basically looking at cameras about $300 or less, with a decent lens that can capture nice pictures.

$300 or less... camera by itself, you can get a canon sd200 or a520 (which has more manual features but no lithium battery with it)

Which compact camera should I get?

Eversince I bought my digital rebel, I've noticed I've been taking a lot less photos. It's such a big camera I can't bring it everywhere so I was thinking of getting something small. Not planning to take professional photos with this camera; just everyday photos.

I was considering the Canon S550 and overall it's a good camera, but there's the Fujifilm FX10 which has very little noise! I don't know which one to get. The S550 has more function, is smaller and looks nicer but the FX10 point & shoot has way less noise.

S550
7MP
• More functions, manual controls, etc
• Noise like any other compact camera
• Small, metal body & looks really nice
• Uses SD cards which I have a ton of
$600

FX10
• 6MP
• Very basic point & shoot
• Very little noise. It's like a Canon 350D; ISO 1600 is similar to ISO 400 on other cameras.
• Bigger, not as compact and looks cheap.
• Uses XD cards which adds another $100
$470 (or $350 CDN from the states)

EDIT: I forgot to add this camera:
Fuji FinePix 9.0MP Digital Camera (E900)
• 9MP
• manual controls, etc
• Little noise, ISO 800 is similiar to ISO 400
• Biggest of the 3, I still have to have a look at it to see how big it is
• Uses XD cards which adds another $100
$600

why do you need such a high mp for everyday snapshots? personally i'd go with either the canon S80 or the Fuji F10 if you need that much resolution. otherwise why not look at the canon sd300? it can be had for 380ish right now, and im sure it will get cheaper for december.

I like high resolution because I can crop the photos and zoom in on my computer to see the details (of landscapes). I also print out my favourite photos on 8x10 to put in my album.

I saw the SD300, but I already hae a SD200 and it doesn't seem like a good upgrade. SD200 is a good camera but it's always being used by someone else in my family.

All of the amazing photographers on Revscene have inspired me to get back into shooting photos as a hobby.

So I'm looking to pick up a Digital SLR when I'm back in Vancouver in a couple of weeks, are there any suggestions for something to start off with, that isn't too expensive?

I was looking at the Nikon D50 and the Canon Rebel XT SLR.

You can probably find a decently priced Digital Rebel, Rebel XT or 10D nowadays. Canon gear is the most common in north america, so there's never a shortage of used lenses for sale (always good news!). Some say Nikon's are more erganomic, but I never found my old Digital Rebel to be a pain.

Buy a used camera, there's lots for sale and you save a huge amount.

Thanks for the advice, I might end up going this route now.

Is there anything in specific I have to worry about?

Does the number of shots taken matter that much?

Woo!

Been playing around with my Canon IXUS 750 (SD550) I got from HK and this thing rocks. The pictures are much more crisp compared to my old Canon S110. 7mp > *

Thoughts? Olympus E300

Hey All,

Im new to the world of photography and just love it. I'm considering getting a Olympus E300.

Seems like a pretty good deal in the $1000 range with 2 lenses already included in the box.

From what I been looking in the world of Digital SLR the price is pretty competitive. DPreviews gave this camera a good rating as well.

What do you guys think about it? Any features not available in this camera that Canons have? Anything else I should consider in the $1000 range?

I appreciate any response.

Thank you
-Ramon

I would get a Canon or a Nikon before an Olympus. Though it's a good brand, canon and nikon gear is MUCH more common in the used market, as well as new. For $1000 bucks (or therabouts) you could pick up a canon or nikon, or get a used one and possibly some lenses too.

evolt is cool cuz of their ultrasonic dust remover
but like ppl said, fourthirds lens system isnt that popular so its hard to find lenses

but it has small buffer and images arent as nice as other dslrs

but good value overall

not a fan of the look tho imo, it looks more like a wannabe

consider getting the sigma sd10 with 2 lenses for 1200cdn
or a nikon d50 kit for 950

I'm just trying to stay away from $1000+ cameras that are just body for that price.

How about this Pentax? Lower resolutions but seems like a good deal.

Thanks for all your opinion guys.

Are you looking for something with or without warranty? You can pick up a nice used camera like I did anywhere from $600 and up. I got a 6.3MP Canon 300D and I love it. It's perfect for me. It has the features I need for a beginner. And since I already had a 35mm Canon SLR both of the lenses work with the digital one. It's a bonus!

Like people said tho, you'd probably be better of going with Canon or Nikon. It's kind of like debating if you should get a fully loaded Cavalier or a basic Civic - both same price (more less) but which one will be better in the long run? (no offence to Cavalier drivers :P )

Good luck with your decision!

SD10 gets my vote.. absolutely stunning colors and details. i would've got it if it was this cheap back then.. and also, after a minor modding, the SD10 mount can use all canon lens fully functional, that's a plus too.

for pentax cameras, i can't recommend it unless you already have some pentax lens, the AF is pretty slow and the jpg-out-of-camera is nasty..
