A bit torn on pulling the trigger on a new NEX-5N for the GF, I'm wondering, are there any other small cameras I should be looking at?
She's borrowed/used my camera lots of times, loves its ability to take nice photos but hates the bulk (t2i w/ grip and sigma 18-50mm f/2.8). I want something that will last her for a long time, is small and somewhat easy to use, and takes really nice photos. This is why I'm leaning towards the NEX-5N but can anyone else suggest anything else? I looked at the Nikon N1 @ black's but it felt very cheap and flimsy (although the frame is apparently all metal as well?). Help anyone? Should I go ahead and get the NEX-5N?
Lenses are $$$$ because all the nice ones are Zeiss branded but the only extra lens I'm going to pick up that I think she'll need is 16mm prime, and that's only ~$160-$200. Any other small/powerful cameras that pack more features? I know the t3i has tons of built in editing functions but its just too big

Have you considered the GF-3?
Personally, I like the exterior design of the GF-2 more than the GF-3, but
the later and newer one packs more features. Or if your budget allows...the GX-1 |

don't bother with nikon N1/J1, at that price range, you might as well get a low-mid dslr or mirror less aps-c.
n1/j1 sensor is smaller than 4/3s, limited lenses unless you get an adapter. You're better off buying Sony and looking for cheapo Minolta lenses or 4/3s and adapt other lenses.

Nex 5N has the biggest sensor since it's an APS-C. Meaning it has the least higher ISO noise of all the mirrorless ones.

So i'm looking to getting a t2i as my first DSLR, right now fs will give me back 50 bucks if i bring in my busted camera too. Canon EOS Rebel T2i 18.0MP DSLR Camera - Body Only : Body Only - Future Shop
so then the body would only be 580.00 (plus tax).
1. Would it be better to find used lens (since people seem to buy/sell lenses all the time) or just pay 20 bucks more for the 18-55 ( http://www.futureshop.ca/en-CA/produ...e0a4f99d3een02)
2. Is an extended warranty worth it? or stick with canon's OEM one?

pay $20 more for now and save up for better lens later, you will not have the patience to wait for a good priced used lens that you want lol
you do not need extended warranty, some credit cards have additional warranties anyway

I'd say spend the $20 and get the lens, especially if you don't already have any lenses. It'll give you something to use and to practice on for now and figure out if photography is your thing. Once you get better and learn more, you'll be able to sell the lens and buy a new one. (people on CL seem to be asking for about $100 - if you can get $75 for it, you're still $55 ahead)
Warranty is personal preference. I usually don't buy it but other do (and have the guts to take "full advantage" of it) so in those cases, it could be worth the money.

So I went to the store and just couldn't buy the NEX-5N when the D5100 was only $30 more ... looks like I've added a nikon to the family .. so much for getting a compact camera
on another note, nikon shutter sound is where have you been all my life, make my t2i sound so cheap

The nex-5N was $700 @ FS, found the D5100 for $730, asked if I could price match w/ broadway camera who are doing $679.99 + 16gig memory card. Apparently no one was there to approve my request (no manager photo manager apparently) so I'm holding off to get a callback. If no callback I'm going to broadway camera for $679 including a memory card
Only reason I love FS is I can browse around for an hour or two and touch all their cameras and no one asks me anything

i bought the T3i with 18-55mm kit for $650+ tax at visions.
What I did was price match at visions electronics with the FS trade in camera program. Also got the canon bag + extra battery for $75 extra.
Didnt feel like giving FS my camera so I thought I'd give Visions a try. Worked out well I thought

If anyone is interested, there's 2 more used 5d Mk II's up for grabs at Photo Expert. You also get a three month store warranty, not bad for $1450 (plus tax).

| Photography, Digital Camera, Lens Price Comparisons for Canada - photoprice.ca is still your best bet for Canadian prices.
Check out the big 3 in the states (B&H, Amazon, Adorama)- when you go to checkout, you will see the prices including brokerage fees and taxes, so you'll know exactly how much you'll be paying to get it shipped to your door. If you have time, get it shipped to PR. There's the off chance you won't get taxed when you declare it and you can save a bundle.
Buying Canon in the states is fine, because Canon Canada will warranty US cameras. Just don't get the Grey Market ones from Adorama.

If you get a chance, google for the exact passage in NAFTA. I have it lying around somewhere in my room (can't find it atm) and bring it if I'm picking up a lens across the border. Luckily (I guess), I've never had a dispute.

t2i/t3i are relatively the same, but one thing I do suggest is get a fast lens for video because it makes it much easier to shoot video. I'm not a big fan of taking videos on my t2i though, i find it a bit cumbersome and a bit of a pain to manually focus as I go. Also the built in mic picks up every single little movement you make, so maybe get a Zoom H1 for cheap off amazon and use it as a external mic, and sync up when you're editing
t1i is definitely a no go for video as it doesn't offer the same quality and FPS as the t2i/t3i.
Also, memory express price matches almost everyone and their price is almost always cheapest. Broadway camera usually has pretty competitive prices though (however Mem Express usually beats/meets them)

You shouldn't have to pay duty on a lens though, but crossing the border with a used lens could still incur HST.
And NAFTA has nothing to do with the lens if it was not made in NA. Most lenses (to my knowledge) are made in Japan.
