Are you using an app on your laptop?

Satellite radio with over 100 stations..

Check out flycast in app store (it's free). I love iPhone haha

SO, I've had my iphone for about 2 months. Its studtastic and I love it to bits.
But I want to Jailbreak.
In your opinion, is it worth putting your 700+ dollar phone on the line for?
Im very hesitant, with reports of iphone bricking.

Jailbreaking voids the warranty.
;(

u sure jailbreaking voids warrenty?
and u paid $700+ for ur iphone?!?

J-force 10-04-2008 11:45 AM

You're tampering with your iphone's software running third party applications that shouldn't be on your iphone. I think sooooooooooo.
Its worth around the 700 dollar price range.
The numerical value was just an indication that was suppose to dictate "Shit, my phone is worth quite a bit of money, should I really tamper with it?"

Just flash it back. It's just a jailbreak, not an unlock....know the difference, it might save your life or something.

Unless you do something stupid to it, there's practically no way to have it go tits up on you. Compared to when the first iPhone came out, the software and jailbreak methods available are simply idiot-proof.

Hondaracer 10-04-2008 03:08 PM

^ very reasuring levitron thanks, i was about to ask..

Im sure this is going to sound like a silly question but to somone who like i said, knows how to do this sort of thing and is very computer literate, is it worth it to jailbreak?

are there a tonne of apps u guys use once you've done yours? i've downloaded pretty much all the Free aps from the store i want, but with the third party are there just a tonne more?

also any SNES or game emulator apps?

How do i know if these jailbreaking methods are the right one for my 3G? yesterday i updated to 2.1 so would this be a good tutorial? :

ok answer to is it worth to jailbreak. here's the break down.

Cons to not jailbreaking:
-no video recording
-no background apps
-no way to tether (netshare no longer on app store)
-no MMS
-you iphone will look like the 10000000000000000000000000000000000000 other iphones around you

cons of jailbreaking:
-need to spend time to do actual jb and setup the phone the way you want
-possible annoyance when upgrading firmware requiring rejb and reinstall of jb apps

just look at both cons see which one you can live with and decide for yourself.
I only listed missing phone functions than jailbreak will enable. These functions should be on every smartphone yet Apple didn't implement it. JB will also unable other functions not mention here but these are what i think addresses most complains with the iphone.

As for problems after jailbreaking? you can go techy and try to fix it thru SSH
or
you can do what owners of unjailbroken phones do when they encounter an unfixable problem:

-Restore.

I have no encounter software problems on the 3g either jb or non jb than cannot be fix with a proper restore.

I hope this stops all the jb or not jb questions

Anyone tried the free Fring app yet? It says you can call people on your msn if they also have the same app running on the iPhone. Basically free long distance calls if the person in your contact list is far away.

Hondaracer 10-04-2008 07:54 PM

ok so just jailbroke mine. everything went perfect

Edit* I'm a big boy and found things on my own!

now.. any aps that cydia doesnt have that i should have?

Also, should u always keep cydia updated? like when it shows the changes etc. should u always download those updates?

i tried it with skype. called a frd that was on skype on her computer. Works fine with a bit of lag so i imagine msn voice calling would work the same.

Only works with wifi.

Hondaracer 10-04-2008 10:09 PM

what does everyone use for MSN messanger? i cant seem to find apollo to download?

i downloaded IM+ but it sucks and it wont let me login, every time i try to go online it just says check email and password, but they are both correct

threezero 10-04-2008 10:18 PM

Beejives if you like being online 24/7 and for it to email you when you get a msg when program not running, conversation history and being able to email the history

palringo if you don't care about being online 24/7 and if you want voice and picture msg.

of course with backgrounder both apps can push notifield.

both available in app store.
palringo-free
beejives-$15

Hondaracer 10-05-2008 12:38 AM

thanks threezero i appreciate your help alot, I know it's always repetetive when people continue to ask the same questions but I always find that to get the most up to date info it's best to ask people who are on top of things

btw, this thing is absolutely retarded, I would probably consider myself a low lvl "nerd" when it comes to technology but i couldnt have imagined the things this iphone can do

92prelude 10-05-2008 11:02 AM

I just heard about this app, but I have no idea what it is called.
You open the app, put your phone to a speaker, and it will tell you what the song is. I think this is pretty wicked, but I have no idea what it's called...
Help me :D

MTV Cribs 10-05-2008 11:04 AM

it's called shazam

92prelude 10-05-2008 11:05 AM

great app, but the reason it's free is that midway through a song an add comes in, does it's speal, then goes back to the song.
Every time you boot up it wants you to make an account... but when they have a button "i'll do it later" it's easy to get around that :P

lol shazam is freaking amazing..

i was in Urban outfitters with my buddy and his GF and it picked up 5 songs in a row that were playing on the speakers inside and it was not loud by any means

pretty amazing what this thing is capable of

92prelude 10-05-2008 11:46 AM

I have yet to test it in the real world, but I held it up to my iMac and played some pretty random electronic music that is pretty rare, and low and behold, the app found it. I was pretty impressed.
