I would imagine the stage effects and visuals would be better with the Harry Potter showing. Joseph and the Technicolour Dream Coast is mostly song and dance and very few visual effects (if any) but they make good use of all their stage props. I recommend seeing it if you get a chance to see it given that you are in Toronto.

Here's the thing with Avatar... The first movie was basically the Pocahontas story, but in space. Mining for the mineral unobtainium? How original...

What was mind-blowing, was the world that James Cameron created. Normally I find the 3D effects very gimmicky (and they give me a headache) so I never opt for those showings, but the 3D in Avatar was amazing and I really felt immersed in Pandora.

I plan to watch Avatar 2 in IMAX 3D soon, so I'm looking forward to the amazing visuals again, but not expecting much in terms of story.

mikemhg 12-28-2022 11:18 AM

^You can tell James Cameron is doing these Avatar films more for the spectacle, to advance film technology, it's a theme park ride experience. Story and or logic within the story is definitely backseated.

No spoiling at all but Avatar 2 is pretty much a copy/paste of the first story into the second but with water.

If you're going to see this film see it in 3D in Imax if you can, this is the only way to consume this film, watching at home would be completely pointless.

One thing that I'm really sick of though -- can these big Hollywood blockbuster action films put an end to the long drawn out third act with the never-ending boss fight? It's an annoying way to pad out the film time.

Like fuck that formula has been done so many times, we all know what the outcome is going to be, it's boring. This film had an hour long endgame scene, I kept looking at my phone to check the time hoping it would finally end :lol

One film that subverted that this year was The Northman. The end fight was a short few minutes and it was excellent.

did not expect it to be a good movie; the first Knives Out was interesting.. a great mystery and this one did not disappoint...

acting was a bit weird, i don't know why Daniel C had to play it with the accent but overall not bad.

a lot of character developemnt and then bam, flash backs and a different way to tell a story.

Give it a shot as it's the holidays and a good film is rare to find.

8/10

F--king 20/10 Classic

Top notch performance by Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes, and Ben Kingsley
specially Ben Kingsley.

Confess, Fletch 7.5/10

Funny lighthearted whodunnit mystery with Jon Hamm based loosely on the Chevy Chase character Fletch. Enjoyable watch.

Emily the Criminal 7/10

94% on rotten tomatoes, on Netflix. Decent quick movie, good thriller. The main character played by Aubrey Plaza is a bit frustrating with all the dumb decisions she makes, but she makes up for it by wearing thin tight tops and no bra almost half the movie.

Ahh Aubrey Plaza such an odd creature. Sometimes I think she's super unattractive and sometimes she's kinda hot lol. The movie though totally agree, quick decent flick.

The Menu 8.5/10

Fun thriller, especially if you're into or aware of the "foodie" or fine dining scene.

RRR 9/10

Fantastic turn off your brain action movie. 3 hours does not feel like it.

winson604 01-16-2023 08:23 AM

Not a movie but The Last of Us just aired last night. My favorite video game franchise in the past 10 years and man the 1st episode they nailed it. Super excited for the rest to come.

finally watched it without any warning. Yes 100% had to switch the mind off.

So stupid no how it won the best music soundtrack or something. Total BS but its also cause of EDI + lack of films during covid.

typical bollywoodmovie, some scenes were hilarious, not all were stupid, maybe only 80% stupid, some 20% were still legit.

winson604 01-16-2023 01:01 PM

Woops just realized this should have been on the other thread about netflix and streaming, oh wells FailFish

Watched avatar re-released errr.. avatar 2..

Was pretty good! Entertaining. Honestly I couldn’t care less about the colonization shit I’m not looking to discuss that, acknowledge etc. this is still a turn your brain off and enjoy the visuals movie as far as I’m concerned.

I mentioned to people we were with, imagine showing someone from the 80’s/90’s this movie. Honestly it felt partially just like a tech demo but imo it’s really not THAT far ahead od the game, at least to the ignorant movie goer in me. Is a movie like top gun etc. that much different than avatar in terms of visual effects and CGI etc. ? I guess but it doesn’t really feel that way.

One thing I’ll say is there is not a chance in hell I’m ever going to a movie thay doesn’t have full blown heated recliners like park Royal lol.. fuck that noise. Even the VIP theatres I went to in Coquitlam were trash compared to these.. although I can’t remember if I was in the dbox in Coquitlam..

Anyways, 7/10 probably the best movie of the last 6-7 I’ve watched

Didn’t feel like 3.5 hours or whatever it is when you’re laying in the recliner lol

68style 01-17-2023 08:55 AM

How do you not fall asleep watching a 3.5 hr movie in a heated recliner?

ilovebacon 01-17-2023 09:00 AM

This is a great series if anyone likes action military genre

I had anticipated falling asleep as I usually do for any movie but avatar somehow held my attention lol

Gumby 01-17-2023 10:38 AM

Did you watch Avatar 2 in 3D?

Everybody says it felt like a tech demo, which I agree with, but after watching some behind the scene videos on Youtube, it gave me a greater appreciation on what the cast and crew were able to accomplish.

For starters, filming performance capture underwater has never been done before.

Compare the underwater scenes in Avatar 2 (actors/crew filmed underwater with no scuba tanks) to those in Aquaman (filmed on land, water effects added digitally).

mikemhg 01-17-2023 11:40 AM

Yup we watched it in IMAX 3D.

Amazing tech, beautiful CGI, it's weird though I'm not sure if it's our perceptions or what, but we were less impressed with Avatar 2 as opposed to the 1st.

I'm thinking it's because CGI has gotten so good nowadays the parity isn't there any longer.

I akin the the 2nd movie to a gorgeous, but dumb IG model. Outside is gorgeous, but nothing going on in the head.

A beautiful and boring creature.

If you like the genre you should check out Strike Back if you haven't already. It sort of rebooted twice but all the seasons are really good.

I've been meaning to check it out for years. Cinemax had so amazing shows (Banshee and Warrior) just to name a couple but heard amazing things about Strike Back as well. Its time I think.

underscore 01-17-2023 03:43 PM

It's a great show, I picked it up knowing basically nothing about it after seeing a couple ads for one of the seasons and really enjoyed it. I've mentioned it to a few friends but it doesn't seem to be very well known which is a shame.

Season 1 is based on the book by the same name, the 6 episodes play out sort of like 3 parts of a book and the story is really interesting. Things changed a bit for seasons 2-5, it's less serious but still good plots and more action. Then another change for seasons 6-8, less serious still but it's written that way so it works. Lots of action, and some episodes that are pretty heavy.

roastpuff 01-17-2023 03:47 PM

People who watched Avatar - did you do HFR or not?

SkinnyPupp 01-17-2023 04:04 PM

Thing about HFR Avatar is that many scenes are still in normal frame rate. That must be like when you're playing a game and the cut scenes are in 30 fps and look choppy compared to the rest of the game LUL

Hondaracer 01-17-2023 04:40 PM

Hmm not sure if we did HFR but we did do 3D, it looks like there is both HFR and non HFR 3D at park Royal

One thing I’ll say about this avatar 3D was that it was completely immersive. Some of the previous 3D movies I watched it almost looks like like there is an overlay to produce the 3D effects (I gusss this is a thing though as Apperently some 3D movies are not filmed with “3D cameras”?)

But avatar while there were only a couple times it felt like it had real depth, the glasses did not take away from the movie at all
