As someone who was in your position, get a lightly used 60D or a moderately used D7000. With the Rebel bodies, you'll be frustrated with the lack of dedicated manual controls and small size in general.

With both, pick up a 50mm f1.8 and shoot your heart out before getting a nicer lens. You'll learn lots with the 50.

Beginner in Photography - Advice/Recommendation Pls

Hi Everyone,

I need some advice. I have always used P&S cameras however I would like to begin using a DSLR. I have never used one before but would like to begin doing some more hobby based photography. How is the Canon 2ti? I can pick it up brand new for about $390 plus tax? Any recommendations if that is a good DSLR for my needs (Beginner) and at that price point. Thanks

Guys, I am thinking of moving from my Canon 7D setup to the new NEX-6 or NEX-7. I am able to get either one on a good discount through work - any thoughts on comparing either camera?

I like to shoot sports occasionally, so I am thinking about the hybrid phase detection on the NEX-6, but the NEX-7 has a better control setup and possibly better IQ. The new lens that comes with the NEX-6 does make it nice and compact, however, and is probably better image quality than the 18-55 kit lens that comes with the NEX-7.

Would you guys get a D600 if you were looking at getting a full frame camera? I'm using a D7000 right now and want to get a full frame one.

I'm kind of thinking about the D800 but I'm not sure if I need the 36MP.

^ Honestly if i was you 2 id just get a second hand Canon 5dmark2. The D600 or D800 are too expensive and the D700 is way too dated. Especially since it does not have video. The 5dmark2 is so damn cheap now a days im so fucking tempted to move on from my D7000 too but then i think about.. I dont really need it

Picked up a D600 today. Couldn't justify spending the extra 1000 for the D800 or having to part with all my lenses.

I'm really liking it a lot. Having a full frame camera is definitely a step up from the D7000. I've been busy this weekend so I haven't really been shooting with it a lot.

I like the quality of the video as well. It's a lot nicer than the D7000's video imo.

The NEX-6 is a great camera with the new hybrid phase / contrast focus. Keep in mind that the NEX-5R also has the same sensor and focus technology as the NEX-6. The sensor is a proven APS-C sensor so there isn't much to talk about. When compare to the NEX-7, the NEX-6 performs better in high ISO but the NEX-7 captures more details with its 24MP sensor.

Also keep in mind that the NEX-6 has the standard hot shoe while the NEX-7 doesn't. However, the NEX-6 lacks audio jack if you are into shooting videos. Can't go wrong with either.

Fujifilm X-E1 produces sharp images and performs really good in high ISO situation. You can get adapter for it and put Leica lens on it and it would still perform wonderfully. The down side I can think of about the X-E1 is the EVF and the AF. The EVF lags a bit and the AF tends to hunt a bit. The camera is great for taking still photos but not so much for video. If price isn't a problem it's a great camera.

For the weekend shooter guys who who went from aps-c to full frame, was the jump worth it? I currently shoot with a D90 with a set of crop lenses (Sigma 17-50, Tokina 11-16, 35mm and 50mm primes). Been thinking about upgrading to a D7000 ($800 at BC Camera) for better AF and video, but should I take this opportunity to jump to a D600?

I haven't shot with a crop sensor camera for close to 4 years.....I can never go back. The D7000 is a great camera, but the D600 currently has the best IQ (in terms of dynamic range) of any current Nikon body if the files are processed properly.

I'm looking to upgrade from my d40x and think the D90 is the best fit for me since I'm looking for the following:
AF motor in the body (I have a few AF prime lenses that I like)
Video would be nice (not a dealbreaker)
Bigger viewfinder
Faster continuous shooting (kitesurfing sequences, things happen fast!)
Less noise @ high ISO
Bigger viewfinder

Looking to stay $500 or less (not a hardcore photog, and mostly use it camping & on the beach, so it has a higher likelihood of being damaged or stolen) that being said, D90 is probably the best route to go no?
Does $400 sound about right for a D90 body with ~10k shutter actuations (assuming all is good)?
And ~$200 reasonable to ask for a D40X with ~20k?

Hey guys, looking for a beginners camera for myself, I am pretty good with technology and I learn quickly. At first it was between the NEX 5R or the Nikon D3200 for me, but a friend said that the d5200 is comming out soon and will a lot better than the d3200.

What do you guys recommend?

It says right on the lens if it's Image Stabilized (IS). But pretty much guaranteed to be.

Nope. Ended up getting the D80 with a standard 18-55mm for $250.

I don't know shit about DSLRs, but I just know that I needed an upgrade for shooting photos.

OM-D for lens selection, IBIS, and weather seal. NEX-6 for larger sensor. I think tracking AF is poor on both tho.

I own an OMD and recently took it on a trip. the weather sealed kit lens w/ macro is uber convenient, and I'm surprised at how well the files processed. One thing to note is that there are no lens profiles for most m4/3 combinations as CA/distortion is already corrected, but the correction is very conservative. I run them in DxO then LR.

i'm sure u know how much those $$ primes cost right? luckily olympus made a great 45, 60, and 75, as well as the panny/leica 25, which are more affordable and all AF.

some further opinions: Mirrorless recommendations - Beyond.ca - Car Forums
