I went months ago, close to when they first opened.
Had a pork belly confit w/ salad. One of the simplest and best salads I have had.

I'm hoping that the place hasn't gone that far down hill...

I always try to wait out a new restaurant opening just to see if they can keep the momentum. Too many restaurants in our city ride the initial wave, get favourable feedback, subsequently get too comfortable and then crap the bucket.

Funny thing about service at a "hipster" place, it's practically always bad (in my experience). We were one of two occupied tables that day.

Shame as I actually like the philosophy of these types of restaurants - but the smugness and arrogance ensures hilarity.

Seoul Dookbaegi
8/10

Fried dumplings - big, juicy and plump. Vegetable and filling reminded me of a potsticker but juicy like a gyoza.

Seafood pancake - lots of "stuff" in it, notably good sized chunks of squid. One of the better ones I've had as it wasn't too greasy.

BBQ shortribs - mediocre/decent cut in terms of tenderness. Great marinade and flavour.

Spicy pork - Big mound of thinly sliced pork mixed with vegetables on a sizzling plate.

Condiments consisted of pickled bean sprouts, glazed potatoes, kimchi, pickled diakon, pickled broccoli with some red peppers and sliced onions and something else I forget. No seawood though. Comes with a bowl of rice.

I'm not too familiar with Korean cuisine but really good overall meal with tons of leftovers. Looks like a family run place with only one woman handling floor service.

American Cheesesteak Co.
7.5/10

The Philly with sauteed onions and provolone 6"
Le Bifteck 6"
ACC fries
Onion rings
Bottled root beer

Just beat the rush this evening. Deceptively small but generously filled with shaved beef. The beef itself is rather dry and the sauteed onions were hardly what I would call caramelized - more like steamed with barely any colour. The bifteck was good and was drizzled with balsamic vinegar - could hardly taste the dijon. Brie made it really heavy. Overall, both sandwiches were surprisingly filling and dense but the Philly is pretty bland. ACC fries were mediocre. They were not crisp and the addition of parmesan, parsley and garlic tasted completely absent. Onion rings were great and I really liked the sprinkling of coarse salt over the top, but a touch salty.

Although mostly self serve the staff seemed to go out of their way to clear tables. Nice.

Price seems ok $32 and change which is about the same for a couple of burgers.

Korean Pork Belly Beer House.. or Pork Belly BBQ House

Bidwell & Robson.

Post from 2010.

Pork Belly Beer House on Bidwell and Robson, Vancouver | 604 Foodtography

Things are slightly different, AYCE starts @ 15, stay for an hour and it's $16 and every 30min from then is another $1. They now include BEEF, which is a good alternative/balance to the fatty pork.

Went there at 6, (they open at 5) and they were already busy, waited 30 minutes and got a table for 4. Stayed for 2 hours, ate our way through 5 plates..was feeling super greasy at the end though. An awesome meal, I can't wait to try out the real samgyeopsal in Korea one day...

Oh I should add, the owner (you'll recognize him) thought we were retards and kept helping us flip the meat, adjust the fire, etc.. (Y) haha great service [rarity for korean restaurants], very quick on the refills, and if they don't, just get up and grab it yourself, everything's on the counter.

Joe Forte's

10/10

Seafood tower, fried oysters, calarmari, new york steak, sirloin steak, creme brulee, bottle of wine.

Service was awesome, my water and wine were refilled religiously, our server and busser was super friendly. Gave my mom's dessert for free cus it was her bday.

The food was great, the fried stuff was awesome, not too oily at all. The seafood tower was super fresh, especially the oysters. So yum.

everything came to 260 after tip and tax, which i thought was extremely cheap, for feeding 5 people with barely enough room for one shared dessert.

Spoiler!
LOL I swear they keep making tiny changes to how their menu works. It's so damn complicated for no reason lol.

Still, have to find my porkbelly card when I get home so I can get some 2 for 1. I'm really going to miss the samyeopsal in Korea.

that sounds really reasonable for what you get, basically you spent only $200 plus hst and then 15%tip= 260

Thats how much i spend on two people if we end up ordering wine with our appies, mains, and no dessert.

It's terrible. Don't even bother.

Try Nan Chuu on Alexandra Road. The same staff who worked at G-men are there so I think that's their new location. It's no Santouka (my personal fav place) but good enough so you don't have to trek downtown. They're only open for dinner right now, but they're open quite late. I asked about lunch, as they have a lunch menu on the back, and they said they will open for lunch once they have more staff.

Pho Boi is fucking gross, steer clear from it.

I got super bad service from it.

Ordered Pho Tai Bo Vien (Thin slices of beef with beef balls), and they forgot the beef balls in my bowl.

When they came out with the beef balls, I was absolutely pissed off cause it was only two halves in a small plate

Even Hoi An gives a generous amount of meat in their Pho.

0/10 for Pho Boi

-2164871648136/10 for their service
