I dont think that's what AGPS means. AGPS means the cellular signal (tower location information) to assist the GPS signal to get your GPS fix faster. The provider has to support this feature and I don't think Rogers is doing that on their tower but I could be wrong.

aGPS has nothing to do with where the maps are stored. It's a system of "assisting" the GPS through cel towers, as well as other computational methods of getting more reliable positioning.

All you need for onboard maps is the appropriate software - Garmin, TomTom, and others make versions of their software and maps that can be loaded onto a number of different phones. I have a Windows Mobile version of the Garmin system on my HTC phone.

Whether these are available for iPhone is another matter.

So let's say I use wifi or datacable to download the maps on the iPhone, I would need an actual dataplan submitting data back and fourth to get my actual location on the GPS? Otherwise it will just be like a map back without showing my location etc?

Played with it in the mall just now. Booooring. Also, the hold-the-Home-button-to-see-the-icons-wiggle feature is gone now? I noticed, at least in that demo unit, the edges of the front stick up a bit around the glass? The back is OK, but the first one had a bit more style I think. A plain black slab is boring, and a white one is only marginally better. Sales seem to be crisp, but not outrageous, at least not here at Park Royal.

From what I remember, the iPhone comes with a GPS chip as well as a aGPS chip.

Thusly, if you shut down all data connections, you will not be charged anything while using GPS. All the a-gps will do is help your GPS lock down a signal/satellite faster/stronger and in that process use about 6-7kbs only ONCE (when first acquiring the signal).

from hf i herd that rogers have all of their orders from apple accounted for. they are
in the in the rogers' warehouse out east. so by making them limited qualities
the first few weeks, the hype is kept high. however if u order over phone
u'll be promised to get urs with in 5 business days. only way for them to do this
is that they already have their stock.

Its 6pm right now and I was just walking by Wireless Wave at Metrotown and they still had alot in stock....so yeah..i dont see how it is actually selling well...

yah i had a feeling it wouldn't sell as well as eveyrone thought.. the outrageoulsy expensive 3g plans is probably one of the biggest deal-breakers.. until contract-free 3g iphones come out, i doubt alot of ppl will be buying them.

Rogers is smart as they locked customers for 3 years. Just to let all of you know that there is a wireless spectrum auction going on, so there might be a new wireless provider next year. If the new company offers much much cheaper rate, you can only complain because you locked into Roger's contract.

just checked out with fido flagship store in Surrey. They still have it. It's ok to use HUP with fido dollar, but u must sign another 3 years with data plan on top. oh well, guess I will skip 2nd gen of iphone too. :p

one of the reasons why there were still many stock in town is that fact that NOTHING could be activated today through Rogers and Fido. Where i was, stock was all gone AFTEr the system started to slowly come back, which was almost never...

the fact of the matter is, most people did not understand the stress throughout the whole day with the system down. People wanted it, stores couldnt deliver even though there was stock due to the fact that it was close to impossible trying to get a phone activated.

in my 7 years of cell phone experience, i have never had a miserable day as today, constantly being bitched at by many, some offering bribes, people who just stood there EYEING you down making sure u are CONSTANTLY trying to access salescentral when we all know that it wouldnt come back up so soon.

Give some stores a call tomorrow as there will be some stock left, but its only because of the hell caused by the system breakdown
