800 is the movie, premiered in china July. blah blah blah, best movie, so emotional, so much pride... ALL BS publicity stunts.
Japanese vs china war historical war film, (built a real scene of 68 buildings; using ~31 football fields; sadly, nowadays, no one could tell if it was Universal studio movie set of CGI). They put in a lot of detail in the nicer settings decor as well as camera movement. No substance is just no substance; similar to someone wearing prada without any class, one look and meh.
Why this movie didn't work... Unlike saving private ryan, there was a leader, which gave tension and bond between the group of soliders, giving audience a sense of care and emotional ride.
When you don't do that, all you got is a good set, spread out of actors with minimal background strings. You get: oh he's a cadets, a translators, a veteran solider, student etc but you barely care about resulting just "oh, it's japs against the chinese". Feel bad for the actors who put so much work yet not able to translate or showcase it.
They already made their money back maybe cause people are dying to watch movies but it's not the best. OH, movie is not in mandarin but in shanghaiese.
6.5/10

Easy 4/10 and that's generous. | Day and night difference compare to the first one.
it is just not worth the time to watch.

Theatre was dead; there was 7 people inside and in total, there were only 20 + seats.
For those who loves to jump around theaters and see free movies (my dad is guilty of this)... those days are over, due to they count # of people inside the theatre and if social distancing is in place.
Back to the movie.
We all know Nolan loves playing with time. Momento, Interstellar, Inception, and now Tenet. It's a 10 yr in the making script; protagonist is played by John David Washington (Yes, you guessed it, Danzel's Washington's son), with the help of Robert Pattinson (He was ok.. wasn't as stuck up as I remembered him from Twilight).
What was visually 'different' is also the part which became super confusing for the audience. (During Inception, the protection team would chase after Leo, where entire world doesn't know or care who you are; it was still exciting with the tension of him him being chased). In Tenet, it became such a huge distraction because things were moving backwards and forwards. A bit distorted, complex, and not so visually appealing. It's not a porno movie; I'm trying to watch the main character do stuff, not be distracted by a gangbang.
I keep comparing to his previous movies because he uses now the SAME formula (in music) to create suspense, climax and ways to an end. You know where the twist will be, what's going to happen and why things happen they way they are.
Still complex, just not OMGWTF did I just see anymore.
Most likely I'm not going to watch this one again, based on 2 things a) no major lead being cast so not so much star power and b) wasn't visually appealing to me (inception & interstellar kept on bending streets and ceilings)
Al in all, John W really reminds me of his dad, has his walk & talks of his dad Denzel movements, he wasn't that good.... Story, screenplay, score.. well done. just not 9/10 worthy like his previous movies.
7/10

Host 10/10
A movie that's only 57 minutes and it's freaking epic. Do NOT watch any previews.
Story: 5 chicks were bored as F during covid, and decided to do a zoom meeting. They invite a medium guru and try to talk/ invite a spirit to chat... over ZOOM... ( 問米 / 牒仙 over zoom.)
WTFFF right...??? How the fuck does this play out ??? 10/10 on Rotten tomato... are these paid reviews?
Was I wrong... Thinking it would be just 1 or 2 stupid moments with retarded effects ... Such a good ride. Loop holes... meh.. it's a horror / thriller... what do you expect, but I didn't even have time to process cause it's packed into a 57 min film (VERY glad it wasn't a standard 1.5 hr movie cause it would have dragged on for too long.)
Movie was filmed separately thru zoom/laptop by the actresses and they did their own cameras, lighting, and stunts. Because it was all done on zoom / camera, you FEEL you are part of a zoom meeting.
SUPER low budget film, now I can't go to sleep.. FALK. 10/10

Russia film = all subtitles. Decent setup around with time frame in 1983. I can't say it is a horror; more space mission landing back to earth with unexpected astronaut landing back.
Did appreciate it was 1983 theme cause if it was 2020, a few of the loop holes wouldn't have worked, but all in all an easy watch.
Part of me wanted it to be Hollywood go ape shit crazy monster, obviously those story lines are done to death.
Nothing too worthy, decent build and wrapping of a story.

mulan live action.
i'm actually surprised i watched this since i never cared to watch the live action of "Lion king".
4/10.
Scene effects were amazing, story was very meh,Action was kinda meh...Disney being disney expect sword fights but no blood,Also they went with "crouching tiger hidden dragon" style action....so you're gonna see dudes run up walls.
one of the most terrible scenes is when you see mulan magically get behind behind enemy lines after a whole wall of them were in front of them attacking...you'll be confused as hell how that happened the cut was so bad.

Never seen the cartoon before and also have saw a fair share of Chinese war / imperial movies so I'm jaded for sure on standards.
Biggest budget ever to be directed by a female at 200 million, with back drops in China + New Zealand, I thought they did ok with the scenery.
What was good: backdrop were legit, esp the snow cap mountains, composition of angles, color, and filling background were superb. Real? Nope. Who cares. You think India is colorful like Slumdog Millionaire by Danny Boyle or people actually speak fluent english... meh. Running up imperial palace stairs to inside the Majersty's hub with sparkling clean floors and lamps... Lovely picture.
Casting of asians., just wow. Tzi Ma + Jason Scott Lee + Donnie Yen + Jet Li (what a waste)+ Gong Li (aged well being 54 with the smokey eyes). I was super blown away with the match maker.. for those who watch Stephen chow movie.
What didn't work. We are so used to watching these imperial movies, a lot of things doesn't make sense.
a) No guards in the palace with the king? wtf
b) How does Mulan get to be on a horse during battle.. she's too low of a rank.
c) How dare you not BOW DOWN when you go in to see the King or look at his eye while talking to him....
d) Army scenes were decent from Western's eyes. Surely Jet-Li + Donnie were shaking their heads saying "I wouldn't do this", but F this, I'm getting paid.
e) Army scenes ain't glamorous ... Even Western war movies have thousands of people and rolling hills of army so I felt it was a bit weak sauce to have only Donnie Yen's army.
These are just years of TVB + china drama making it impossible not to see past.
All in all, I had no expectations, didn't have too many boring past thru scenes. $30 dollars seemed steep .... then I thought about a family for 4 sitting at home with friends... easily would have been $100 at silvercity.
8/10 fun for all movie.. if you want to compare to cartoon.. it won't work. If you compare Lion King to this, it won't work. Compare to TVB / China war movies.. this will fail... I had a good time esp. during lack of COVID films.
PS Happy they didn't cast Mushu as China market really didn't like it and wouldn't have worked in this movie.

Tenet 8/10
Not Christopher Nolan's best. It feels like the movie was supposed to be longer, because a lot of exposition was missing from the beginning of the movie.
The concept of time travel was fairly clear, but the connections between the character was extremely convoluted. I also don't understand why Nolan thought it made sense to have major character interactions and dialog while behind gas masks. There were literal points in the movie where I had no idea WTF the character were saying to one another under the muffled masks.
I love a confusing movie, but this one was just too much, halfway through I somewhat gave up on understanding all the plot holes, knowing I was going to have to read the plot further thereafter. Cinematic wise the movie was fantastic, as all Nolan films are, but I feel like the movie could've spent more time in the beginning to expand on the characters and their relationships with one another.
I doubt I'll watch it again, but I'll definitely be watching some Youtube breakdowns on the movie for further understanding here.

The Rental - 8.5/10
Dave Franco directorial debut, also screenwriter. Solid movie, well shot and directed. Character development was weak but an above average movie during the pandemic.

never even heard of this movie till you said something...7/10.
nothing cheesy done about it,felt polished to me,loved the area 51 in Russia vibes...not much security for something so top secret though,a gate, some soldiers..done..
kind of reminded me the "Alien" series when Ripley had an alien spawn from her and was running all around the space ship..

But paying for a movie behind a paid service was an idea I couldn't support, so I streamed it for free elsewhere and will rewatch it in December when it comes to Disney+ anyways.
Overall, the movie was quite mediocre. The script was so light it left me wanting. I could barely recall any memorable dialogue between the characters. The backdrops were great, but every scene was followed by 5 words from each character and then it was on to the next scene. I did enjoy some of the changes to the story though in particular the role played by Gong Li. But so many of the supporting characters seemed unnecessary since they played such a non-significant role. They were just there because of the animation.
IMO, this movie could've been so much better if it wasn't done by Disney. Their need for mass appeal made the movie confusing at times. If the movie was for an Asian audience, a lot of noticeable things did not line up. If the movie was for a western audience, the concept of "chi" shouldn't have been included. I also felt the concept of "devotion to one's family" was better explained in the cartoon than the movie version, but that's just me. |

Love Guaranteed on Netflix 5/10
Brainless romcom, nothing offensive about it. Most enjoyable things were that it was good to see Rachel Leigh Cook again (had the biggest crush on her when I was in high school), and since it was shot in Vancouver, fun to try to identify the shooting locations.
Also I am a fan of Damon Wayan's Jr.

Just one more thing on Mulan (I hope you guys didn't pay for it, it sounds like a trash movie anyway which isn't that surprising)
So they've basically boycotted the movie themselves: |

Why the hate.
Watch it before you judge and I actually don't really give the fuck the director's actor's opinion / political stance.
Any opinion will bound to upset some form of minority.
Remember Danny Boyle Slumdog Millionaire, people were complain how you can make millions and leave the 2 kids still living in poverty... or Titanic... all the garbage left after the set was taken apart.. blah blah blah...
Ain't going to boycott shit....just go and enjoy a movie

Ted Lasso. It's a new show on Apple that was much better than expected. Starring Jason Sudeikis.
Lighthearted comedy, entertaining storyline and likeable characters.
Season 1 was an 8.3/10 for me.

Alive.
2020 koraen film... HOLY F..
1000 times better than the busan 2.
Just shows you how a decent script + good vision by director + decent editing makes it for a movie. Everything else is already 80% done for success.
Kid is a stay at home gamer with close to little to zero sympathy from me... in fact, I would LOL if he just died... Movie didn't go too too much over board, some loop holes on how sometimes zombies are not parallel in reaction time. Sometimes they attack like crazy and smart, other times.. they are dumb and slow as F....
Cast only had 6 people....
Other than that... decent flow with a medicore ending, but just so happy cause it's 10X better than Busan 2 (to me it felt like tokyo drift zombie with shit graphics).

VANCOUVER Taiwanese film festival is underway; free streamling.
Move is called: Forever Love.
2hr Love story made it a bit too long, last 1/4 was ok. Their emotional jerks /pulls reminds me of bollywood films that drags on forever. Credits scenes showcase some 40-50s taiwan classics which they re-create in movie.
Taiwan had 100+ movies a yr back in their glory days and its what the story begins. Good premise, cutting it down to 1.5 hrs would have been great. The recreated scenes based on the live footages made it resonate a bit more.
You can stream online now. 7/10

Another documentary from 2019; Syrian film about a female doctor dealing with life during the war.
-filmed during the Syrian Civil War.
-cave cause the hospitals are not all underground
-movie focuses on specifically her Emergency Room, Operation Room, hospital life.
Puts you in your place when you compare to Vancouver. How we take life / home / heat / food for granted in 1st world countries.
Doesn't really tug on your personal emotoins too too much. I was blown away with the playground portion when damn... that's what a kid playground is like.
Wish they could put a bit more on where they lived, what family do they hang out with, how do they deal with day to day BEYOND work locations...
decent watch as I was bored of movies for a while. 7.5/10
