DIDI, (in mandarin is little brother).
So so aweseome... it was totally exactly what I went thru in life in the 90s but this was based in 2008
Asian boy living in america is like, from dating, girls, bro, trying to be cool, finding identity, dealing with asian parents, weed...
EVERYTHING that i went thru is exactly what I went thru.
Casting was spot on, acting.. superb, story line.. really good... I did want the ending to be a bit better or so called happy hollywood feeling to make this a happy go lucky... Still good to say the least, if the movie could be a tad faster in pacing, it would have been perfect.
So many jokes that I could relate with....would have made... from pranking your sister, awkward boners, drugs, having non Asian friends, trying to rebel and yelling at your mom.. I resonated a lot with it. Good job mr director, producer as well as writer. *CLAP CLAP CLAP.
wife and i enjoyed it esp we were both asians... she didn't get the struggles as a asian kid....
The Substance - 8.5/10 - We really enjoyed this film, really well directed. It's body horror, some scenes might make you flinch, but it's fantastic stuff. Excellent message as well, and very easy to understand the varying metaphors the director is trying to relate in the film to body dysmorphia, aging, and cultural expectations of a woman's appearance.
What a refreshing example after that wet fart of a film Megalopolis.
Watched this documentary tonight, it was easy to watch for the most part, a bit hard and extremely uncomfortable on the Texas portion, some genuinely funny moments punctuated by a fun song at the end.
I walked away learning something about what a trans person goes through both privately and publicly and… in some strange way I forgot I was even watching something about a trans person’s journey and just found myself wishing I had a buddy I was that close to that I could take an adventure like this with regardless of a life changing decision being made.
I only knocked a few points off here and there because it did drag a couple of times (no pun intended) and some scenes felt a bit stilted. I don’t know how much they actually scratched beyond the surface of the issues at hand.
Monkey Man (film)
Directed, screenplay, Story, Produced by Dev Patel - dude who played slumdog millionaire.
It wasn't really that good of a movie - I think it had potential but it was too much into action. Raising from the ranks part was great... a bit of love interest.. decent but when the dude became john wick was when it took a turn. Again... emphasis on the circle of life movie ending was not to be missed and how it try to come with a decent ending; I just couldn't shake the John Wick ass kicking out of my head.
Boston Strangler - produced by Ridley Scott & since I'm a sucker for Keira Knightley, it was a decent watch.
It kept the mystery portion well and since it was based on a true story, i liked it. As for Carrie Alexandra Coon (not that famous, she was in 2 ghostbusters which were meh); whoever casted her was on POINT! Ending pic of real character & Carrie was identical LOL.
I thought this DVD type movie was legit; acting was shit to say the least - the husband role was crap, Keira smoking, playing a reporter hard ass just didn't jive too well. The character building was a bit too fast - come on, this was a lady who first reported on lady magazine and now she's a news reporter. All in all, I took it with a grain of salt, learned a lot about Boston Globe newspaper back then.
Decent watch, just don't expect its Oppenheimer.
Civil War
Kirsten Dunst playing a stuck up, zero emotional reporter was perfect. Man she ageddddd. 1) movie starts RIGHT into civil war era, no BS, no need to explain back story.. Who freaking cares.. I'm the director... F u on hollywood storyline. Props to him.
2) Then they casted Cailee Spaeny - new face (aliens), which was a good surprise. I didn't think it was possible for a journalist during civil war to be developing own film but hey.. I rolled with it and it was pretty cool.
3) The other supporting cast was good, nothing worthy of an oscar but just added to the story.
4) If you expect guns, rape, fire, drugs... you won't fine it, so dont' expect it's action thriller.
5) I did love how they did snapshots of shots.. and it was superb. Thought it was a nice touch. Great way to enhance the movie.
6) The ending part of the movie was sweet and bitter at the same time - won't give away any spoilers - i had a great time seeing it play out and knowing how the movie was going to end, it was still legit.
For once the script was solid and Kirsten Dunst, played the role well.. it was only the end where Kirsten did a pivot (due to the script and not her acting), weakened the movie a bit for me...
High Forces - ok, fine, how many asian movie do you see with Andy Lau... (he tried to push out 5 movies before his concert tour). I'm glad I watched this.
Fast paced, great story line, few plot holes, few weak story emotional tugs but it was very well knit together for the first 90% of the movie.
Reminded me of the movie in the 90s with Kurt Russel - Executive Decision.
Thank goodness this was a china based movie, no need for stupid chinese cameo to pay for HK movie with zero love interest etc. (HK movies are all like that).
The last 20 minutes was pure JUNK and totally unbelievable.... however, given how tight the movie was going, i let it slide. The Antagonist did a solid job and it worked well.
All Shall Be Well (Chinese: 從今以後)
It's a great movie, but tough love movie.
Female 60+ yr old lesbo movie; tough family dealing with a lost and working out property, money and relationships.
I just want to punch the wall when you are dealing with shit family dynamics. I never ever want to deal with family blood. Money, housing, personal stress, 'i gotta look out for my family so F you all'.
Not everyone can appreciate these small productions; i enjoyed it.
It's very rare to see same sex kissing on large screen esp in HK so it was a bold movie for someone in their 60s.
this was a movie I was waiting for.
Yes it's all filmed within ONE set, within 1 location, it's always the living room scene.
Great concept and there were a few places I was proud of hte director - intertwining multi generational story lines.
-The last min of the camera angel was nicely done (you'll see what I mean)
-tom hanks and Robin Wright was cute, was there a lot of chemisty, not relaly nor was there enough time.
-great use of CGI for some aging / back to youth tech
-the director tried to pull on the tear strings but heck.. didnt work that well due to scritping
-director a) he directered back to the future, forrest gump, wrote back to the future, Cast away, polar express, what lies beneath, contact (jodi foster), flight (denzel), etc...
-the use of different screens and rectangle focus were great... (you'll see it)
Great successful director and writer.
Where this movie failed was punchining in way way way too much. why did you need dinosaurcs, why do you need the natives, why do you need the black family; i felt he was trying to be Ethic, Diversity and inclusion.
You need to brace yourself with all the freaking time line swapping and jumping. It's mixes up so much which it became too mnuch. The story doesn't ocme alive until 10 mins in so that was a pain.
You were in a mood for movies with hugging posters today
Didn't even come to mind.
Let's see if I can keep this theme up.
Speak No Evil (2024 film)
Amazing to cast James McAvoy (xmen, split, wanted); he does hold the movie up well. A few times he was a bit over, but hey.. better than under acting. Then we got Mackenzie Davis who I had no idea where I saw her then it hit me; she was the lead in Terminator: Dark Fate.
Going in, I didn't see no trailer so it was delight watchign the movie; it could've been shorten to just 90mins but Noooo, the had to lengthen it to 110mins making it middle a tad too long.
Ending was decent, played out well, just wished(this is a remake) was shorter.
It's a psychological horror thriller film; some lose ends were weird but again, we are dealing with different type of audience.
Oh, why am I telling you this; the original remake is very different. Won't spoil it for anyone, just keep in mind the dutch film in 2022 is not typical.
^ American Symphony, I heard was good doc/movie. About Jon Bastiste and partner. It's real life drama, just from trailer, it's far better than any acting BS.
What's with these crappy movies? What a crappy work event which we had to pay for. (it was joker 2, then got postponed to Flight Risk, then got pushed to this).
Man, the opening had great premise. Know where it was going with it, a bit too serious at times, heck, I'll over look it. Who's the audience? Kids or adults dumb enough to watch this.... It just went downhill when it became action / CGI movie...
I did enjoy what it was trying to do. It's really a kid / happy / jolly movie, just lost direction each time The Rock was on the scene. They really didnt' need to make it so freaking serious.
1) Didn't need to have any sort of swearing. That's how it can be a classic (if it ever becomes one; look at Home Alone etc).
2) M.O.R.A (Mythological Oversight and Restoration Authority) - why is this so complex.. it's Xmas; dumb it down for the kids...
3) What is the rock doing? Why is Lucky Liu sounding like a dude. I did think Chris played the Tony Starck type character. he did play the lazy / dad / bad ass / theif / character well, given he was also captain america for so many years trying to break away from the role (Knives Out was decent).
PS: Filming ran into issues with Johnson, who was an average of seven to eight hours late to film his scenes and missed several days of shooting. These delays reportedly increased the budget by $50 million to a total of $250 million, which Garcia disputed. Johnson later admitted to frequent tardiness as well as urinating in bottles on set, but Evans and Kasdan defended him..... ???what????
Wife and I were on edge of our seat. NO doubt moments, no time to think, just sit tight.
No wonder this was epic, it was directed by Jaume Collet-Serra!!! Bravo. (He did Non - stop, unknown - liam neeson, but thne failed at Black Adam w/ the Rock)
I didn't like Taron Egerton (Kingsman and also Tetris; which was awesome by the way), but man he did a good job just doing his job. Young kid doing his job as TSA at an airport.
Sometimes you just run with a script; no need to setup when, where, why, just let the audience figure it out. $47 million budget, hope they made lots of money.
Won't ruin the movie for anyone, cast was legit despite everyone was a no body. When you have a decent script, nothing else matters. NO time to think, you chat about why. No fillers at all, just processing all that you need.
One simple car scene was filmed all within the vehicle, 1 camera rotation... great directing.
No CGI, no stupid crashes, fires, or building falling down...simple good videography.
^Is this that one with Jason Bateman in it? I mean he's not exactly a no name hahaha but the title isn't listed but I thought I remembered seeing this photo with Jason Bateman attached. Carry-On right?
No no no the movie is called Official Teaser, about a TSA agent fed up with his job until he discovers an unclaimed luggage full of sex toys which gives him the idea to start a business as an independent Male Dominatrix.
I saw a trailer for that and it looked better than I would've expected but with movies based on real things I always worry that they're gonna do something weird and not at all realistic because the plot needs it and the writers are too lazy to do it properly.

So sorry. .yeah. it's Carry on.
I didn't want to ruin it with J Bateman but yeah it was him. I saw the trailer and had zero expectations and man it was decent. Thank goodness they didn't ruin the entire film in a trailer....
Ventured into british action thriller, and it didn't disappoint. Don't want to ruin the show but a) i was sooo shocked Ben Whishaw was in it. WHo??? Well, took me 30 mins into an episode to find out he played a part in a huge movie.... He was in James Bond as Q (guy who invents / gives all these gadgets to Bond).
Anyhoo, very rounded script, each episode were done with a good purpose, not too much filler yet with a british dark side to things.
You know it's very British when it says Happy Christmas instead of Merry Xmas.
Music was great and just the filming + lighting + angles were good. Doesn't try to do John Wick action genre; doesn't lay out the story lines in normal american drama but mostly discover as you roll along.
A few bit of flash backs and a huge sense of friendship code, promise and spying involved.
Definitely worth a watch.
*got renewed for season 2. Super excited. Kiera K says she was ove with action films and watnted to focus on words; and this series totally did not disappoint. TOns of ways to act with sharp dialogue, emotions and lies. Spy thriller at its best!
No rating cause I turned it off after 5 minutes. The costuming and effects were terrible and it felt like it was gonna be some terrible US propoganda piece so I bailed.
Enemy At The Gates [2001] - 7/10
Solid war movie, very well made, though a bit odd when all the Soviets have posh British accents lol. Worth a watch if our advancing age made you interested in WWII, especially since it's about Germany vs USSR which I don't think is depicted as often as the other fronts.

1 family is a doctor, the other family is a lawyer, both are brothers. Surprisingly, their kid who knows each other does something wrong.
That's the whole story line and the ONLY story line. it was featured at TIFF which I didn't get tickets so I'm glad i got around watching.
Acting was strong, intense, family, brotherhood, motherly love all generations and esp. how kids are seeing / reacting when they are in trouble. Now, despite all that, the linear script made it very uninteresting.
It had its moments of in depth thinking which I appreciate - giving me thoughts on how I woudl treat my kid if they do such thing, how if the lie, how society etc.
It does pull on many string (some stronger than other). Watch it for the family dynamic, don't watch it to be super moved by anything.

Enemy at the Gates is one of my favorite war movies of all time and I usually re watch it every couple years and it's still just as solid as I remembered it to be. Also it's one of the better sniper movies usually they aren't that great imo and Ed Harris is always dope to watch.

I find a lot of them tend to be a bit over the top so the action, plot, and characters being more realistic was refreshing.
