it's like walking into an old growth forest. but man made.

i think dubai should be on your number one list in the future since they have these proposed modern crazy skycrapers going on.

look at this website, ULIC:

hope youll enjoy it the way i did...oh man...hopefully they will build all these skycrapers. for sure...dubai will be one of the wonders of the world.

i wouldn't say dubai is the place to go for a concrete jungle type of experience. hong kong and tokyo are definitely the top on the list. while dubai is amazing, it is still a young city comparatively, so if you love modern architecture, dubai is great, but concrete jungle, i'd say no.

besides manhattan, there really aren't that much skyscrapers outside of it. the other 4 boroughs are mostly residential and pretty ghetto for the most part. but honestly, unless you know the city well and can avoid wasting time, there isn't a lot outside of manhattan worth seeing. even though they have subways, it can take 20-40 minutes to take a train out the 4 surrounding boroughs.

you might want to consider going to six flags great adventures in jersey. it's about 1-2 hrs drive out of manhattan i believe.

Or even to Atlantic City to gamble a bit.
Also, NJ has no sales tax on clothing (well, at least it was this was the last time I was out there) if you want to do some shopping for clothing.

woodbury commons is an outlet mall not too far and there are many tour busses that drive out there. same goes for atlantic city.. but if you're expecting an east coast vegas, you're out of luck.. it's pretty ghetto unless you just wanna gamble in casinos that are probably a bit nicer than the ones we have here.

No. I am talking about in the future! Right now...Dubai is still a progressing city for modern architecture. Read my quote again. ;);)

I would not say HongKong skycrapers since the architecture is just a plain, old, same skycraper except for propably less than 5 skycrapers I can remember. HongKong will be like Singapore except it is cleaner. Oh wait...I think, Singapore has pretty, decent, daring skycrapers architecture unlike HongKong.

yayabonks 12-30-2008 12:55 PM

it really depends what you're looking for. hong kong looks great at night. but aside from IFC and bank of china building there aren't too many interesting architectural buildings. they just look flashy at night.

i dont' remember singapore having many skyscrapers last year when i was there. but i wouldn't go there for that anyway.

What can you see in Dubai that you can't see at Lamborghini of Las Vegas or the annual Concourse Italiano event in Monterey California?

AppleSugary 01-02-2009 12:57 AM

I cant wait when DUBAI will open the DYnamic Tower in 2010
It is the first moving building in the world. Like each level is moving. that's crazy as of now! If you know what I mean?

LOL thats pretty fucking trippy. I've seen a house where each floor moves on the HGTV channel but this is just crazy.

teaoh 01-03-2009 11:37 AM

it looks like each floor is moving so is it still possible for an elevator? And even if it is possible how are people going to get off of the elevator since the floor is always moving

There's likely a center column that stays motionless while the rest of the building rotates. It's like the rotating restaurant in Vancouver, only slightly more complex.

I'm not planning to do much shopping, but I do intend to see most attractions. How long should I plan my trip for? Is 1 week enough to see most attractions? If I do plan on visiting nearby cities like Boston, Washington, Philly, etc, How many more days should I extend my trip? I know NY is a very expensive city, so approximately, how much money should I bring to be on the "safe" side?

By the way, this is a budget trip!

Thanks!

I've got family in NYC, so I visit it every few years. DT is definitely very busy, but I find it far more friendly than Vancouver. The thing about money, however, is that you can survive on basically whatever budget you plan for yourself. When eating out, food can be no more expensive than what you'd find at your typical Burnaby or Vancouver restaurant. It's only when you get the desire to start visiting the fancier restaurants in town that you'll find your wallet emptying itself that much quicker. But like I said, whatever you'd pay for food here is on par with what you can buy there. Plus there are plenty of street vendors with some very good food. If you really want to stretch your budget, you can survive on $200cdn for a week, though I really wouldn't recommend it.

One week is definitely long enough to see most of the major attractions (Ellis Island, Central Park, Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, FAO Schwartz -- if they're even still in business lol, 5th Avenue, etc). As for visiting surrounding cities, Boston is pretty boring and Philly isn't much better. Washington, DC is definitely the one place you should check out while in that area. There are plenty of sights to see apart from typical political buildings. I spent hours in the Smithsonian Museum while in DC.

If possible, try to head North-East and visit Cape Cod as well. It's a very pretty area with plenty of places to relax and simply take in the sound of the ocean.

Let's keep this thread on topic about NYC, not Dubai, Winnipeg, or fuck, for all I care, Berlin.

Yeah?
Okay?
Cool.

:)

there's a cheap bus that goes from chinatown to DC, if you're interested in heading there. i don't know the details - but i heard it's pretty cheap. when i visited my buddy, we drove to DC from fort lee - but i remember that the tolls raped us there and back.
