After years and years of putting it off, I finally watched this to see if it was worth it. I'd say it was.

For starters, the production quality is pretty damn impressive for 1946. As for its social connotations, while I understand where the NAACP was coming from in criticizing this movie at its release time, I have to say that watching it decades later transported me back to that time. I guess black people in 1946 didn't want to be reminded of slavery but in 2016, we have no idea what it was like so the visual representation in the movie helped in that regard.

Was it worth it for Disney to lock the movie away for decades? Hell no. This is still a movie that kids would love. Since kids aren't born racist, this movie in its setting wouldn't affect them.

I also learned about the word 'Tar Baby' and how it's not even racist, etymologically. It was made that way via soap bar and the word 'Tar Baby' actually stems from African folklore.

Seriously, reading up on the history of this film, the author of Uncle Remus' stories and libtard media losing factual ground over it was very interesting. I grew up always thinking this film was just a cartoon with racist propaganda buried underneath (like many WW2 cartoons) but it's not. These are stories told by slaves and transcribed for everyone else to see.

However that said, the story was pretty basic and the character developments were pretty flat. Nothing special. There was heart but it was underdeveloped.

I give it a 7.5 / 10

EDIT: The real tragedy is actually the short lives of the two main actors, particularly the little boy...

I didn't know this cartoon existed up until your post. I think the earliest Walt Disney movie I remember is Fantasia on VHS. I'm dating myself now. There is this exact Brer Rabbit ride in Disney Land Tokyo that I was so confused about. I had thought it was a fake Disney product. I thought it was some kind of Roger Rabbit knock off.

Agree, its all old material from the 80's/90's which was executed way better in the past.

Purposely put this one off but watched it two nights ago.

This movie looked beautiful, no doubt. The lighting, the rigging, the colours made this film a spectacle. There were also a couple of funny scenes.

However...

This movie was very disappointing. The amount of hype it generated (beyond the *gag* furries) made me believe I was going to watch something memorable and everlasting. You know, a Disney film you can instantly file away in the 'Classics' section.

Not for this film. For me, the A & B storylines were both so trite, I could taste the plastic. This plotline has been written so many times throughout movie history. I was successfully able to guess 80% of the A story plot correctly before the plot even unfolded.

As for the B story plot, all I can say is 'try again'. Bunch of social commentaries that, again, been talked about in many prior movies but with far better execution. This movie offered nothing new or fresh. It's a fucking cartoon, be imaginative in how you tie the fantasy world with our real world. It almost feels like it was partially written by interns at Buzzfeed.

I am salty because I had high hopes for this. Haven't seen a good animated feature in a long time and with the hype and positive reviews around Zootopia, I thought I'd finally be able to watch something fresh.

This film instead became an over produced fable. I was hoping for more.

3.5/10

^ really? I didn't think it was THAT bad. yes the Sloth bit was overly shown on youtube but all in all I didn't think it was 3.5.

For a family film, even kids can understand as well as being adult friendly (attention span wise). Comparing it to Chipmunks, Smurf, Peanuts and other junk, I thought it was legit.

Have you watched Inside Out?

I'm guessing you don't have kids?

Nowadays, animations with storylines and content that are fully geared towards children are pretty tough to find. Studios (especially Dreamworks) try too hard to produce something that appeases audiences of every category. In the end, you end up with a bunch of awkward moments where all the adults are laughing at inside jokes that none of the kids get. It's terrible.

No, but I need to so I can absolve myself from Zootopia. I'm hesitant to watch The Good Dinosaur as well.

No kids, though I could have watched it with 5 very young relatives and still would walked away with the same review.

It is what it is. A film that gravitated on a wavelength that I could not feel.

GS8, if Zootopia was 3.5/10 what would you rate Cars? (IMO Cars was TERRIBLE)

i did not know what zootopia was, but the kids saw the poster and wanted to watch it, i was like uggghhhh....ok.... turns out i actually quite enjoyed it.

finding dory however, i mentally checked out after 15 min or so.

i think in both cases it was a matter of expectations, 1 low 1 high, and the outcome was reversed.
