We're debating semantics if you get basic and optional with ICBC, yet if you do, you're silly, cause ICBC optional was higher than every private insurer I got a quote from.

Private insurers don't use this same claims rated scale. Get a 3 quotes for optional coverage from 3 different companies, I guarantee you they'll be different.

Calculate the optional by adding the Higher TPL + Collision + Comprehensive and Roadstar or Roadside Plus coverages gives you the optional.

You can only go private with the optional coverages.

Its the damn % +/- system ICBC uses. ICBC has a max +% (+40%?), which means even the worst drivers can get insurance. In Ontario there is no max, if you're a bad driver they'll quote you $10K+ to convince you not to drive and get bad drivers off the road.
when i moved from ontario, my insurance payment in BC went down. that is even after 20% discount in ontraio (company benefits from TD insurance) Did you show icbc ur driver abstract from Ontario showing u have clean driving record? (ie. no tickets etc?)

its no fault insurace. so if u do get hit, ur insurace goes up regardless.

TRUST ME! i use to live in ontario, BC's public insurace system is 10x times better than private insurance in ONT.

I was paying $1300 in Ontario for full coverage (15% discount for combined policy)
I'm now paying $1200 for just basic and liability (6 years clean, 30% discount)

The ony way you're paying less out here is if you were a bad driver in Ontario. Even at $1300/yr in Ontario I was paying more than I should have cause I had an accident 6 years ago. I should have been < $1000.

You're wrong: No fault means your car gets fixed by your own insurance company. Fault is still assigned and premiums increase accordingly.

Insurance companies don't increase premiums unless you are found to be at fault. If you're telling the truth, he should have been 0% at fault in all 3 incidents, if they are not covering him, something is missing from your story.

For bad drivers it is.
- If you're a bad driver in Ontario you will get a super high quote for insurance or just denied.
- In BC you cannot be denied basic, no matter how bad a driver you are.

BC's system rewards bad drivers and punishes good drivers cause this is the left-coast, where driving is a social right, not a privilege.

Ontario's system rewards good drivers (my mother/father pay $500/yr insurance, full coverage, on 3 vehicles and a boat!) and punishes bad drivers with sky-high premiums. Some good drivers do get caught in the system and punished unfairly (my rates doubled with only 1 at-fault accident, here they'd only go up 25%).

.
all i have to say is go to wikipedia and read the full discription on no-fault insurance. (full) ull know what i mean, when i say 'even if ur not at fault, ur insurnace goes up'

as i said, i had a clean record in ont, and i was able to show that, therefore got proper discount in BC, and insurance was less than toronto. you know that factors like where u live in the city does effect ur insurance? I guess you already didn't have a clean record in ONT. (as per ur own admission) so ur insurance here was not cheap.

how are you saying that BC rewards bad drivers... when just above u can see examples of people who are paying through the nose for causing "at fault" accident?

Read the claims rates scale, it goes up in different increments depending on your current discount.

I don't need to go to Wikipedia, I've had a 100% at-fault accident and a 0% at-fault accident. I've dealt with the system and am telling you that you are WRONG.

There might be a reason your username is "tool".

How about you post what you were paying? I did, its hard to argue with numbers. There are only a handful of people on here reporting that they pay < $1300 for full coverage.

Were you paying > $1300 in Toronto? If you were, with a clean record, you should have shopped around cause you were getting screwed. I drive a 2dr car classified as a sports car with declared mods, and still only paid $1300 with full coverage.

Since you know insurance so well, you'd know that Ontario insurance essentially only goes back 6 years, thus the 6 "star" rating on your insurance. I had just gotten my 6 star rating back before I moved, so my insurance was cheap in Ontario - cause like I said, Ontario rewards good drivers.

Reread my example, you obviously did not understand it.

I pay 1300 for the year...i just renewed last week

1994 civic
full coverage, 300 deductible and 3 mil liability
43% discount
10 year driver discount as well

i guess im lucky sorta, but still seems odd that insurance per year costs more than the value of my car.

On a side note, does anyone know if insuring a second car would be cheaper? Any help would be great. Im thinking of getting a summer car.

The insurance on the second car will likely to follow your current discount on your current vehicle, unless you have had at faults claims in the past that didn't affect you in the past.
