| YSR Round Two
As some of you remember, I had a killer little YSR 50 up until just over a year ago.
The bike was purchased in near-mint condition, ran great, and was a blast to bomb around on.
Then some crack addicted filth-jockeys stole it and summarily trashed it. The kind folks at VicPD found it, and I rebuilt the motor, repainted the bodywork, and took care of a few other minor issues.
I then sold it to some knucklehead in Langford who blew the engine, and then 'stored' the bike in his back garden.
The bike then got into the hands of a guy in town, who was in the process of putting it back together. Unfortunately, some douche nozzle backed into it while it was parked at Town & Country Mall, writing it off for a second time.
I purchased the bike back recently, and found it in considerably worse shape than it was when I last saw it. All the bodywork is hosed, there is considerable surface rust, the suspension is pooched and the electrical system seems to need attention. Though having torn it apart once before, I don't think it will be too hard to put it back together this time around. Having gone at it for a few hours tonight, I think I'll be going a little more in depth in the build. All the way down to the frame this time I think. The nice thing is the engine seems pretty strong since it was rebuilt last year, and hasn't had too many kms put on it.

If you are going to strip it down that far, why not get the frame powdercoated? No more surface rust.

Yes, but less durable. Your bike though... you do what you want!
Glad to see its back in the hands of a good owner.

if your gonna paint it at home use POR-15 first, probably one of the toughest primers out there. We did a BJ-40 frame and you couldn't mark it with a sledge hammer!
As an aside: YSRs are awesome. I'm hoping to have my sweet 80s 2-stroke yammie streetbike rideable again this summer.

It's coming together finally. I dropped the head and bore off at the machine shop to be de-rusted. New swingarm is painted and installed. Tank and seat are almost finished. I'm not going to get the frame done this season. Wedding plans are eating up too much time, and I'm just too impatient and want to ride it soon. I'll probably have time to paint the wheels soon though.

Yeah, essentially the same colours. I wanted to do something more creative with it, but with all the other stuff on the go these days, I just don't have the time for the finicky stuff. I'm happy to ride it even if it is a bit rusty.
I assembled and installed the motor this evening, and I hope to flash it up tomorrow afternoon sometime. It'll be ridden sans bodywork for a while, as the stock stuff is trashed, and I can't afford the kit that I want for it right now. I'll tear it down again in the fall and do it up right.

Can you rip up the highway on this thing? Just curious what that funky little machine will do wide open. Must be a blast to ride. Good luck.

It'll do about 105km/h at full song, but I don't think I'd want to do that for too long. It'll cruise at 80 in 5th happily all day long.
It seems to fall into a grey area regarding highway use. It's classed as a 'limited sped vehicle' the same as most scooters. Yet the signs I see on the highway say that vehicles incapable of doing at least 60km/h are prohibited. Either way, I wouldn't want to be too close to any big rigs sailing by on that thing.

Better late than never, I got the thing going again. It pretty much sat since last spring due to my wedding and house renos and other lame excuses I usually come up with whenever I do anything. I wasn't happy with how it ran last time around, so I tore it apart again. New top end, gaskets etc., rebuilt the carb, and got it going strong tonight. Just needs two more flashers, and a working horn before I can have it inspected. I may actually get the damn thing on the road.
-- If anyone has any 6V turn signals or a 6v horn kicking around, I'll happily grab them from you --
I found some half decent bodywork for it too, so I should have it looking decent again.

They ride about the same really. Obviously a little twitchy being on tiny wheels and with such a short wheel base, but the principles of countersteering and how you corner etc., are the same.

If you can get some turn signal housings that would work for you, I could easily put together a 6V LED to stuff inside...
