minami sushi @ yale town

tuna tartar. was stylish but needed a bit less wasabi.

the steak that was cut in half, i think it was a tenderloin. ZERO FLAVOUR. DO NOT GET . I REPEAT!! DO NOT BUY!! waste of fucking money

salmon aburi, oh god my favourite dish...... tasted like it had oyster motoyaki topping (the cheese/mayo/butter or w/e it is) in the middle.... so good 10/10

oysters were too sweet. Had mandarin and sweet sauce

the soba noodles were nothing special.... would not order again. no flavour in the seafood one!!

sushi samplers, very good! i say the sushi is way better than their hot dishes!

green tea layer cake, very tasty! 9/10 would buy again.

Uni nigiri, large pieces, veryyyy big

7.5/10 , only the tuna tartar/uni nigiri/sushi samplers and the best (salmon aburi) saved it. Rest is downhill.........

Was back in town last month from HK. The burgers/sandwiches suck horse cock here in HK so I had a huge craving. Here are the places I went and ratings;

50's Burgers/Lost in the 50's Burger:

Texas BBQ Burger

6/10 - I'm not sure of all the hype around this place is... I didn't think it was any good really. The patty wasn't anything to write home about. This was the 6oz'r (bigger already). It wasn't 'grilled' enough, tasted a bit 'wet' like a Mcdonald's patty.

Boomer's Drive-In, Bellingham

7.5/10 - Sorry, bad picture and honestly their burgers didn't look that great on the table, but I don't know what it was about it, it was simple, yet just the right amount of sauce and the patty was much better than the one at 50s.

Smokehouse Sandwich Co.

The Samson (Beef Brisket Sandwich)

9.5/10 - This was my highlight of my time back in Vancouver. It was honestly the best sandwich I've had, so far (Now I don't go around looking for sandwiches all the time, it was just something I craved while back in Van.) It was just so good I actually came back to Smokehouse to try a couple of their others (Pulled Pork and Pork Belly) They were both still very good, but I'd say the Beef Brisket is definately the best.

White Spot

Bigger Burger

8/10 - Yeah I know some of your are like 'white spot' wtf are you on. But it always hits the spot for me. The patty was thick, very well cooked, charred and juicy enough inside. I'd seriously just hit up White Spot any day rather than make the trek to Boomer's or 50's now've that I tried them.

The other spot I always go besides white spot for a burger is Flying Beaver for the Kaluha Burger and Yam Fries, I always order the same thing. Always a solid 8/10 as well

Kazu Japanese Restaurant on Hastings Street, Burnaby. Opened recently.

Not bad. It is Japanese owned and operated. Prices are okay.

Small, quiet place. I went a couple of days ago and the place had nothing but Japanese customers. Pretty quiet. No loud talking or chewing with mouths wide open. It was refreshing and the food had traditional Japanese flavour. Almost "ofukuro no aji".

Yes, a Hawaiian who knows a little Japanese, LOL.

I would give it 8/10 for now. Must go back and try other dishes to give proper assessment.

Portions are what they are supposed to be, so if you want Sushi Garden huge ass portions, don't go.

Red Fish Blue Fish -> their tacones are money

Pig BBQ -> Big fan of their pulled pork poutine. I haven't tried too many of the other items on their menu, but from what I hear, it's pretty good.

Bin 4 -> their burgers are slightly on the expensive side, but they are effin GOOD

Also if you're into waffles, Wanna Waffle is also a good place for dessert. You can usually smell the place before you see it if you're walking through Johnson street.

Burnside Brewing Co in Portland.

Had the burger and fries, 10 bucks. Asked for white cheddar on the burger, and it was super tasty. Fries were all right too, and served with what they called fry sauce. Seems like just ketchup, mayo and sugar mixed together. Also had their pale ale on tap, which was also good.

9/10

Also hit up Cascade Brewing Barrel House for more beers after, and tried their sours. Coffee one was super good, and also had blueberry, maraschino cherry, honey ginger lime, and some others I can't recall off the top of my head.

Both places were a 5-10 minute walk from the hotel I was at, in downtown. Gotta head back to Portland just for their food and beer, one day. Or week.

Solid again, pretty much can't go wrong ordering anything off the menu. It's all very tasty and they have daily specials which is nice.

Hapa Izakaya at Coal Harbor. The chef(s) must have lost big time at the casino because the food was absolute crap.

Ordered about 20 items and the only thing I appreciated was the assortment of sashimi and the cheese tofu =\

4/10

I've never had a good experience at Hapa.
Went to Araxi in whistler.
Food was really good. Definitely a whistler tax put on it for what you get. New York steak was great, rabbit was good, but the cauliflower puree was not a nice touch to the dish IMO. Its so strong for a delicate flavour like rabbit, and it also drowned out the mustard vinaigrette. Steak tartare was great, and had an original twist the way it was served. 8/10
Service was a huge stand out. Waiter was engaging, attentive, professional and never overbearing. 10/10
Price - As said the whistler tax was prevalent. You can get incredible food in vancouver for mid 20s to low 30s a plate. This was really good food, for around 40+ a plate. 6/10
Overall the experience was really good, and nice for a special occasion. I'd go again, but I'll wait until I'm a bit wealthier.
8/10
