and put them back in lol.
theres more than just this tho..
anyways i used a d90 today.. it was pretty impressive..
but really, i kinda want to spend around 300-400 at first..
considering d5000 now but you guys are probably going to still side with the d90 eh?
d90's avg $600 while i can pic up a d5000 for $400 lolol

i guess the d90 will be better in the long run tho.

you're not going to be able to use any of those lenses with a D5000. I would recommend a D90 if you can afford it. I love my D200 due to the high build quality, dedicated buttons, etc, but yeah it's getting old. If you're a noob, then you should know that the D200 doesn't have any auto modes like the D90/D5000.

I'm in Hawaii now and I decided to go light and took my old D40x. I really regret it now because I missed those dedicated buttons for ISO, WB, the focus points, AF motor and the nice solid feeling. I'd probably never get another D40/D5000/D3100 size camera ever again.

Nothing wrong with manual focus if you don't mind that split second manual focusing. I'd say a D5000 is a good start if you don't wanna spend a lot.

I would recommend the D90 over the D5000. You'll appreciate autofocus (especially since you're just beginning to use a DSLR) with those lenses and the better viewfinder and LCD in the D90, at the very least. A $200-300 difference isn't that much once you start playing around

I have never owned one personally. My GF has one, her dad has one, danizer has one, and my yearbook class back in high school had numerous D90's. All have their unreliable moments. Nothing serious that would need to be sent back to nikon but still annoying. I never said I owned any. That said I think it is a capable camera and in 737's situation it fits his budget/needs. I just want him to be aware of these little glitches, I don't think it is just my luck, sorry if you couldn't understand my post and any confusion you had over me "going through" 6 D90's
