Are you renting through Craigslist?

And again, I know I said this but check for bed bugs. If there are, peace the fuck out ASAP.

Good call for going with Airbnb. It's pretty safe for the most part and you're protected.

hey just a quick question,
has anyone been to the outlets in NY and was it worth it, i never went last time.
and also weird question, since i am there for quite some time, has anyone every like ordered something of a website and get it to shipped to were they were staying, reason is i am going to order some stuff so i can save on shipping and duty ( rather then getting it shipped to b.c) so i would get it then send it back to b.c with usps or something like that

How is the weather in New York in December? Will it be snowing all the time around Christmas time? Or will the weather still be good enough to travel and sightsee?

It will most likely snow and it gets very cold. The days will be shorter so there will be less time for you to do your rounds as a tourist.

Ive been here:
http://www.premiumoutlets.com/outlets/outlet.asp?id=7

You can catch a shuttle bus to there from Port Authority but keep in mind it will take most of your day (morning to evening). Lots of stores and good deals, but depends on what youre looking. I find the regular shops and department stores always have good sales anyways.

I've never shipped anything back, i just pack it back with me. I've gotten things shipped to friends there and got them to mail it back to me and never had to pay duty.

I'm considering going on a vacation to NYC but have no idea where to start.

What is an ideal time frame to go to NY for? I'd like to see all the tourist attractions/shop/eat. Would 1 week be too long?

Also, how much $$ should I expect to bring/spend for, say, a week long trip?

Personally, I would not recommend going now. It's freezing cold and the days are shorter. I felt that 1 week was too much but that's just me. Three or four days would have been the very most for me.

Go during the Spring or Summer, say late-March/April onwards when the weather is nicer. Keep in mind events such as sporting events, fashion weeks, film festivals etc. can easily increase your expenses (i.e. hotels/flights etc.) Depending on what kind of food you're planning to live off of, I would say a nominal budget of $60 per day can land you some handsome lunch and dinner options. You can easily get by with much less however.

i am here till the 10th so more or less 3 weeks, only way i could afford it was staying at a apartment witch is pretty sick actually, i got kitchen laundry blah blah blah, so i just go shopping at whole foods in the morning, i do eat out still cause i love the food , it is pricey and its not, staying in a hotel will kill u unless u r going for 4-5 days

Would like some tips for New York.

1) I want to visit all the main tourist attractions, would I have to pay for admission individually or is there a cheaper alternative like buying a package deal or something? I found something called a New York pass online, is that worth it?
2) Where's the best place to get broadway shows info and tickets?
3) Where's the best place to get Knicks/Rangers tickets?
4) Where's the best place to party at night?
5) Is it worth it to travel to DC/Boston if I am only in NY for 4 days? It takes 4 hours each way on a bus. Has anyone done this before?

Going on a quick trip to New York for 4 days and 3 nights @ The Rosovelt Hotel. Really short amount of time to be there but we and the girlfriend will use the best of our time if possible.

Thinking about visiting the Statue of Liberty, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Central park, and checking out the streets of Time Square.

Any experience and/or difficulties anyone had when traveling to and from location to location in NY?

Always Always Always check the New York transit system's websites to see if there are any service interruptions to/from the airports.

Better prepared than not.

I ended up in the Bronx the first time I went there and I arrived at 10:30pm. It was scary as fuck.

Otherwise, pay attention to the subway trains and where they're going. Take an express - you're GG'd.

Any particular areas we should stay out of especially late at night?

I went August of 2010. A lot of exploring on foot around 9-10pm with 2 or 3 of my buddies around Manhattan. Seemed alright, we walked from the meatpacking district to the brooklyn bridge (hell of a walk) and the walk was pretty safe. 2-3 shady guys but they don't really bother you unless you're by yourself or making a lot of noise and commotion.

All in All, NYC wasn't as close to "violent" as an average Canadian thinks. As long as you have common sense to not stare at someone shady etc. The borough of Manhattan is pretty safe.

And if you're going to stick to public transit? MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHERE THE TRAINS ARE GOING.

Most of Manhattan is pretty safe.

I find riding the sky train here at night scarier then the subway there.

Really eh? Yeah I guess just all that media and movies of people getting stabbed, mugged, etc gave me the wrong impression.

Me and the GF are planning to spend half our day hanging out at central park. Anything special in particular at Central Park? Maybe some sort of famous food stand?

No, it's really not like that. Those days are over when NY had a real problem with drugs in the 70s and 80s.

Manhattan Island is quite safe on a large scale. Can't speak for the other boroughs of NY, though.

central park is huge. i thought a cool part of it was an area called the mall.

you might want to combine it with a few hours at the MET or if you don't mind spending $15 to 20 on a cocktail you can go the the lobby bar at the mandarin oriental. the lobby bar is on on the 30ish floor and has an awesome view of the park.

in terms of food, buy it outside and bring it in.

Whats everyone using for flights these days to NYC? I find it surprising the lack of direct flight options.

Theres:
AC with 1 connection to LGA, which is a really crappy airport.
Continental direct to Newark, NJ
Cathay direct to JFK, but its a red eye so I land at 7am lol.

Right now leaning towards Cathay cause of their service and its direct.

then return flight was AC direct Newark to YVR ~450, late august 2010

I've always taken cathay to JFK, I like it because I get into the city at around 830, and then I have the full day to go out!
