Le Crocodile
Lobster Bisque: Flavour was good, but lacked any texture, and lobster meat. Very disappointing compared to Pear Tree's Lobster Cappuccino. 7/10
Shaved Black Truffle Pasta: Bland. Didnt like it at all. $30 was not worth it at all. 4/10
Seared Cariboo Tenderloin. Pinot Noir Jus. Sweet Peas Couscous. Really tender and mildly gamey. I wish it was more gamey though, as I feel like the wild gamey flavours sets it apart from other meats that could be had regularly. Not mind blowing but really solid dish. 9/10
Service was garbage as usual. Not sure why I insist on tipping a cent more than 10% each time despite subpar service. Quote:

Chosun, Korean on Kingway (east of Tyne). Pretty decent, really busy, reservation is your friend. Ordered some off the menu and had some bbq, seafood pancake, bibimbap. Food was good, one of the better seafood pancakes that I've tasted, service is what it is, lots of good side dishes. 8.5/10

went to Homer St Cafe
started with the cornmeal prawns
got their Lamb special with couscous and Ling Cod Special
the beurre blanc was spectacular for the ling cod, but i think everything was missing a pinch of salt.
finished with the dessert.
the fritter was ok but the chocolate mousse was the perfect sweetness
Service was good, cute blonde waitress knew how to do a good job.
8.5/10

Since this place has not been reviewed on RS yet. Captain's Boil
Ordered the following:
Clams
Mussels
Sausages
Shrimps
Crawfish
Potatoes
Corn
All with the mild spicy sauce. Sausages we're way too salty for my taste.
Crawfish were meh, I enjoyed the mussels and clams more.
This was my first time experience with this sort of dining.
But at $28 per person (a drink each + tips included) X 4. It's not bad.
7/10

My friends like Captain's more.

I had horrific service the one and only time I ate at le crocodile and that was almost 10 years ago.. said I wouldn't return then but this thread had made it enticing again.
Maybe I'll stick with my original hunch.

Maybe I'll stick with my original hunch. | Go for the food, not the service. I havent yet found an appetizer I have enjoyed there but the main courses are awesome and solid.

^ wish I could.. I've been in customer service all my career so sub par service really gets to me when I'm spending decent coin in a nice establishment. It's supposed to be part of the experience IMO.

Yep. I'm not sitting down for the best meal and paying top dollar for it if I won't be treated well.

went to faebrew in richmond today to try their coffee.
they only serve pour overs there.
my cup cost 15 dollars.
it was a fantastic cup of coffee and no i'm not going to argue whether a cup of coffee is worth 15.
the amount of effort he puts into each cup and the idea of why he's running the shop is admirable. He asks about your flavor preferences and how you're feeling right now and tries to tailor a cup of coffee for you. All he wants is everyone to be happy.
pourover is not my thing more of an espresso person, but probably the best pour over i've had. so 7.5/10
the service there is 12/10, it's like going to talk with an old friend.
for me it's like spending 15 dollars for 2-3 hours of entertainment. the coffee is there to keep you warm and lips moist.
i will be back.

I've only been to Le Croc once so can't comment on consistency but the 1 time I went the service was pretty spot on. Might have been different (better?) because my wife bumped into old classmate working there and they chatted a bit however she wasn't our server.
I have been to Crab Pot a few times in Washington. I plan to try Captain's Boil in the next couple weeks. I'm not sure but wasn't the previous restaurant of that location also a Crawfish Boil place? I went before they changed names, it was super overpriced and oily. Can't remember the name of it.

^not a fan of crab pot or any of those places. you get a load of mixed seafood dumped on your table and by the time you're halfway done everything is cold and gross.
i went to anh and chi yesterday and it was pretty good stuff. pricey compared to traditional vietnamese places but the food is excellent. awesome spring rolls, and i also enjoyed their noodle dishes (om bowl). as i said it's sort of pricey just think of it as slightly modernized viet food. good place for a lunch date.

three times in the last 2 years to Croc and service was excellent all 3.. 2 times i was with a guy who knows the Som so that helps, but the other time went with a bunch of people who are kinda picky/ignorant to da food scene and they were very helpful and polite then as well.
Maybe just bad nights

Speaking of upscale places, I'd like some recommendations of restaurants and/or dishes for my upcoming birthday dinner.
A few I am thinking of, having looked at the latest menus, are Royal Dinette, Bauhaus tasting menu, La Quercia, Farmer's Apprentice.

Went to Hy's the other day.. it was good but I have to say, the steak I had at Gothams was better. I will add that we had the porterhouse at Gothams and the Chateaubriand at Hy's so not comparing apples to apples with the cut, but it was seasoned better at Gothams.
Guess I'll have to try Hy's porterhouse next time because Costco coupons ftw

A&W, 2 mozza burgerse for $8 coupon
worth it for the coupon
orange sauce reminded me of big mac but 10000x better....
9/10
regular price items are expensive and not worth it imo, always go with a coupon
edit: ate the two burgers in 2 minutes .... feels like shit right now and want to puke (was too hungry)
would go again

A few I am thinking of, having looked at the latest menus, are Royal Dinette, Bauhaus tasting menu, La Quercia, Farmer's Apprentice. | I'm not sure if it was because it was Valentine's day where things got too busy and affected the quality/service, but Bauhaus wasn't very mindblowing.
The food fell very flat, not saying that it wasn't good, but it was more like a "that's it?". They put a lot of effort on the plating and using extravagant ingredients, but it was like, "so what?". Portions are typical fine-dining tiny portions 2 bite sizes. I would definitely order at least 6-8 plates/person to be full if I were to be ordering off the menu. I definitely don't think the 5 plates for the set menu is enough but I guess this varies from person to person. I personally don't think it commanded the price that I pay but take it with a grain of salt as:
1) It was Valentine's set menu
2) I'm not used to paying that much for Vancouver food so that may skew my opinion on price.

$80 for 2 $50 gift cards for Hy's
Bao Bei 9/10
No real complains except for a tad too much cumin on the shao bing. Shao bing was the favourite dish of the night. Had the man tou, pork belly and beef tartare which were all great.
Server took the time to explained the specials but basically disappeared after that for the whole night.
