It has an LA number if that matters to you and I've been using it on and off in LA with the $3/day package.

I am doing a road trip to Portland for a week later in summer, if so may take you up on that offer.

| Yes. It's nationwide. Used it in Blaine/Bellingham, Seattle, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Orange County and San Diego.
I used it mainly for data (90% of the time) and SMS to US numbers. SMS to Canada is an additional cost, just an FYI (you can get a daily plan.)

When I was outside though it worked fine, but more often then not I would lose signal when I stepped inside most buildings in NYC. This I found frustrating compared to AT&T.
I was using my Rogers S3 on Roam which apparently uses T-Mobile network.

2G will be okay for the most part as long as you aren't streaming. Granted, like Hachi Six's experience, it is noticably slow since we're used to 3G/4G speeds. If you use applications like Google Maps or whatever, just give it a bit more time to load and whatnot. T-Mobile's indoor signal penetration is terrible compared to AT&T. In Portland, you should be okay for the most part (you dirty hipster.)

5-6 days should be enough if you're not heading to other nearby cities.
Hotels will rape you.

I've stayed in Secaucus and Rutherford before (in NJ) About 30-40 min bus ride to the Port Authority and it's a bit cheaper than staying in Manhattan. I'm not sure if there's any hotels in Hoboken near the ferry but that's another option as well if you don't mind staying outside of Manhattan. Plus clothing and shoes are tax free in NJ.
I've stayed at the New Yorker last time I was in Manhattan. It was about $400/night for the 5 of us. Not cheap but was super convenient. It fit 5 of us comfortably if that's something you're looking for.

I looked into this too thinking I would save money, but I didn't want to run the risk of nosy neighbours calling bylaw officials and kicking me out.
With that said, if you're not fussy, you can find 2-star hotels in Manhattan for about $100/night. Posted via RS Mobile |

TRD604 - Check out Z Hotel on the other side of the Queensboro Bridge, because that's where I stayed when I went last November. Ended up being around $700 for 4 nights. $700 would've gotten me 2 nights in Manhattan lol
