As for wifi, you can still use it even if you disabled EDGE.

if i'm not on a data plan is there any risk of being charged for any background services on the iphone 3g using data network without me knowing?
fido rep in richmond explained that iphone 3g constantly has a data connection with an apple server and may receive updates in the background resulting in data charge. i always thought data network is only used if i opened safari and surfed...
any one able to confirm this? thanks!

Can you delete the APN info in the EDGE setting on 3G's?? I've asked Fido to block my internet access and I've deleted the APN info on my 1st gen iPhone and I've never been charged for data.

Why dont you try calling the Rogers Call Center. I'd just get it through the call center just because they won't force you to get the stupid 3G plan if you dont want it :P

It's largely useless, though, without either a data connection for Google Earth or something similar, or commercial GPS software like TomTom or Garmin. There are other freeware apps for Windows Mobile devices that will do basic things like tell your position, and probably something similar for the iPhone, but anything beyond that will likely cost you one way or another.

| iPhone 3G on Rogers HELP!
I need some answers before I get the Rogers Iphone 3G.
1. My 3 year contract is about to end in July, what is the cheapest I can get an iPhone 3G for if I sign up for another contract? What is the monthly fee?
2. Who qualifies for the Rogers upgrade for the iPhone?
3. Can I just get an iPhone 3G off ebay and add the 6GB/$30 data plan? Can this plan be canceled at any time?
4. Is it hard to find these iPhones in stores now?
5. Can you get the iPhone from the Rogers store without signing a data plan?
I am not in town so your answers will help me a lot. Thanks!

1) 199 for the phone plus whatever contract you want from rogers.. has to be 3 year though and the plan has to be over 30 bucks a month (it's 249 if under 30 bucks a month)
2)You if you haven't had a hardware upgrade in the past year
3)a) I don't know (i think you can get an unlocked one but not sure)
b) you have to get a contract to get the data plan.. you can cancel it anytime for a hefty price
4)I think they've got there second shipment it so I don't know if it's a problem in van.. there are some here though
5)Yes but that's sketchy.. apparently you can call rogers to turn off the "internet" part aka 3g/edge
