Enjoyed the beginning with the family, as well as the beautiful imagery throughout, but it felt like the movie could've been so much better. Some cringeworthy dialogue, and I just can't stand Hathaway as an actress.
the most sad ass attempt of a remake of one of the best gangster movies ever made, it's like for once America's trying to copy something Chinese guys made and it's a fucking joke, who knew a movie with Leo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Mark Wahlberg, and Jack Nicholson could be such a piece of shit
- plot is all over the place, they tried to put 3 movies into one and it didn't work at all
- as a result the characters lacked depth
- as a result there was no emotional attachment to any of them
- scenes were just copy and pasted from the original
for those not in the know, watch Infernal Affairs II (one of my favourite movies of all time, and the movie on which it is based) and you'll know what I mean
ughh, I have to watch something else now to get that pathetic movie out of my head

The Martian: 8/10
Exactly what I expected: Clever new setting and out of the box ideas but in a package we've all seen before. Predictable yet you still wanna watch. I'd say this is the "Armageddon" of this decade. All star cast with some quirky jokes, but still pretty safe and PG for the whole family. Worth seeing on a big screen.
Side note, Mackenzie Davis, the cute blonde girl in the control room is a local actress. I took some classes with her years ago. Still just as beautiful and crazy talented back then, glad she's doing well now.

Different strokes for different folks, never watched the Chinese original so for me it was an something fresh even though I knew it was a remake. I enjoyed it, I would go so far to say as it's one of my top 10 favorite gangster movies. I didn't find it broken up and was easy to follow but I could imagine if I seen the original I might have a different opinion.

Anyone who thinks Infernal Affairs was better than The Departed is just clouded and confused by nostalgia and probably swayed by bias of some sort.
Infernal Affairs contains a good movie and a cool premise, but has the typical modern (at the time) HK movie crap to sort through.

Sure did. They'll never make a movie as on-the-nose all-American as Armegeddon again, but this was essentially the same thing, except even tamer because everyone lives.
I mean this comparison in an endearing way; I loved Armageddon, as cheesy as it was, I accept it for what it is, and it was awesome. And don't get me wrong, The Martian is a much better film, but it serves the same purpose in the world of cinema. A big, flashy, "epic", outer-space, unite-the-world rescue story with an all-star cast. Same witty banter, same shots of people tensely looking up at a screen, and saying goodbye to their families, culminating to a one-in-a-million rescue plan that's totally unbelievable but awesome to watch.
I'm sure there are more similarities if I paid closer attention.
I didn't expect to be rocked to the core by this film; it was exactly what I expected and thus was satisfying.

Quality notwithstanding (Armageddon was trash), I don't think they're remotely similar movies, other than being about space... The genres aren't even similar, one being a realistic sci-fi, the other being a "rag-tag group of misfits" disaster flick.
Armageddon has more in common with movies like Twister, Independence Day, Perfect Storm, Pearl Harbor, etc than it does with The Martian.

i guess it just depends on which one u watched first... one big gripe I had about it was it was the same plot, but Infernal Affairs was a trilogy whereas they made The Departed into one movie, but if you followed it fine then I guess its just me

totally swayed by nostalgia and bias, which is why i'm not the one handing out Oscars, just my own personal opinion on the movies
actually thought Infernal Affairs didn't have any of the typical HK movie crap though, one of the few HK made movies that don't, which is partly why I enjoyed it so much
Terminator Genisys 8/10 rated based on Terminator series... I may like this more than T2... if you like Terminator or just Action movies in general, you should really enjoy this
My favourite being Salvation...

T2 is great and all but id say its as good/bad as genisys, the only reason i think people may hold T2 on a pedestal is because of nostalgia (and for the time it was a technical feat)
anyway it all depends on my mood, the series is like musical chairs with me, sometimes i'll love one and dislike another but then on another date that'll switch
limited release horror/comedy movie. Extremely well done and very enjoyable
I wish this was a wider release, one of the better movies I have seen in a while.
