besides manhattan, there really aren't that much skyscrapers outside of it. the other 4 boroughs are mostly residential and pretty ghetto for the most part. but honestly, unless you know the city well and can avoid wasting time, there isn't a lot outside of manhattan worth seeing. even though they have subways, it can take 20-40 minutes to take a train out the 4 surrounding boroughs.
you might want to consider going to six flags great adventures in jersey. it's about 1-2 hrs drive out of manhattan i believe.

Also, NJ has no sales tax on clothing (well, at least it was this was the last time I was out there) if you want to do some shopping for clothing.

I would not say HongKong skycrapers since the architecture is just a plain, old, same skycraper except for propably less than 5 skycrapers I can remember. HongKong will be like Singapore except it is cleaner. Oh wait...I think, Singapore has pretty, decent, daring skycrapers architecture unlike HongKong.

it really depends what you're looking for. hong kong looks great at night. but aside from IFC and bank of china building there aren't too many interesting architectural buildings. they just look flashy at night.
i dont' remember singapore having many skyscrapers last year when i was there. but i wouldn't go there for that anyway.

What can you see in Dubai that you can't see at Lamborghini of Las Vegas or the annual Concourse Italiano event in Monterey California?

it looks like each floor is moving so is it still possible for an elevator? And even if it is possible how are people going to get off of the elevator since the floor is always moving

It's like the rotating restaurant in Vancouver, only slightly more complex.

I know NY is a very expensive city, so approximately, how much money should I bring to be on the "safe" side?
By the way, this is a budget trip!
Thanks! |
I've got family in NYC, so I visit it every few years. DT is definitely very busy, but I find it far more friendly than Vancouver. The thing about money, however, is that you can survive on basically whatever budget you plan for yourself. When eating out, food can be no more expensive than what you'd find at your typical Burnaby or Vancouver restaurant. It's only when you get the desire to start visiting the fancier restaurants in town that you'll find your wallet emptying itself that much quicker. But like I said, whatever you'd pay for food here is on par with what you can buy there. Plus there are plenty of street vendors with some very good food. If you really want to stretch your budget, you can survive on $200cdn for a week, though I really wouldn't recommend it.
One week is definitely long enough to see most of the major attractions (Ellis Island, Central Park, Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, FAO Schwartz -- if they're even still in business lol, 5th Avenue, etc). As for visiting surrounding cities, Boston is pretty boring and Philly isn't much better. Washington, DC is definitely the one place you should check out while in that area. There are plenty of sights to see apart from typical political buildings. I spent hours in the Smithsonian Museum while in DC.
If possible, try to head North-East and visit Cape Cod as well. It's a very pretty area with plenty of places to relax and simply take in the sound of the ocean.

there's a cheap bus that goes from chinatown to DC, if you're interested in heading there. i don't know the details - but i heard it's pretty cheap. when i visited my buddy, we drove to DC from fort lee - but i remember that the tolls raped us there and back.

has anyone been to the outlet? Worthwhile going? They have some nice brands so it's kinda tempting, however it's more than 1 hr away from the city.
