Any reasonable Omasake ... by reasonable, I mean like < $120/pp ... sorry but cannot handle the real high end ones like > $140 or more pp ... I'm springing for 4 people, not ballers like some of you.
For fun, best recommend if $$ was not an object ...
What I'm really asking, Best recommend for value and quality ...

Matsuzushi in Port Moody
$40 omakase
Hit and miss recently according to reviews but I went for the first time last month at this 'new' location and it didn't disappoint. They used to have a stall inside the JDM market on North Rd beside Insadong.
The chef's humor might not be for you but my wife and I got along with him just fine. YMMV

If anyone has not been to Sushi by Yuji lately, his omakase is similar to the one jing posted. I don't recall the cost but it's a bit more than $40 but most of the fish he will use in the omakase are ones flown in fresh from Japan.

What I'm really asking, Best recommend for value and quality ... | I don't think people replying to you know what Omakase means. Are you looking for when the sushi chef chooses a bunch of items to serve you, makes it in front of you, and then serves it to you one by one?
If so, you're going to be paying upwards of $150 to $500(!) after tip and taxes these days. I went a couple years back and it was $120 to Sushi Bar Maumi at it's old location on Davie St. Now it's on Robson St in bigger diggs. Can attest to the quality, the Sushi was top notch. Website says it's $135 before taxes.
Not the best place to go if you're rabidly hungry, but you can always order more for $$$.

This past year I went to https://www.tekkaba.ca/
but it's not really "true" Japanese Sushi Omakase as it has some Korean fusion elements involved (it's run by Koreans). It's still good, but not as refined and formal "stuffy" feeling. The chef actually talks to you and jokes about his food. But he still makes things one by one and serves it up Omakase style.
ANyways it's only $78 and $118 for the "premium"

Aburi market is my lifeline. It's not cheap per se, but the quality to price is exceptional. Spend $70 and you are definitely getting something that would be $100-120 at a restaurant.

The method in which the food is delivered to you, whether all together on a single serving or individually per item at a bar in front of you has no bearing if it's omakase or not is. e.g. you can sit at the bar and order a la carte where the chefs preparing them hand you each course directly and it wouldn't be omakase.
If he's looking for an Omakase for under $120 per head in Vancouver, he's not gonna get the individual service like you are describing.

I mean technically, yeah that's true but in - sorry I hate to use this term - ugh "foodie circles", Omakase has come to mean individual serving of nigiri sushi and other small dishes in the manner I've described.
I've never seen a sashimi platter described as "omakase" but obviously there's no overarching body regulating that word like "Champagne" or "Feta Cheese". And that platter seems to have all the fish you'd normally get in sashimi platters, so I can't really see how it's a "chef's choice" if everything is on it.
Not disparaging your dining choices at all, your platter looks delicious, but let's call a spade a spade, it's a (premium?) sashimi platter.

I will side with CivicBlues on this one.
Sushi by Yuji used to serve an omakase prepared individually'ish. Fast forward post COVID, I went back, and to my surprise, it was just a platter of nigiri sushi for the one fixed price in which I felt no value came from it other than he reserves the fish flown in from Japan, which you can also get a la carte. I felt a diminished value as a result and only order a la carte now.

There's only bar seating for 3 or 4 people at Matsuzushi so semantics aside, that is why the nigiri is served together all at once. The chef's wife will appreciate not having to walk back and forth 11 more times than needed given her age.

yah, thanks everyone. Sorry that I didn't clarify but I thought everyone knew what omakase was. I did see some omakase on the menu of some of the recommends and yes, looking for that higher end experience where the sushi chef talks to you, explains to you, makes you a friend for the night, then gives you the 10 little wee pieces of the freshest sushi of the day. I know ... if you want a decent one, it is in the upper range of $150, there are some value ones Yoshida Sushi on Victoria is like $60-70 ... but you might get what you pay. Was hoping to find that balance of value and decent quality around $120 ish.

Took my kids to Tojo’s the other week. First time for all of us. We were in Van and agreed we should try the OG cali roll, despite being over cali rolls in general. The food was quite good. The service was excellent.
They had several omakase menus ranging from $120-$330+. Tojo was there and I was thinking it might be cool to experience that for the first time with a local legend. Obviously wouldn’t be doing that for value, but for the experience.

Apparently Long's Noodle at Admiralty Center will be closing down on Monday, so this coming Sunday will be its last day. So no more blasphemous Cantonese style XLB for Badhobz, but I will miss it dearly.
No idea on why it is closing, since business should be strong.

Yoshida Sushi on Victoria ... 8/10. Had the omakase 'lite', 12 pieces of daily fresh nigiri, served all at once so none of this 10 mins in between making the meal last 1.5 hrs. $50/pp. Very fresh, mom and pop ambience, not a place to go for a special occasion but a place to go for value quality sushi.
Maenum on 4th ... 9/10. It's a Michelin recommend, really good, next level Thai food. You can do the $88/pp tasting set menu (with some choices) or order a la carte. Ordered off the menu, a la carte and it turned out to be like 1/2 of that per person, ~$45/pp, reasonable price for this level. Some creative dishes and some traditional ones. Nice place for an occasion.

Lol this has become a thing now what I was describing earlier in the thread, bromakase, where the value of the theatrics of omakase; about the bar seating and status is more than the original intent and meaning behind the omakase experience which is the chef's choice of the best fish and selection of the day.
New York Times skewers 'bromakase' culture in Austin that Joe Rogan helped launch https://www.statesman.com/story/ente...d/73802609007/

Spent a fantastic weekend in Keremeos & Cawston to try Row Fourteen. With the poor weather lately we lucked out that it was more shoulder season so things were not too busy at all.
Loved the vibe there with the scenic valley, rolling vineyards, country roads. Reminded me of the vibes of the Sancerre region in France that I had visited years ago.
Some wineries with amazing views and great wine.
Row Fourteen was fantastic, although the wine pairing wasn't really a pairing but just a flight of whatever they had by the glass. Food itself was very well executed. I regret not going for the vegetarian harvest mral since they had this morel & English peas pasta dish as their main course, whereas the standard harvest Dinner had a steak which although done well was nothing too unique.
And in general the food there at the places i did visit were really good. Including the pizza/donair shop in Keremeos that has a gigantic 12" long 5" girth signature subs for $15 that were amazing and was enough for multiple meals.
Highly recommended for a low key getaway outside of the hubbub of Kelowna/naramata.
