Oscars love giving best actress awards to women who play hookers.
I'm serious, look it up, over a dozen Oscars were awarded to women playing roles as prostitutes. It's pretty fascinating.
I personally thought The Substance was a better film and better acted by Demi Moore, but meh, Oscars always get a hardon for a particular movie and throw the awards at it.
I have to agree, I almost always don't think the winner of the best movie can possibly be the best movie but hey ...
2024 Anora
2023 Oppenheimmner
2022 Everything Everywhere All at Once
2021 CODA
2020 Nomadland
2019 Parasite
2018 Green Book
2017 Shape of Water ... WTF?
I don't even know how to rate this. It was odd, and nothing amazing but not terrible at the same time. It's just a bit of a wonky sci-fi movie.
Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy [2011] - 9/10
I don't think I even fully got it, since I'm not good with names and there were a lot of people involved, but this is an amazing Cold War spy film with a lot of stars in the cast. It's slower paced but by no means is it dull.

12 monkeys was really weird and that was before I had internet to try to decipher back then.
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy - had a really solid cast. I remember it was a really good spy vs spy vs spy which i had to watch the preview to jog my memory.

You get the idea ...
DID NOT like 2024 Anora
This was pretty decent 2023 Oppenheimmner
This I did NOT like 2022 Everything Everywhere All at Once
I actually didn't think CODA was that bad. 2021 CODA
Frances McDormand did a solid job on this.2020 Nomadland
This was epic.. so many deep layers for a good movie 2019 Parasite
I remember it was a good movie I think I thought Bohemian Rhapsody and A Star Is Born were much better choice 2018 Green Book
It was actually a solid movie..2017 Shape of Water
It's sort of a heist film but not a very good one. It had a few good elements but overall the premise and plot were pretty weak. Maybe they worked better back in 92 when the tech was still newer.
Predator [1987] - 9/10
Somehow I'd never actually watched it before. The way the Predator is revealed must've been amazing back in the day when it was all new. Even seeing it now the slow reveal was fantastic. The human laugh at the end was super weird and felt out of place but the rest of the movie was great.

Predator is probably one of my first movie memories (lol asian parents totally cool with showing young kids violent movies, but super conservative for nudity and sex haha) and continues to be a favorite.
So many good one-liners.

I remember loving 12 Monkeys when I saw it... I remember renting the DVD from Blockbuster or Rogers lol... but I cant for the life of me remember what exactly it was. Have to rewatch sometime.
I think a TV show of the same name came out after the fact?
Paddington in Peru
Ain't that bad. We watched all 2 previous movies until we watched this one. FYI, Emily Mortimer took over Sally Hawkins cause (mom's role) cause she said she was done with the movie / character.
Same type of story line; death stare, sandwich in hat, family spirit tying things together. Like before, the script was done nicely, PG13, and just family film for all ages. Bit of onion cutting at the end; maybe it was my wife's hormones, truly a happy go lucky movie. Nothing too crazy, shocking at all.
Antonio Banderas joint the case which was similar to Jungle Cruise type character which was also meh.
You will notice first bit of the way there is a pic of Paddington the bear with Queen Elizabeth pic (Ma’amalade sandwich skit with QE II Jubliee skit on youtube)
Kraven
#1 there are no post credits; err was it cause they knew the movie sucked that they didn't even do one?
So so sad that 110 M with only 60M at box office. Guess the director's big break was being director and writer for Margin Calls and triple frontier. This one sadly was just crap.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson was the lead and I gotta say, no chemistry (thank GOD there wasn't any romance story line) and no charisma in the movie. The script was ok to be honest, it's like figuring out how spider man got their powers but sadly, they explained 15 mins in and then tried to revisit it exactly an hour later.
Action was meh, story was really NOT good, the family dynamic was decent to say the least (Russell Crowe plays the dad). To give it a good spin, the part that was GOOD, was at the last 5 minutes. JUST when they tried to wrap things up, it was pulling on solid story line mystery strings; but you know it's the end esp when it's 2 hrs in.
The Modelizer
If this movie wasn't based in HK, i woudl not have watched it. I ultimately stayed awake for the streets of HK. Byron Mann is the HK CBC actor and honestly, because he was in a few HK movies, I watched it for that too. Did not know he's 57 dang.
Rayssa Bratillieri was the female lead and she plays a true Brazilian model falling for a playboy.
Reason why this movie was made; well cauaes Byron wrote the story himself. See this as B line Crazy Rich Asians with little nudity, tons of models trying to piece a love story together. To give it a break, the love story between all were actually decent. Nothing cheesy and all fell into place. The easter egg credit scene was really not needed as who wants to see an old woman.
All in all, cheezy HK love story hollywood romance story which i watched it purly for the HK scenry.
When I think of Byron Mann my first memory will always be that 17 year old kid watching the Corruptors in the theatre with the boys seeing him as part of the The Fukienese Dragons lol. Ahh good memories and who can forget Uncle Benny!

SUCH a intense, jam packed film. Really nicely done. Super small production with not so famous cast - Peter Sarsgaard (i've loved him in An Education, but I don't remember much of him); everyone else was really a no body.
Just so you know, it's based on a true story, 1972, 1st time live Olympics with an attack in Germany. I don't want to spoil to movie despite it's a real story.
Ending is intense roller coaster with an abrupt cliff dropping stop; definitely a tough way to close. I'm still dealing with it.
If you get a chance to watch this, this is what a good script looks like esp when this movie was based in 1972.
The Brutalist
It's a very very long movie esp. when there is an intermission; just be careful it's 3.5 hrs doesn't necessary go by fast.
Plot - Hungarian-Jewish Holocaust survivor Adrien is an architect building a concrete building; funded by a rich businessman who is played by Guy Pearce.
The acting is great and I do understand the ups and downs between the characters. It spans 1947 to 1950 then jumps to 1980.
With 3 chapters, there is just too much to pick on and / or appreciate. Truly think this is too long of a movie with so much to nail down.
I did not know Brutalist = a design, architect style, 1950s, minimalist, bare building materials, exposed, unpainted concrete or brick...I think just knowing this would give an audience a better understand of the movie.
Can't imagine anyone would watch the movie in one sitting.
*huge controversy was the director / team used AI to make their dialect totally perfect.
Baby Girl.
Script was actually decent and ending did wrap it up nicely. I thought it was better then (just marginally) compared to 50 shades of grey. There were a few moments which was cringe cause Nicole is so old. IN a way it was a soft erotic and not as crazy as 50 shades.
It did bold well esp when Halina Reijn wrote and directed it. Everyone did a decent job and not a character too much.
It's quite a scene when you see Nicole being in such great shape, i can't recommend anyone else to play the role, maybe Jolie?
It's a very tough Me Too topic so I'm sort of glad it played out well and nothing too bad. Totally a chick flick / erotica so it's a very niche spread of audience so I'm just glad it made a profit.
99% of you don't watch these movies but it's good for me to keep track of what crap movies I've watched. It's a sleeper, slow, yet deep circle of life script. The cast was solid and really did the best they could. I don't blame them as it's a low budget movie.
Divorced single mother - 2 kids; daughter and son are from 2 diff dads.
Son is going thru a divorce. To be x wife yells at husband as self fish prick "it's all me me me".
End of movie, the bf yells at the gf saying why she gotta be a bitch in front of their 1st outing with his BFFs. He yells at her always being "me me me".
What a circle of life huh.
The protagonist / female lead of the movie went on dating app; had a one night stand and the guy ditched her and left after sex and was pissed cause she was a virgin. She kept going back to the restaurant they went to and having a hard time letting go - everything said in the restaurant turned out to be all lies..... (DUHHHH.... don't hate the player... hate the game. it's just netflix and chill....
I enjoyed it as the cast did an amazing job on a mediocre script.
惡行之外》(英語:Beyond The Sin)
Louis Koo did a movie that was a b line movie. Script was not exciting at all. The ending reveals how it all came about. Turns out the serial killer was a dad trying to 'pay back his dues' on neglecting his family in HK. He tries to get his son off from going to jail hence killing any withness with an unique disability.
2 lead in the movie were big casts yet the only thing to praise was the last 2 min of dead beat son versus dad.
Total waste of brain power - so sad Louis Koo had to go this low to be in a shit movie.
武替道 Stuntman - saved the best for last.
DANG this is solid, been waiting for this for a while as it was hyped up. It did not disappoint.
Stunt Coordinator lost his job due to an accident filming an 80s jackie chan movie. Got hired to film a movie and how he earned his respect in the industry.
Very well put together script.
Few key things
a) they redid a solid 10 min of 80 jackie chan movie "A Police Story", which was super cool.
b) all relationship, characters, and casting were amazing. It's a true tribute to all the HK stuntman industry.
c) the lead / has been director was an actual stunt coordinator in the 80s and last actor role was back in 1992.
d) Ending roll credits ends abruptly and then cuts back to the story.
e) the tension from daughter with dad was well written.
f) there were a few short, 5 minute scenes esp the one in the restaurant was touching.
A movie becomes great when you're lead on, and you're cringing for the lead character and you're just sitting there holding it all in. You feel for the character despite knowing it's going to happen. You know they are going to cut onions and yet you have a tear coming... what a great director making the scenes work all together.
Movie broke even at $1.3 M CD with 20% profile. I'm just glad they had a great script.

Cesium Fallout 焚城
This is the first disaster movie in HK; yes it's Andy Lau and surpringsly, didn't give a crap about him. Really enjoyed Karen Mok (and she's not really an A class actress) and the entire moving has unnecessary romantic side stories.
Yes, it's not the best and the CGI is not epic & audio-ly (is that even a word), was crap due to the Cantonese dubbing lol.
Given a movie that's 2 hours long, it was very solidly put together. The cast had easily 20 people so 4 - 5 story line and it all fit.
Great to see a Karen Mok playing a good lead and honestly, I can emphasize sometimes government is playing some tough roles - not cause panic while shutting down hong kong.
From biohazard, to fire fighting to dentation squad... there's a lot going on and have to say the script paced well enough to not go too overboard. Have to say it came together with 5 seasoned script writers - most of them were in high profile 2000-2010 movies era.
By the way, this movie fits well because it was written FOR Hong Kong. Given the ending, I didn't know how it was going to end and the final hour solution was really written for a hong kong situation. Thought it was a nice touch. Eg// you're not going find this ending say in Vancouver, or Toronto or Edmonton so I really appreciated that.
Don't want to give it away, but you'll get it when you see it.
Our family of 8 watched it together and didn't fall asleep and didn't go look at our phones esp. given 12,16,40,70 yr olds were just enjoying the popcorn.
Netflix series (only 4 episodes) - Adolescence
Holy MOLLY, such a GREAT 4 episodes.
Background - ALL 4 episode were 1 shot take. Each episode represents a day.
Story - kid gets arrested due to an interaction with a girl.
Finding out what the kid did - episode 1
What the school is doing - uncovering a bit - episode 2
6 mths later - evaluation - episode 3 (this is by far the best TV / Acting / i've seen in a while - freaking strong acting, tense, powerful, *1 shot take, anger, laughter, fear, outburst, pysc..... , truly worthy) Entire episode was 49 with 2 characters only in a room.
Erin Doherty - (she was in the The Crown as Anne, Princess Royal) did a solid on the episode.
9 months later - Family - episode 4
A review was on Vancouver Sun so it was pretty cool to see different aspect.
The write was given a premise and they were told a) it was a one shot take 1 hr episode and b) you can't end the story blaming particular people (no spoiler).
All in all, extremely great acting and mystery. The kid was 15 in the show but played a 14 year old. Wife and I really enjoyed episode but then it fell apart in episode 4(wife didn't like when the mystery crumbled). The acting was just amazing despite knowing this is the end.
It's about life, school, teens, social media, and a lot of modern shit that you never thought about. Woudl recommend if you want a short but series well acted series.
Elevation
Captain America - why you gotta do some bad movies? Guess your contract had you obligated to do this?
Slow, linear, uninteresting script. No chemistry between cast, even I can see how Morena Baccarin was bad a holding a gun LOL.
It wasn't until the end it says sort of why the creatures can't go above 8000 ft - still a lame ass ending.
Gosh, I wish I had osmething better to say on this tier 3 movie.
