You like point and shoot style? NEX. You want more manual control? D3100.

If you have any interest in upgrading your photography in the future, probably better w/ the SLR.

honestly between the two I'd take the NEX, the D3100 doesn't feel that great albeit still easier to control manually than the NEX. But as a DSLR the 3100 feels relatively toyish. You do lose out on a lot of AF lens selection with the NEX though, so you might be best off with a used Nikon or Canon DSLR for around $500

The ELPH 100 HS is a really great point and shoot. Picture quality is nice for a point and shoot in that range. Also one of the only ones that do 1080p HD video.

Ive finally decided to go for an entry level DSLR, coming from a point and shoot.

How is the Canon Rebel T3?

D3100 and others are a bit more pricey but is it worth it?

I'm tempted to get the ELPH 100 HS as a small camera to bring around. It's going on sale for $199 (memory card, waterproof case included). But the ELPH 310 hs is being released soon and has 8x zoom...granted my main camera is a sx20is with 20x zoom, so maybe I don't need all that zoom for my second camera...

get a used t2i ! a t2i is literally the same camera as the t3i but without the flip screen.

I don't know much about cameras, but I started looking yesterday. What's the diff between a t2i and a t3?

Looking for something I can learn to shoot with, has HD capabilities for videos, and when I lean a bit down the road, has that affect that the object is nice and crisp, while the background is blurry.

T2i is the better camera when it comes to specs. I also wanted the T3 but decided that because it was a beginner camera, that i would want a new camera after a while.

With the T2i i can play with it and keep it for couple years down the road.

I was also gonna get the T3, the current day equivalent of the XSi.

But then i decided not to :fullofwin:

should just get one with a sensor similar to a t2i/7d/60d/t3i, new or used. they all use a similar if not same sensor.

if i were to buy into a system right at this moment, i'd get a d7000

Yeah, the D7000 is probably the best APS-C DSLR on the market right now, but not for long, if the Sony A77 is as good as it is in real life as it is on paper.

$990? wow, paid that for my 995 11 years ago, and yours is probably 3x-4x the camera.

I was at futureshop, and the salesgirl (I never listen to women) told me to get the t3i over t2i. I read that the only difference is a flip screen and a flash? Otherwise they are the same camera? Is that true?

Also, how are nikons compared to the t2i? What would be the nikon equivalent?

I'd love some advice, I'm going crazy doing research, and I don't understand all the terms lol.

As I posted above, I just picked one up last weekend sales at both futureshop and visions were trying to get me to pay that extra 150 for the T3i. Visions went as far as telling me that there were no more T2i left in stock LOL when unsaid I'm going to futureshop they magically got 2 more in stock

But yea I did lots of research too and I think it would be the D90 for competitor

T3i is no better than the T2i, just a year newer and an additional flip screen.

In the market for a d90 soon, as it will be my first camera.
Anybody have any problems with it? Or any tips on using the camera?

Actually, I found the digital zoom when shooting video to be an awesome feature when shooting wildlife with the T3i, and the flip-out screen is more useful than it seems. The hinge is a major weak point though, as with any camera with a flip-out screen.

The D90 is getting a little long in the tooth...I'd get the D7000 instead, as it is much better in terms of image & video quality.

Fair enough, haha i dont really use video that much so i could live without the digital zoom. The T2i fits my needs and price better.
