Osteria Savio Volpe
kingsway and fraser, right along side of Les Faux Bourgeois.
it was 5:30 and it was already booked. Newly done and excited to go. Simple and elegant decoration. Known for it's Italian food. Remember it's NOT downtown expensive type place, it's more of a neighbourhood type relaxed place, all for sharing. Not overprice and no crazy foam creations shit.
1) Salumi, pane rustico, giardiniera $14 Cured & Preserved ham and stuff. They had a duck pate; naturally done with no preservative = green in color. tad weird to eat green color pate, oh well. not bad. typical.
2) Black kale, lemon pepper dressing, pecorino, crisp bread $12
this was pretty good. medium size bowl, great for sharing, pretty good.
Beets, grilled chicories, gorgonzola, vincotto, almonds $16
also legit.
(why is it these day i'm more eager to give veggies a shot and it's awesome, whereas main course meat dishes are usually shit)
3) In House Handmade Pasta
Tortiglioni, shortrib braciola, Sunday sugo $16
Short rib pasta, again, smaller neighbourhood size but it was boring as shit.
Yes their tortiglioni is chewy because it's house made, bravo. I could taste the difference. Then presentation was shit, the sauce is WORSE than what I can make. A 15 yr old with canned red sauce and adding salt, pepper, FRESH herbs and red pepper flakes would have been better than this. the short ribs were meh. not memorable.
all in all, smaller size I didn't mind but dang being italian, I expected much more.
IF you mixed the kale and it's cripsy crumbs, it was edible.
4) Steak Over-the-Coals (Dry-aged Cache Creek Beef)
Top sirloin, garlic, parsley $25 (8oz)
legit and solid dish. the over the coal was really good and it was a good 8 oz I tell you. They slit it open in half and bottom has a olive and herb sauce. Not epic sauce to rave about yet it worked perfectly.
5) Red cabbage, apple, red wine $5
not bad, came with cast iron dish to share. So yeah.. meh. Do need some veggies so it worked.
6) red wine pear that's roasted or baked for dessert with a white sauce.
really meh. pear wasn't poached long enough to be fully red. somehow when they roast it, it makes the shell really dry. poach pear is smooth yet when you roast it, tasted like the skin was still on.
They do have a decent wine list, didn't have the chance to crack open anything epics but when you see a "neighbourhood" place with $200 bottle of wine it's interesting.
i give it a 7.5 Lot of pretty people eating there, you don't see any foodies with iphone taking pics at all. prices are actually legit for what they serve which met my expectations.
I just can't get over the poor pasta dish.

I regularly eat at Tomokazu on Broadway in Vancouver. Its an all-you-can-eat sushi place, that for about $25/person dinner you can eat like a king! Their food is always hot and fresh, and their selection of sashimi is big, including all you can eat Toro Sashimi. Plus the biggest thing I like is they have all-you-can-eat raw oysters! I've been eating at this location for over a period of 5-years. The food quality did go downhill for a while (the food wasn't fresh or pipping hot when it came to your table, they cheated you on how many pieces of sashimi you got when you ordered, etc etc), but ever since the summer something drastically changed, and now everything is tip-top great again! Even the raw oysters got bigger and fresher! Always have a good time and enjoy going there, best bang for the buck!

Hachibei 8.5/10 - First time and arrived at 6pm with reservations made. The small restaurant was full for dinner time, quite popular for a small little place.
Ordered the salmon terriyaki combo box and bc roll. Was quite full myself. It appears the popular dish is the black cod as it sells out quick. Only downside was, they didn't refill my tea and servers only came to take our order and away the dishes.

Yuji's (on Alma)
order omakasae for their courses. it came out in a nice box for their appetizers. cute presentation, gotta give them that.
their 6 piece nigiri sushi was just MEH. they did have a soya marinated tuna which was "oh cool"... meh.
dessert was just mochi with ice cream which was probably store purchased?
I gotta go back and see what's epic there. this time around, i'll give them 7.5, will try their full menu next time.

Pizzeria Antico in Whistler
8.5/10
Pizza was great. House made salami, great cheese.
$18 for a 1.89L growler of craft beer
Cool decor, great beer list, simple menu as a Pizzeria should be with a few pasta options and appies.
Honestly the only restaurant I've been to in whistler, that I would actually recommend to people if it happened to be in Vancouver. Their quality dining in Whistler is so fucking dated, or their bar/pub food is so shitty. I'll probably eat here every trip I come up.

Not the same place.
There is Yuji's on alma and 4th, or sushi by Yuji way down kingsway. Different owners, different chef's, both named Yuji.
Thanks for the thoughts about it 6793026. Me and my wife were going to go there yesterday but didn't want to drive anywhere at all after our whistler trip so didn't bother. Just went to hi-nippon for cheap sushi since its walking distance, but honestly as far as cheap sushi goes it was pretty good.

Ken's Chinese Restaurant on Kingsway
Instead of their signature golden crab, I got a golden lobster instead. It was delicious although I haven't tried much others in Vancouver so I don't have a good comparison. The lobster was not expensive at $23.8/lb but there was not a lot of meat. It was great up until an hour and a half later...when I started having diarrhea. Not sure if its from the restaurant as my girlfriend was feeling an upset stomach as well, but nothing came out yet.
Try it if you dare.

^totally was just for the lobster, other dishes, not so much.
So a night has pass, and the only person that seemed to have gotten sick is me so it probably wasn't the restaurant's fault. So go at your own discretion

1827 in Langley
Mainly share plates.
Had the cheese fondue, prawns were the best part of this plate. Portion was huge so we boxed a lot of it to save room. Nothing special but fondue isn't common at restaurants so we had to try it. Likely won't re-order.
Coconut curry mussels were delicious. Some were HUGE. Much larger than mussels I've had elsewhere. Will re-order.
Castelvetrano olives - delicious! Very buttery texture. Will re-order (happy hour menu $4 I believe)
Wild mushroom truffel gnocchi - gnocchi was cut inconsistently and as a result some were cooked better than others. Good nonetheless. Likely won't re-order but not a reflection of how it tasted.
Orange vanilla creme brulee - delicious. Perfect temperature, not overly thick, simply perfect. Would re-order if I was in a dessert mood. Which is not often but it was wifey's bday dinner so we indulged.
Speaking of which, she discovered her new favourite martini. The Blue Balls. Grey Goose, Alize blue and a dash of sprite. Two cranberries which was funny because of the drink's name. Tasted a lot like the blue part of a rocket popsicle which made her reminisce of childhood.
Overall, 8.5/10 and would recommend to check it out if you're ever way out in Fort Langley.

Reason: Blue Alize, not blue curaçao for the martini

Need some recommendations for a Caucasian restaurant that's not too expensive and spacious to have a farewell dinner, maybe 15 - 20 people? Thinking something along the lines of cactus, the keg etc.. Lol

Yolks on Broadway/Cambie. Was it well worth the 45 minute wait? There's always a first for everything in life.
Honey Ham Benny with Hashbrown with Spicy Ketchup. Ketchup added a nice twist to the hashbrown taste. 9/10 experience as I don't like waiting haha.

The big owner of Gothams own Hy's as well. Steaks come with a side at Hy's and are cheaper as well. Tastes the same to me imo. I also get treated better at Hy's too for the most part.
