I hope they do this by the end of the year since that is when my contract with rogers ends and I will have some super duper bargaining power.

Now... if you can get the new HDTV set top boxes swapped in because of "technical difficulties" on the old RCA boxes, and somehow get the "right" rep to process your upgrade request, you COULD have it up and running pretty much within 2 weeks.

again, GSM "support" might make it before the end of the year, but a network-wide standard switch is impossible, at least not this year...
and looks like Engadget picked up on this story too.... hehe http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2008/0...lte-engineers/
I have a feeling that this will be a Telus/Bell joint venture and who knows, by 2010 maybe EVERY single carreir in Canada will be 4G GSM (LTE).
The Future IS friendly... and can't come soon enough lol

| telus going GSM?
I read something on this today. apparently they are getting pushed really hard both locally and foreign to swap to GSM before 2010. so all the foreigners can use their GSM phones here. and they wanted to start in a couple months.
anyone seen anything on this? I'm about to buy 20 new phones for work on telus. I don't want to have to buy 20 more phones 2 months from now to replace them with GSM ones.

does that mean that every tower would be converted? and that telus CDMA would be gone?. and I'd have the same BC wide coverage but with a GSM phone?.
or would they be totally changing coverage mpas? like removing all the remote towers and just concentrating GSM in the main cities?

Like I said, it's only a rumour at this moment. But there is evidence that Telus is attempting to move to GSM, whether that would be an entire rollout or a hybrid of GSM and CDMA, it remains to be seen.
Last month, Telus posted a job ad in search of a Senior Network Engineer that is experienced in "LTE and UMTS", now these are 2 technologies that is used in GSM, why would Telus need someone specialized in this area? Only Telus would know.

seems like the next couple months might be messy for phone use. I'm still on telus analog. the sound quality and rural range beats digital hands down. but it's gone in BC in a few months. and seemed to have droped in the states as of last week. at least in the Seattle area.
so I'm forced by telus to buy a bunch of phones in the next couple months to swap to digital. yet their digital is up in the air....

They won't suddenly shut down their digital service, much like how they are only shutting down analog now. Probably a good idea to move to digital now, and that new Koodo brand of theirs might be a good deal too if it has access to Telus' full coverage area.

It took about 5 years to get rid of anolog. So I would not worry, CDMA will be around longer than that.
Though Telus want to get the GSM (Asian) roaming for the 2010, they do not want to give up the CDMA roaming from Americans coming up here.

Update! Telus soft-launching its HSPA network in September, full roll-out in October (selected markets): Quote:
We’ve spoken to a few more people who have been able to confirm to us that TELUS is indeed going to be flipping the switch on parts of its HSPA network on September 2nd — though at this point in time we’ve been unable to get confirmation as to which markets this will occur in. All we know for now is that Vancouver will be one of the lucky markets and, if all goes to plan, the majority of the country will be able to bask in the glory of the new network by the end of October.

How do you know Globalive > all? Do you have some kind of insider information (i.e. you work for Globalive) or is this just pure speculation based on hype created by a carrier that hasn't even started yet?
Oh, and FYI, Telus' UMTS network is up and running. I've seen their Node B's. They're made by Weiwa Telecom (China) their entire UTRAN is ready for deployment albeit network regression testing. Core network is still supported on the Nortel platform.

Globalive, Shaw, and 1 more if I remember correctly. Not sure if all of them will be in Vancouver though. Globalive should be online before the Olympics, and the other 2 should be up by 2012 at the latest. And yeah, rumour has it Globalive will specifically target unhappy Rogers customers.
Every carrier in the country is trying to lock in their customers before they jump ship. Look at Rogers. They KNOW they're gonna lose a ton of customers (ie people who hate Rogers but use them because there's no GSM alternative). There are also many who hate Telus and Bell and will jump ship in a second.
If any of you were smart, you would NOT renew your contract and see what's out there (just wait a few months) before locking down for another 2-3 years! There are quite a few articles on this online, and my friend (manager at Bell store) confirmed the rumours. Yes, Bell and Telus will have GSM up and running to cash in on 2010 roaming. I don't know whether it will be 3G or 3.5G though, maybe an insider can help here.
The other pisser about contracts is how they can just change things on you. Incoming texts anyone?

No, Shaw will not enter the wireless business as their business strategy will be focused elsewhere with the little spectrum they own.
3G/3.5G is data specific. 3.5G consists of HSUPA and HSDPA so whatever your Node Bs have been unlocked to be capable of for data transmission rates. The speech portion is not applicable. Quote:

It is likely Telus will eventually decommission their CDMA network over a long period of time, say, 5 years. Convert their customers over to UMTS, come to terms with Nortel and tear apart their equipment. But this is speculative as their CDMA and analog user base is strong and why give up markets that make you money?

^Lol, sorry duke, but I am basing my opinion solely on the leaked info on the phones + prices etc etc.... it seems like people are hyping. But I don't think anyone knows about globaLive yet :S It seems kind of... in the shadows right now and only known by cellular enthusiasts like us...But despite that... it looks good no? What's your opinion? I know that people on Telus CAN'T wait for Telus to switch to GSM... But I also know that people hate Telus's customer service (Me)....so.....does... Koodo go GSM too? XD |

Everything about globalLive is speculation at the moment. What I posted is still unconfirmed yet, and could well be a fake. Take it with a grain of salt or two.
Telus is big enough that this will pay off for them. We'll see how things go.
