This is true, although I admit I do have quite a bit of fun trolling at times.

Victoria is a heck of a venue. The Milleniums are pretty decent boats; I'd be happy if they used these instead of Gems on the mainland. The festival is well-run and it seemed to be livelier than Alcan, but maybe that had to do with the small space. If it wasn't so darn expensive to get there (BC Ferries), I think more teams from the mainland would attend.

It's always nice to come home with a gold medal, even if you run the risk of looking like a douche by wearing it on the ferry ride home. :)

RAYClovis 08-17-2009 11:19 AM

Congratulation on your 4th overall. :) Yeah, the Navy got edged out of their Victoria gold medal last year by Without Warning, so it's no surprise they're pretty determined this year. I wonder if they'll show up at Kelowna? Magnums would love nothing more than a rerace of last year's Kelowna final between RGL and Navy. :D

No way you'd look like a douche for wearing your hard earned medals man! People who judge you for wearing it are either envious or sore losers. With that said though, its definitely better when its the bunch of you wearing it versus just by yourself...Strength in numbers lol

I'm glad you were in our boat Jacob, good experiences for all.
Dont be shy and say hi next time you see us.
Dont be shy and hold back a little next time your team races with us. :D
Come join us next year if you crave more competition, you'll have a seat on the boat.

When I went from my first team (so-so Rec team no longer in existence) to FODB (also no longer in existence.....), they all understood that I was moving on for the bigger challenge and more experience. However when I went from FODB to FCRCC that same season, there were a handful of people that didn't want me to leave.

The people who are your friends will encourage you to paddle for the team that pushes you/that you enjoy paddling with the most. They may not want to lose your strength & speed, but they also realize that clinging on to you for the team is a waste of skill on your part.

When Magnum was still mostly a rec team and we decided to go comp, where was only a handful of us that stayed with that decision for the next year. We had to recruit a good amount of new paddlers and likewise for this year's stepping it up. In fact, I'd say that a little more than half of Magnum this year are people who we've had to recruit. So yes, if RGL want to step it up, you'll have to expect to recruit people who're also willing to step up, but it's very possible with dedication and enthusiasm. Obviously, if way less than half of a boat want to step up, it'd be less of a hassle to look for another team. It doesn't hurt to discuss it with your team, especially now that it's near the end of the season.

Hey Alex, were you ever a part of Synergy? Just curious cause I vaguely remember you with synergy.. or maybe it's because you went out with Melody (my old teammate's sister :D)

But yeah, i'm part of the handful of magnum paddlers that joined this year. My team from last year folded, and I was also looking forward to a more competitive team. I like your decision to stay with RGL for a few years. A lot of us here strive for high-end competition and striving to be the best we can possibly be... but it was nice paddling with Rice Rockets for the years that I did. We really bonded well as a team, and those were some extremely fun years I had with them that I wouldn't take back... Many of them will be my friends for life. And likewise, a lot of the team decided not to do db this year, and some joined various teams, but when I was out there with Magnum at Alcan for example, I felt a tremendous amount of support from my old coaches, managers, teammates, etc. So just for the friendship aspect, I commend your decision to stay with RGL for a while.. and it also gives you time to grow mentally and physically for DB.

We are not doing it as a team for sure.
I believe abt 5-6 of us are doing it with other teams like Synergy and DH Beat.
Myself and 1/2 other guys will be paddling for How Wet Can You Get for fun since the Beat is full.

Just the 10 men boat races? lol..FYI, all 10 men boats races are actually women's race...but since most teams have only 8 women, they are allowing 2 men on the boat, but minimum 8 females. :p
