The Recommend-Me-A-Phone Thread! Because this is a very common topic, I'm thinking we should put all the "help me choose a phone" questions here. So ask away! Don't know what to trade for? Ask here. Significant other wants a new phone? Ask here. Don't know what to trade your significant other for? DON'T ask here. :p You can ask about phone to buy in Hong Kong, etc. and any questions about a specific phone that you're interested in. Anyhoo, here's a bit of what we need from you before we can start recommending! (thanks masterwoo39!) Quote:

didnt know where to ask so im asking here... has anyone been purchasing anything online recently? such as.. phones? my coworker was telling me that canadian dollar is MORE than US dollar. that didnt surprise me too much but then he said that we'd be getting that rate on paypal... now the issue is.. i bought something on paypal a week or 2 ago and im pretty sure that it was about the same. anyways heres my question. does paypal go by the actual rate? or.. do they charge a premium on top of the actual rate? if we get the actual rate where do you suggest ordering a phone from? i hear mixed reviews about plemix. |
The dollar is worth more, but PayPal's rates lag a bit, and are probably not as good as they should be to reflect a "premium". |
Plemix, also known as x1387 on ebay is generally pretty good. The thing is though, they ship with UPS, and you are going to need to pay duties/ taxes etc when you get the package. From what i have heard, expect to pay around 30-40 cnds in duties/taxes for a phone that's around 400-500USD. These guys ship superquick though...you can expect your phone in about 2-3 days after you have paid. I have also recently bought a couple phones from ebay via the auction method...(not brand new phones, but lightly used phones). Sometimes you can get good deals...I get them to ship via USPS when possible, as it's safer in terms of avoiding to pay duties/taxes. |

speaking of lost packages...i ordered a Moto Z6 from ebay and shipped via USPS and i was told that it's been lost.... The seller said he would refund me the full amount i am still waiting for my $$ back. So i guess think twice before you order from ebay / online...lol |

I know what you mean though. Even though you can find better prices online, sometimes its better to pay a little more just to be safe and get it locally. |

I waited like 2 weeks for the Z6 and was then informed it's been lost... anyways, enough of this sad story...haha..we are drifting off topic here.. any good phones that you phone whores like to recommend? |
That depends. :) Quote:

lets see what you guys recommend me - how much do you want to spend? less than $500 - what do you want to use it for? everyday use, as a nice backup from a feature heavy phone, something light and not afraid to drop - what form factor do you like? candybar, slider, maybe flip if it has an external screen or looks very nice) - is there a certain brand you like? not at the moment. but i dislike LG and samsung (except maybe g6/800 but too expensive anyways) that means... the big 3 are good (SE, Nokia, Motorola) |
^ Moto V8/V9? |
im holding off on the v8 until i hear some good things about it or the price finally drops to where it should be. im not too adventurous with the new OS too.. got to see if people love it or hate it. i want to get the z8 too but its a little pricey right now. *edit im also afraid of dropping the v8 because its going to look like crap if i do, like the one in mobile review.com lol |
lol won't every phone look like crap if you drop it? But i guess some would look crappier than others...haha Z8 is an interesting phone. But i still think it's somewhat awkward looking. I still wanna try out the Z6 one of these days. |
V8 is nicer physically than the V9 methinks. The V9 is surprisingly bulky, with the 3G and all. The difference is subtle, yet very apparent once you hold it. |
bulky phones are good. am i right? yes i'm right :D EDIT: ^unless they're bulky AND ugly. Yuck. |

Its slim, yet very solid with the metal body Plus Dual QVGA screens *drools* However, I wanna get back to a candybar, but whats a good solid candybar these days?:( Only one that comes to mind is the k800. That was a good candybar Yay or nay for bronze k800? |
I just got back from living in Japan and I'm appalled at the lack of phones in Canada and how expensive they are. Without having to import and crack my own phone, is there anything people would recommend? I'd like to have intuitive menus, a camera, and a decent screen. Thanks. BTW, my phone in Japan was the Sharp 905SH (last year's) |
haha good luck finding a replacement for the sharp 905sh... honestly, nothing could really top phones like that cept for maybe Nokia N-series.. the next highest on the line to ur 905sh would be a 903sh :( |
japan has cellphones incorporated with life there. we have cell phones as accessories. its impossible for the rest of the world to compete with japan for cellphones. |

The most different handset we have is the iPhone, which ironically isn't available in Japan yet. |
- how much do you want to spend? anywhere from 300 to 500 - what do you want to use it for? text mainly, for show purposes - what form factor do you like? pda style - is there a certain brand you like? looking around @ the e61i and the tytn 1, tytn 2 is out of price range |
tytn 1 definitely, i love it. texting is a breeze, calendar and task functions are great. its kind of stupid because i cant figure out how to use only sim contacts... so when i save something it wills ave on my phone and i'll have to save it on to sim later. my other gripe with it is that its slow. not fast enough when i have a bunch of things on my today screen. |
