oh dude I swear to god i thought i saw you. There was a little asian dude 2 tables up taking pics of their food. lol

I got the regular vanilla pho. It's cambodian run from what I can tell but the pho is actually really really good, I dont mind the price.

Expresso 05-31-2011 04:05 PM

Does anyone else sub the vermicelli for regular pho noodles in Bun Bo Hue?

I usually ask for this because I like the texture of the pho noodles more. Is this sacrilege? lol

Alphamale 05-31-2011 04:32 PM

Substitution happens all the time. Just depends on preferences.

Drow 05-31-2011 06:09 PM

i substitute. really depends on my mood. i find the reg. noodles for bun bo hue is harder to eat lol

MajinHurricane:
The Mi Quang noodles from vietnam, you're going to have to get a relative to send it to you through the mail! yea you can't find it here I don't think. I personally think regular rice noodles is better for Mi Quang.

HachiSix, alphamale, Drow:
I find that it's most Chinese people who change to rice noodles for bun bo hue. Must be a chinese thing! It's like how every chinese person needs the beansprouts cooked and noodles not spicy.
Most if not all vietnamese restaurants serve bun bo hue with the giant vermicelli noodles. My restaurant serves it in the medium sized noodles while the small sized noodles are what you find in salad rolls or grill meat dishes w/ vermicelli. It tastes a lot better with the medium sized noodles than the giant noodles, I don't know why restaurants always serve the giant ones.

Jayboogz:
Bun Bo Tai is just my restaurant's special. No one else makes it but it's the same soup. The only difference is we don't put in the grey sauce that is basic in bun bo hue. Instead of beef flank/well done beef, we use sliced rare beef you find in pho but we marinade it in Lemon grass sauce. People who love bun bo hue in general gotta try it.

I got Mi Quang and Mi Cao Lau, very impressed.
The Mi Cao Lau was awesome. Loved the garlic sauce on top, love the thinly sliced pork. I'm coming back for sure.

Some questions about the stuff in the Rau Thom.
I think there was romaine lettuce, thai basil and mint in there, but there were 2 herbs I couldn't identify.
The first one was a smooth leaf, smooth edges, slender and comes to a point. It was peppery in taste and was actually a little spicy.
The second one was small, it looked similar to the mint leaves, but with a smoother surface, but pointier edges.
Would be awesome if you could fill me in on what those were.

I love it when you can see the owners just chill out and sit down for a meal. The older guy was fiddling with the batteries of some remote controls, and the lady had on an apron. Somehow, seeing this always gives me a little more confidence in the honesty and authenticity of a place.

Cheers and Best of luck!

Gosh I only know the veggie names in vietnamese. I'll pay closer attention to the names of the veggies when my dad goes buys it. see if its labeled on the packages.
And my dad was fixing the controller for the ceiling fans cause they weren't working.
My whole family works there lol even my girlfriend (wife).

Haha nice, definitely tastes a lot different than every other bun bo hue soup you've tried at every other restaurant right?? I think bun bo hue at every restaurant tastes exactly the same. Or rather some restaurants just use Pho soup and put some different flavor in it.

rageguy 06-05-2011 06:12 PM

Nice can't wait to check out Hoi An Cafe soon. It's too bad the restaurant closes at 7pm on most days!
