hhmmm. I guess I will just Leave my data off then..
Any one know if it's possible to have 3g features added to my account?

cspec 08-07-2008 12:43 AM

you can add the 3g plan.
but your phone (1st gen iphone) isn't capable of running 3g speeds

92prelude 08-07-2008 12:58 AM

haha Yeah I know. The 3g data seems to be best bang for the buck though. I haven't seen any data add-ons that work best for the first gen iPhone.
If any one who works for fido knows best here, fill me in. I'm all ears.

Also, 3g has a bundle with 10,000 txt msgs... My local fido (down town victoria) told me I couldn't get it because I don't have a 3g... I'm pretty sure there is a way around it, I just have to know some one willing to help me jump through the hoops so to speak.

Just to let everyone know, apparently Rogers is allowing early HUP (minimum 3 months into your term) AND the tier pricing has been removed (the $100 tier 1 fee, etc) for the iPhone 3G. So if you're at least 3 months into your contract, phone up Rogers and get that iPhone for 199/299 + $35 admin fee or 249/349 + $35 admin fee depending on your service plan. Oh and this is supposed to expire on Aug. 31.

Eight $1,000 App Buyers Later, And Apple Pulls It

Two days ago we wrote about the "I Am Rich" iPhone application, which, for the staggering sum of $1,000, provided you with - get ready for it - a glowing red screen. Although it struck many as a complete waste of money, the application did not seem to be breaking any of the App Store rules and was upfront about its lack of utility. However, a vocal number of observers were shocked by what they saw as a dereliction of gatekeeper "duty" by Apple. Now, in response to the protests, Apple has removed the application without notifying or explaining to the developer why.

But before Apple could do so, 8 willing buyers downloaded the app. In contrast to those calling it a joke or insult, it seems that the application had found a market - the developer netted $5,600 in only a couple hours. Although one reviewer claims to regret buying the app (he thought it was "a joke"), one wonders if Apple should be playing nanny to iPhone owners who make $1,000 jokes, only to regret it. The App Store has only been around for a couple of weeks and, of course, there are going to be kinks to work out. But without clear rules, developers and buyers are going to become increasingly disillusioned with the system. When Apple decided to make it a gated community, they created a false sense of security. And by attempting to recapture that security, they are only moving further from the winning approach - openness.

actually, its MAXIMUM 3 months... so only for new subscribers who signed a contract recently not knowing the iphone was coming... if you've been a customer for 3+ months then you're screwed unless you have less than 14 months remaining on a 3 year contract.

cspec 08-08-2008 04:47 PM

^ my gf just renewed her contract and she's just on for 5 months.

question for those without data plan, or thsoe that would know about it.
If I don't have data plan and there is constantly the "e" symbol(EDGE?) beside the reception bars, am I getting charged for any data transfer or does it just tell me EDGE is available?? thanks

I have no data plan, and disabled my 3G/EDGE through Fido. The "e" is always there, unless I am connected to wifi. Hope that helps!

That's exactly what I wanted to know. How did you get Fido to disable it? I called 3 times talked to 3 different guys and they all said its not possible.

parm104 08-08-2008 08:16 PM

So I renewed my contract in February and picked up a Blackjack 2 from Fido. Read this thread and thought I would give it a shot to get an iphone for cheap.

First the rep said that I have to be in my contract for 14 months. Then I told her about what I had heard about the exception made for iPhones an she put me on hold and said I was right, "if i've been in a contract for a minimum of 90 days, I'm eligible for a new iphone."

I agreed and purchased it and at the end she told me that I was going to have to pay $6.95 licensing fee now (I'm on city fido). I told her I didnt want that and to cancel it and she tells me it has already gone through so I'll just have to mail it back to them when I receive it.

Either way, let it be known that this does work if you've been in a contract for 3 months atleast. However, be sure to work out your SAF issues before ordering.

BS
call customer service tell them to cut off any and all 3g Data. my CSR did it in 2 seconds and the 3G symbol is gone now. if CSR cant do it get transfered to tech support.

wix 08-08-2008 10:40 PM

Ordered the iPhone today, I have a retentions plan with a $20 credit, but I couldn't get that transferred onto my new 3 year agreement because of the iphone, but the retentions rep gave me a $10 monthly credit. No data, got it blocked. Gotta pay a bit more now, but at least i got an iphone!

ienhz 08-09-2008 12:08 AM

lol Rogers' plan was probably to get rid of all those retention deals out there.

:werd:

It kills two birds with one stone because they'll lock all their customers into long term contracts before a new carrier comes in next year while getting rid of retention plans

Simplex123 08-09-2008 06:30 PM

okay i have a question..
when i checked my usage for minutes and stuff today..
i saw that the 'Cellular Network Data' had 17kb - sent and 211kb - received..
does wifi count towards that too? or.. do i have to pay for that.. cuz i don't have a data plan :S

True, but at least I got an iPhone :( haha

Can anyone recommend me a good Bluetooth headset for the iPhone 3G, I've never used one before. Preferably one from Bestbuy or Futureshop, thanks y'all.

Simplex123, I'm not sure if they're gonna charge you, but call customer service, and get the data block, if the CSR doesn't know how to do it, tell them to transfer you to someone else.

parm104 08-09-2008 10:19 PM

Wix,

Purchase a Nokia HB-800 headset. Great battery life, and good sound quality. I think someone on rev is selling one.

calpico 08-09-2008 11:59 PM

I just upgraded today and I was able to get a 16gb iphone. Also, I was able to keep all of my credits as the csr told me it would be transfered to my new contract. I recorded the conversation in case anything gets messed up later. The csr left a note on my account in case as well. If your gonna upgrade your retention plan make sure you have back up.
