You can't simply use a blanket statement and say sushi in the USA is far more superior to that of Vancouver.

It would help if you were more specific. There are so many God awful Japanese restaurants in Los Angeles and New York so if you came across a gem, I think your post might have been much more appreciated if you listed where.

Went to kiriri in richmond recently.

Food 7/10
Service 7/10
Value 6/10

Ordered the salmon tartar, beef tataki, some Toro and mirugai sashimi and a scallop roll. Toro was disappointing and the mirugai was pretty good. Everything else was average and overpriced. Would rather go elsewhere next time.

Seasons in the Park 5/10.

Was there for a private party and so was a fixed menu, might not be representative of their entire menu. However the food was so pedestrian, just your typical 'fancy' place food. Tenderloin, yukon gold mashed potatoes loaded with butter, and sauteed greens.

Oh it's representative of their regular menu alright. Decided to give it another try after a few years recently for mothers day. Ended up trying a bit from everyone's dish (around 6 dishes can't recall) and they were all very meh. Nice view, great location, avg at best food.

Just went to the pourhouse for their burger again, 8/10 this time because apparently burgers can't be made medium rare legally anymore. Can any chefs of rs confirm?

I've heard nothing of the sort. As long as the meat is ground in house it can be served raw if they like. It's not like tartare is illegal.

I had to tell guests the same thing when I was a server several years ago. All our burgers had to be cooked pretty much well-done. But after doing some research it's not actually illegal to serve, just really frowned upon. As westopher mentioned, steak tartare isn't illegal.

Medium-rare burgers are taboo in Canada but may not be as perilous as thought | National Post

Quote:
The official “safe” temperature for hamburger meat, as enshrined in municipal codes and provincial acts across Canada, is 71 degrees Celsius, eight degrees higher than the generally accepted threshold for medium rare.

Vancouver’s health inspectors claim they are equally rigorous. “Every so often a restaurant will come up and advertise pink burgers, and we will go in and talk to them,” said Anna Marie D’Angelo, spokeswoman for Vancouver Coastal Health, the city’s health inspection agency.
THE WORD ON MEDIUM-RARE BURGERS | Vancouver Sun

Quote:
It isn’t unlawful to serve medium-rare burgers — some restaurants, in fact, sell fresh-ground beef tartare (which I recently had at Market at the Shangri-La and less recently at Pied-a-Terre bistro).

Losito does, however, discourage operators from serving under-cooked house-ground beef and says most places don’t because their insurance companies and lawyers probably advise against it. He says there is potential for slight risk of contamination in large cuts of meat but not to the extent of mass-produced ground beef which come from hundreds of sources and where the DNA is untraceable. With a single source, one knows where it’s from and can control for quality. If they choose to serve medium-rare burgers, the restaurant must show a food safety plan in place and the steps being.

Def part of their regular. I was there just for dinner few weeks ago, no special reason. Had the exact same dish lol. Absolutely very meh. Though view was great, service was on point and I managed to find a pretty good inexpensive wine from their huge list.

My first review

Bambudda

Upon reading reviews and looking at pictures I decided to take the ol' lady here for her b'day. I've eaten chinese food my whole life and was never really interested in asian fusion, but I decided to give it ago. Made reservations a week prior online and received a reminder email 2 days before dinner. Well that was easy. Showed up to an empty restaurant @630 and was seated way in the back by the pick up window. HRMMM...

The waitress went over the menu with us and notified us that a quarter of the menu was unavailable. Unfortunately the items that weren't available were of course the ones I wanted.
Thursday evening, an hour after opening, empty restaurant and a quarter of the menu unavailable??!! Not impressed.
Ordered 2 cocktails, tasted great, nice presentation, but way overpriced. Ordered Pork and Foie Gras Dumplings, Beef Heart Tartare, Pork cheeks on rice, Beer Braised short rib side of ramen.
The food was great tasting however small portioned and way over priced. Was still hungry so was looking forward to desert!

Waitress brought out a desert menu. Desert consisted of 3 items. She then informed us that another item was unavailable. Not impressed at all. Wasn't in the mood so skip desert. Bill total 102$.

Walked over to L'Abattoir for some appetizers and dessert. Now im full.

Bottom line, main points are.
Everything I ordered was by default.
Everything taste wise was good.
Drinks were entertaining.
Nothing against the waitress, she was great. Except for when I asked her what those crunchy bits in the rice were (water chestnut?) she didn't know.
Way over priced.
Menu online is completely different than in house.
I like to support local chef's and small businesses, but such a big price for such small food.

Glad I tried it but will not return.

Sorry to hear about your experience.

Curtis Luk left Bambudda and went to open up a new restaurant in Kits called Mission. The food at Bambudda needs a lot of work, one of the primary reasons I have not gone back. That and the food has strayed away from modern Chinese over to fusion, something I am not a fan of.

Seating you far at the back makes no sense. Must be a new server. I suggest you get in touch with the owner to provide feedback.

The cocktail prices are on par with most places in Gastown. Side note - they have a chef's menu for $38/person. I think you would have come out top with more food for around the same price. Mind you, I'm not a big eater. The food items you ordered would have easily been more than satisfying for me and a friend.

Sounds like a 2/10 will not return type of experience.

^ i agree.

asian fusion is not the best place for value but the drinks is on par for gastown.
it's not the best place to go to be "full", it's a good place to hop.

I am concerned why 1/2 the menu was not available though.

Half the menu being unavailable (on a Thursday?) is not good for anyone. Someone dropped the ball and it cost them dearly.

Yeah, burger done-ness isn't a legality thing here.
It's for liability.

I have a real thing for burgers, but every time I ask about getting my burger medium-rare, I'm always told "It can't be done, but I'll double check for you".

I find burgers to be very troublesome. It's a ton of prep to do it justice.
So I just usually go out and eat and overcooked burger.
