This was a few weeks ago but still worth mentioning. Bonafide BBQ is in the new Brentwood food court but don't mistake it for junky food court Chinese BBQ. It not as good as HK BBQ Master but it's the best substitute I've had in Burnaby/Vancouver (I thought it was better than Chinatown BBQ) - it's 80-90% as good and the prices are about the same as BBQ Master.

2 nights of Row Fourteen ... pinch me. Tonight is 2nd night | Super interested in trying this place. How many courses is the meal normally? From the website it looks like ordering everything a la carte would be cheaper.
Does anything else make this package more special?

Does anything else make this package more special? | So you get suite for 2 nights, 2 evenings of 7 course meal for 2 (with a flight of 4 ciders per person), a tour of the farm (interesting), a bottle of craft cider to take home, $50 gift certificate to use at the marketplace for coffee/pastries or whatever, and this includes all taxes.

Tonight is the night ..
Vancouver’s First Michelin-Starred Restaurants Will Be Announced October 27 https://www.vanmag.com/taste/food-ne...ed-october-27/
Yes, it's a bit pretentious and all, but interesting. Winners will automatically jack up their prices by like 25-50% making it totally unaffordable for the common person (like >$250 pp). Honestly, if there is a restaurant that you enjoy going to, who needs these people to give their stamp of approval!

Honestly doubt most “normal” people have been going to the ones that will be named anyways, not that it justifies any sort of increase.

I have conflicting feelings about these restaurant awards. On one hand, it's great that restaurants get publicity and recognition for serving good food, but sometimes it's at the expense of price, atmosphere, and food quality from increased production.
Anyhow, still curious to know what's going to be starred in Vancouver.

My guesses are
Published
Oca
La Quercia (if they are still as good as the last time I was there, which was long ago)
St Lawrence
As usual there will be tons of places that deserve it and don't get it, and tons of places that don't deserve it and get it.
If fucking hawksworth gets it you know the whole goddamn thing is a joke.

I got on the recommended list. That’s rad.
Hawksworth totally deserves to be on that list too, just not a star to be clear.

I'm surprised QJD got a star (although I haven't been to the Vancouver one which could be better), the one in Markham is very meh. Although not eligible for the Toronto list, I doubt it would have gotten any mention if it was eligible.

Not surprised to see Published on the list, though my most recent visit in July felt lackluster compared to the few times I went pre-COVID. Still miss their duck wings |

Add 2 to my Michelin guide with Kissa Tanto and St.Lawrence lol
Honestly probably agree Westopher that when it comes to plating and the actual food the list is probably pretty accurate compared to just including Hawksworth for a spot for mainlanders to snap IG photos

My immediate thought was that 8 restaurants seemed like a lot for such a small city.. I have no idea what I’m talking about but it just seems like the club can’t be that exclusive.

Well looks like I've been to 3/8 of the one-starred places already. 7/12 of the Bib Gourmands. 23/40 Recommended. Some questionable choices on all of them, especially the latter list.
Went to a 1* in France for the first time this month and it blows any of the 1* in Vancouver out of the water (at least the 3 I've visited). People on the comments/reddit are complaining each country has its own "standards". Europe seems to be the domain haute cuisine only, whereas in Asia you get places like a Chicken Rice Stand in Singapore getting a 1*.

Out of all the restaurants on the list that won a star, are any of them not the foofoo-style 2 pieces of lettuce with reduction smeared on a corner of the plate kind of spot?
My GF goes to these types of places all the time with her friends, but I prefer something more hearty and substantial. Say Mercy is fantastic for example, but didn't get a star.
Any recommendations?

St.Lawrence was pretty killer also the McKenzie room is pretty good just off the top of my head
In regards to your second comment I gave a buddy who’s kinda snobby in terms of wine and dining etc. and he was like “yea great..all the one stars are places in sitting next to some blue haired fuck with a bone through their nose, great”
Vancouver in general is so casual in everything they do, I don’t see the city ever supporting a proper 2 or 3 star.
As CB said, the one and two stars I’ve been to in Europe are so far ahead of the dining in Vancouver. I went to Field in Prague which is 1 star “farm to table” type place without playing it up like North America loves to. The 5-6 course lunch with a wine pairing was like $120 each with 4 wines. The understated “fanciness” of that place really doesn’t happen in Vancouver imo
It’s either this try hard “casual” dining or over the top BS that doesn’t pay off

^I was talking about this with a friend and we came to a similar conclusion as well - the starred places here feel hollow compared to those we tried in New York, LA, and Hong Kong. It feels like a certain level of polish is missing, but I'm hopeful Vancouver will get there eventually.

What is this Recommended list all about? Advertising space? Neptune and New Mandarin aren't even close to being good and Botanist can go suck a big one.
The food at AnnaLena was good when I went a few years back but no joke we waited 90 minutes for the entrées... supposedly there was a dispute in the kitchen.

Any recommendations? | These type of places you almost always need to order the multi-course tasting menu. Sure you'll get a baby carrot smeared with foam as an entire dish but you'll get 8 or 9 other dishes after that and you'll be full.
That being said the ones I've tried: Anna Lena, Burdock, and St. Lawrence are not like that. At least when I went.

Yeah we paid to be on the list. It’s funny how worked up people that don’t know fuck all about the restaurant industry get about their personal tastes and experiences being more important than everyone else’s. I don’t come to your insurance sales awards and be like “seriously that fuckin idiot got it? His paperwork was so disorganized when I looked at his desk behind the counter”
