you can get it on a salad but think of it like this

rice with some small scoops of cubed fish on top (salmon, tuna, ahi tuna) and chipotle (pick your own) style small veggies and garnish.

Poke is a Hawaiian side dish/appetizer that became hipsterfied when it came over here recently and became a thing.

As far as I've known, it's traditionally served with very few garnishes on the side. Mostly just marinated with some onions and peppers with seasoning.

Now it's served with organic kale, avocado, acai berries, etc etc. Which justifies the price that places charge here.

Authentic poke is Hawaiin and not overly garnished like Verdasco's pic.. unlike ceviche they also don't use citrus to 'cook' the seafood so it's more of a seasoned raw dish with local ingredients.

Robson Ebisu has jumped on the Poketrain this month.
RS special, look for me to get more fish

I went to Poke Time, tasted good but I didn't like how when I asked for 2 scoops, they use an ice cream spoon to scrape up the pre-cut tuna, then before they dump it in your bowl they shake the spoon until half of the fish fall out lol ... and it was like $14.

I just came back from Hawaii, the pokebowls there are straight up no garnish marinated tuna on a bed of warm rice for like $9. Unfortunately Ahi Tuna is a lot more expensive in Vancouver so a bowl like they make in Hawaii would cost like $35.

I've always wondered why local places never have an "authentic" version of poke, but rather one with more ingredients. I'd guess it's because of locals thinking "oh I have more stuff this is better than just fish and rice". But I crave poke from time to time but don't want to go through various other ingredients other than the fish and rice. It's too bad given our proximity to Hawaii and almost a region-wide acceptance of sashimi.

I tried Poke for the first time at night market (probably not the best example) and I paid the extra $2 for more fish. Half the container was rice and the other 25% was avocado and chips. I swear it look the same amount as other people who didn't pay the extra. For $10 what a fucking rip off. I can make better Poke just watching The Food Network. It looked nice and all but the flavor was pretty subpar and sure as hell didn't blow my gf or me away.

You don't have to add all that other junk. You could just stop at the fish and rice. Its just gonna cost you the same regardless lol.

Went to the cheese and meat festival tonight at the terminal city club. Event was an a absolute joke. 20 minute lineup for garbage vendors and things like grimms pre packaged pepperoni and $8 bottles of wine.

For $65 we stayed for 30 minutes and left without trying probably a third of the booths because people weren't just going up and sampling everyone was lined up around the room and each person stopped and talked for 2-5 minutes. Absolute joke of an event.

After had reso at wildebeast. Never been there before, good drink list

Ordered the fried chicken, fried chestnuts, and sous vie egg to start. Decent little starters

Had the lamb tartare, bone marrow, and duck breast for mains

Tartare was bland served with home made potato chips. Not very good

Bone marrow was good but typical, with a decently fresh loaf of bread

Duck breast served with a few veggies and a pate was terribly cooked. I very rarely ever complain about a dish but when the wifey said it was like rubber I tasted it and none of the fat had been rendered, inside was essentially rare and still sinewy.

Sent that dish back and was credited for it. I'm never one to return a dish but it was almost inedible.

Overall experience probably a 6.5/10

Don't think I'd repeat just based on cost, experience, and options around.

That's too bad, wildebeest has had a lot of talented cooks come and go, and as a result seems to fluctuate massively in experiences. Also, bummer about the meat fest.
Should have just got some poke I guess.

LIK ice cream

I hated it

3/10

Points for creativity. I like the layout of the shop. Its good for the summer. I got the most popular flavour which was cookie monster?
The ice cream was not good at all I couldnt finish half of it..(i never waste food either) but this time i had to throw it away.
It was too sweet I should've ordered something fruity instead. $7.50 each? Lol understandable since its in DT but meh

Gongcha

9/10

Comparable with coco. I've had this in Vn as well but thought it was better in saigon.
The workers on robson are stupid and always fuck up our orders whenever we go (theres really nothing to fuck up on) but they manage to do so lol

bubble world in richmond , near pearl castle

1) food and drinks

First I wanted to say I love their rice noodles with meat sauce and veggies

very consistent on their veggies/eat and generous with the flavour and amount of food. I always order this, Mango milk tea was awesome (yes, mango milk tea is sooooo 2005 but whatevs) One of the best mango milk tea's I have had in a long time.. tried the same drink and pearl castle and threw it in the garbage after a few sips

2) service

rofl .... it is NON EXISTENT !! The servers ignore you, you have to SHOUT and SCREAM to get one's attention. I feel like young asian servers born in Asia are shy as fuck with the "I DONT GIVE A FUCK ATTITUDE, I GET PAID $10.25, FUCK OFF!" This is their attitude and it is what deteriorates current customers from coming back.

Seriously, the servers lookedl ike they wanted to kill themselves while serving people, and how the fuck do you fuck up on a bubble tea order??!? no pearls? gives me a cup of pearls that was pebbles compared to one they do themselves, seriously....

I will order the dish to go probably and eat it at home for my next visit and not deal with the "I DONT GIVE A FUCK ATTITUDE" IDGAF

4/10

2 points for food, 2 points for drinks

edit:

here is the pic of the dish, off google and looks EXACTLY the same . Consistency A+

Ramen Butcher in Chinatown

Had the garlic oil (black and white ying yang soup)

Style of ramen is thin noodles, same as martama ramen.

Soup was the most hottest ramen soup I have had in the lower mainland, love the garnishes, plenty of soup as well. One of the best ramen bowls I have had imo

Staff was polite, not just ordinary Japanese polite (but like comes to my table and ask if we need water or anything every 5 minutes polite) Which I LOVE!

9/10, would go back

Order this:

Black ramen

TONKOTSU (Pork) Broth with Roasted Garlic Oil. Freshly Made Noodles with ABURI Pork Chashu and a Medium Boild, Perfectly Marinated Egg.

The Aburi Oshi were pretty good, too bad they only have 3 kinds of it

Everything else was pedestrian

costco

the hotdog was freshly made, piping hot, the bun was not soggy.

I filled one side with a line of ketchup, the other relish.

I did a perfect ~~~~~~ wave of mustard along the top.

The salty weiner flavor balanced with the acidity and sweetness of the sauces.

10/10

Jokes aside, Costco is the shit when you're attending an event at either stadium and don't want to pay a premium for food inside. Hot dog and poutine for ~7 dollars opens you up to buy more overpriced adult beverages inside.

Pokeritto
9/10

Had the haunama with brown rice and crispy onions on top. It was pretty yummy. Second time eating poke so I don't really know if this is the best but I will say it is the best I've had so far.

The first time I had poke was at oki-san on fraser and I thought it was just alright... since it was served with japanese white rice. Their chunks of salmon were too big for my liking

Saw the bubble world review and reminded me of my experience with bbt shop.

Soho Tea Room

Been here a few times. Inconsistent food.

1st time I ordered "Taiwanese Beef Noodle"... it came out as beef UDON ... and tasted bland. Super weird, pretty disappointed.
2nd time Beef Noodle - It was spicy which was good, and they finally changed the noodle to "ho fun" which was acceptable but still not really authentic beef noodle.
3rd time Beef noodle - Soup was bland, beef was tough, same ho fun.
Probably never getting beef noodle there anymore lol.

The spiked bbt is a nice novel idea, the prices are pretty good for adding shots.

Last visit service was non-existent.
We were basically serving ourselves. Around 9pm, only a couple tables were seated. Stood at the door for few min... nobody came, had to seat ourselves, 5min past, nobody even came within eye contact of our table. We had to grab our own menus. The guy shows up, sighs like he hates his life, takes our orders. We had to go get our own eating utensils lol. That was like literally the only time I saw him the entire meal. Another guy brought out our food and we had to walk up to the counter to get the bill and pay.

3/10, not sure why this place looks busy later at night when I drive by. Lots of recreational sports "teams" seem to congregate there.
