Guess there's no way around it, I'll wait till after my final on thursday is over then I'm going to call and get the iPhone, I hope they let me extend my current plan, i have a $20 credit on it, that expires in 5 months, if they let me keep it, I will get the iPhone =)

Hey all, I have a few questions about the 3g iPhone. First, I have never owned any Apple products, not the first gen iPhone and will be receiving my 3g iPhone shortly.

My main goals is to use this iPhone with Fido for now, and when I go to HK/China, eventually use it there. I know there is no SIM unlock yet, but I hope by the time I go, there will be. I am using a windows computer so no mac osx.

So first, when I get the iPhone, do I have to activate it through Fido? Or should I use iTunes? I also heard I can use Jailbreak to activate it? I am not too sure. Is there a Jailbreak for Windows? If so, where can I download it?

Also, I hear there is a new update 2.0.1. If I get my iPhone in 2 weeks, will it come with that already updated or will I still have the 2.0.0 version?

Basically, I want to use this iPhone here and abroad (I know i cant yet, but eventually) and I want to use third party apps. I don't want to do anything that will fuck it up, brick it, or whatever you call it. So when I get my iPhone, what should I do first?

Unlocks will come eventually... But it just takes time.
It really depends if you are going to travel soon.
I am going to Hong Kong soon, and I have another phone to use. But I actually originally wanted to use my iPhone 3G in Hong Kong, but an unlock seems very unlikely before I board the plane.

Question about iTunes and when you guys sync.

My phone hasn't been able to sync since last night.

I try syncing it and it'll just keep saying "Sync in Progress" on my phone and "Syncing "iPhone"" in iTunes.

There are no open windows so I have no idea what to do to fix it :o

I read on http://blog.iphone-dev.org/ that I should NOT update to 2.0.1 because you may not be able to unlock it in the future.

^ That's what they always say. They always find a way to unlock it.
And besides, there are always ways to downgrade anyways!

v2.0 has been known to take forever to sync...
did you mean you left it on since last night?
there are some hacks that you can do to make it so that it doesn't sync everything...
but i dont' know if it works on pc

I managed to get it to sync partially. I removed my music and photos and it synced my contacts fine but now my calendar doesn't sync with Outlook. I have a bunch of appointments on my iPhone so it's a pretty big thing for me. Main reason why I got it was for that :o

[edit] ugh...so it looks like Outlook now has 3 different "Calendars" to choose from

I don't remember this from before. I'd click on the calendar tab in Outlook and it would have all my appointments from both Outlook created and iPhone created entries.

[edit #2] UGH! I just tried re-syncing some music and photos onto my iPhone and it's hanging. Fucking Apple piece of shit...I knew I should have went with a Blackberry.

I think the closest you'll get is if you get the paid version of rainlendar and sync that to outlook/google calendar and then sync the iphone to outlook.

i talked to 4 reps today. my phone died with 15 months left on my contract, and i wanted the iphone. if you have 14 months or less remaining, they'll let you switch over and re-negotiate. i had one month extra, but wanted an iphone now since i have no phone to use. they said its an extra $60 since i have one month left. i tried to have that fee waived since its pretty unreasonable for one fucking month. nobody will budge on that fee, or even throw anything in like credits, features, or accessories. normal cancellation is $20 per month, so i thought $60 was pretty bad.

they suggested i buy a new fido phone w/ my fido dollars, but i told them i didnt want to waste my dollars on a phone i'll use for one month. in the end i got nothing... but i had the option of switching to rogers and canning my contract w/ fido for no charge. still i wanted to stay w/ fido since switching is a hassle.

i did learn one new piece of info though... that fido/rogers will be introducing some sort of new price plan or term on MONDAY, and that i should call back on monday to learn more... so far the CSRs know nothing about the new pricing/terms, so dont bother calling to find out what it is until then.

like I said, the CSR are minimum wage idiots.

yeah i meant a case with an eyelet/strap hole so i can hang lanyards and stuff on to the case

^ lol, so far I've only seen one with a hole in it for the strap ... +kardbox+ uses that kind (first gen) but he didn't buy it locally.

best bet is to check out nightmarket or JP cellular. IIRC they had quite a few iphone cases on sale, but again I went there pre-iphone 3g.

I upgraded my iPhone first gen to firmware 2.0 and have some bones to pick.
The plan I have with fido at the moment allow me to surf up to 12MB worth of data on the network before I am charged for going over. With the firmware I was running (1.1.2) I had the option of entering all network information, so user name: fido, password: fido, and server: www.fido.ca or what ever the stuff was.
With firmware 2.0 I no longer have that option. Is there any way around it, or maybe add some of the 3g data to my plan? Or is this all completely impossible because the iPhone isn't a "authorized fido phone"??

Note mine.... When ever I leave wifi my phone tells me "Could not activate cellular data network: you are not subscribed to a cellular data service"...

Nope, it should. Here, do this:

Settings > General > Reset > Rest Network Settings

ok, well say I do that and it works... How do I turn it back off? I only have 12MB worth of data for an entire month. I know data is freakin expensive so I DO NOT want to go over.

you can't... just keep checking on your usage...
you can try tweaking the General > Network tabs... but that's all that you can really do, because you do have network activated.
