Oscars love giving best actress awards to women who play hookers.

I'm serious, look it up, over a dozen Oscars were awarded to women playing roles as prostitutes. It's pretty fascinating.

I personally thought The Substance was a better film and better acted by Demi Moore, but meh, Oscars always get a hardon for a particular movie and throw the awards at it.

I have to agree, I almost always don't think the winner of the best movie can possibly be the best movie but hey ...

2024 Anora
2023 Oppenheimmner
2022 Everything Everywhere All at Once
2021 CODA
2020 Nomadland
2019 Parasite
2018 Green Book
2017 Shape of Water ... WTF?

You get the idea ...

12 Monkeys [1995] - ??/10

I don't even know how to rate this. It was odd, and nothing amazing but not terrible at the same time. It's just a bit of a wonky sci-fi movie.

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy [2011] - 9/10

I don't think I even fully got it, since I'm not good with names and there were a lot of people involved, but this is an amazing Cold War spy film with a lot of stars in the cast. It's slower paced but by no means is it dull.

12 monkeys was really weird and that was before I had internet to try to decipher back then.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy - had a really solid cast. I remember it was a really good spy vs spy vs spy which i had to watch the preview to jog my memory.

DID NOT like 2024 Anora
This was pretty decent 2023 Oppenheimmner
This I did NOT like 2022 Everything Everywhere All at Once
I actually didn't think CODA was that bad. 2021 CODA
Frances McDormand did a solid job on this.2020 Nomadland
This was epic.. so many deep layers for a good movie 2019 Parasite
I remember it was a good movie I think I thought Bohemian Rhapsody and A Star Is Born were much better choice 2018 Green Book
It was actually a solid movie..2017 Shape of Water

Sneakers [1992] - 4/10

It's sort of a heist film but not a very good one. It had a few good elements but overall the premise and plot were pretty weak. Maybe they worked better back in 92 when the tech was still newer.

Predator [1987] - 9/10

Somehow I'd never actually watched it before. The way the Predator is revealed must've been amazing back in the day when it was all new. Even seeing it now the slow reveal was fantastic. The human laugh at the end was super weird and felt out of place but the rest of the movie was great.

Predator is probably one of my first movie memories (lol asian parents totally cool with showing young kids violent movies, but super conservative for nudity and sex haha) and continues to be a favorite.

So many good one-liners.

Considering there isn't even much in the way of spoken lines it really has a lot of classic quotes. I didn't realize they were all from the one film.

Predator 2 is next on my list. Then probably the Aliens movies. I've seen AvP a bunch of times, AvPR was terrible and Predators was pretty meh.

I remember loving 12 Monkeys when I saw it... I remember renting the DVD from Blockbuster or Rogers lol... but I cant for the life of me remember what exactly it was. Have to rewatch sometime.

I think a TV show of the same name came out after the fact?

Yeah apparently there was a TV show that came out around 2014 and ran for 4 seasons.

Paddington in Peru
Ain't that bad. We watched all 2 previous movies until we watched this one. FYI, Emily Mortimer took over Sally Hawkins cause (mom's role) cause she said she was done with the movie / character.

Same type of story line; death stare, sandwich in hat, family spirit tying things together. Like before, the script was done nicely, PG13, and just family film for all ages. Bit of onion cutting at the end; maybe it was my wife's hormones, truly a happy go lucky movie. Nothing too crazy, shocking at all.

Antonio Banderas joint the case which was similar to Jungle Cruise type character which was also meh.

You will notice first bit of the way there is a pic of Paddington the bear with Queen Elizabeth pic (Ma’amalade sandwich skit with QE II Jubliee skit on youtube)

Kraven
#1 there are no post credits; err was it cause they knew the movie sucked that they didn't even do one?

So so sad that 110 M with only 60M at box office. Guess the director's big break was being director and writer for Margin Calls and triple frontier. This one sadly was just crap.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson was the lead and I gotta say, no chemistry (thank GOD there wasn't any romance story line) and no charisma in the movie. The script was ok to be honest, it's like figuring out how spider man got their powers but sadly, they explained 15 mins in and then tried to revisit it exactly an hour later.

Action was meh, story was really NOT good, the family dynamic was decent to say the least (Russell Crowe plays the dad). To give it a good spin, the part that was GOOD, was at the last 5 minutes. JUST when they tried to wrap things up, it was pulling on solid story line mystery strings; but you know it's the end esp when it's 2 hrs in.

Long movie at 127 mins.

Would skip this one... too bad.

The Modelizer
If this movie wasn't based in HK, i woudl not have watched it. I ultimately stayed awake for the streets of HK. Byron Mann is the HK CBC actor and honestly, because he was in a few HK movies, I watched it for that too. Did not know he's 57 dang.
Rayssa Bratillieri was the female lead and she plays a true Brazilian model falling for a playboy.

Reason why this movie was made; well cauaes Byron wrote the story himself. See this as B line Crazy Rich Asians with little nudity, tons of models trying to piece a love story together. To give it a break, the love story between all were actually decent. Nothing cheesy and all fell into place. The easter egg credit scene was really not needed as who wants to see an old woman.

All in all, cheezy HK love story hollywood romance story which i watched it purly for the HK scenry.

When I think of Byron Mann my first memory will always be that 17 year old kid watching the Corruptors in the theatre with the boys seeing him as part of the The Fukienese Dragons lol. Ahh good memories and who can forget Uncle Benny!

Sept 5
SUCH a intense, jam packed film. Really nicely done. Super small production with not so famous cast - Peter Sarsgaard (i've loved him in An Education, but I don't remember much of him); everyone else was really a no body.
Just so you know, it's based on a true story, 1972, 1st time live Olympics with an attack in Germany. I don't want to spoil to movie despite it's a real story.

Ending is intense roller coaster with an abrupt cliff dropping stop; definitely a tough way to close. I'm still dealing with it.

If you get a chance to watch this, this is what a good script looks like esp when this movie was based in 1972.

Great watch.

The Brutalist
It's a very very long movie esp. when there is an intermission; just be careful it's 3.5 hrs doesn't necessary go by fast.

Plot - Hungarian-Jewish Holocaust survivor Adrien is an architect building a concrete building; funded by a rich businessman who is played by Guy Pearce.
The acting is great and I do understand the ups and downs between the characters. It spans 1947 to 1950 then jumps to 1980.

With 3 chapters, there is just too much to pick on and / or appreciate. Truly think this is too long of a movie with so much to nail down.

I did not know Brutalist = a design, architect style, 1950s, minimalist, bare building materials, exposed, unpainted concrete or brick...I think just knowing this would give an audience a better understand of the movie.

Can't imagine anyone would watch the movie in one sitting.

*huge controversy was the director / team used AI to make their dialect totally perfect.

Baby Girl.
Script was actually decent and ending did wrap it up nicely. I thought it was better then (just marginally) compared to 50 shades of grey. There were a few moments which was cringe cause Nicole is so old. IN a way it was a soft erotic and not as crazy as 50 shades.
It did bold well esp when Halina Reijn wrote and directed it. Everyone did a decent job and not a character too much.
It's quite a scene when you see Nicole being in such great shape, i can't recommend anyone else to play the role, maybe Jolie?

It's a very tough Me Too topic so I'm sort of glad it played out well and nothing too bad. Totally a chick flick / erotica so it's a very niche spread of audience so I'm just glad it made a profit.
