yes the 3G will be able to use the firmware 3.0 with no problems. the 2G iphone can run firmware 3.0, however, it wont be able to utilize the picture and video msging feature.
When will it be released? This summer. Wait for the WWDC when Mr. Jobs gives us concrete dates :)

The new TomTom for Iphone 3Gs, will it be using the data plan, or just the built in GPS? I cant tell

I would hold of and wait on that... the new iPhone may have turn-by-turn navi built in so there will be no reason to have a 3rd party app or device.

The Google Map app will utilize the compass to turn the map depending on how you are oriented. However, the directions feature will be the same (ie: text based).

In order to get true turn by turn navigation with voice prompts you will need to buy the TomTom GPS app.

So you just pay for the app and that's it, right?

Nope, but will probably pick up the new one this summer.

92prelude 06-09-2009 03:48 PM

it may not be 100X better than the 3G, however, it will be SIGNIFICANTLY better than the 2G with firmware 3.0.
I'm upgrading July 25th when I can sign a new contract.

It hasn't been stated yet if the TomTom app is compatible with the 3G. Who knows, maybe the navigation app requires the compass in the 3GS to properly orient itself. I think its also unknown if data is required or not.

Talked to fido today. On July 29th, I will have mine shipped :)

Any idea if the iPhone 3G will be able to do just regular picture MMS? Also does anyone know if the $15 messaging plan on Rogers (2500 sent msgs) include MMS?

at WWDC, it's been announced that the maps have to be provided by third party, and most likely this is predownloaded.. so assume, no data is needed except for the A part in A-GPS... to assist in getting the location faster...

the compass is actually a digital magnetosensor.. orsomething like that...

Ronin 06-17-2009 02:31 AM

Is 3.0 available yet?

hotjoint 06-17-2009 06:42 AM

quick question guys, when we upgrade to 3.0 on our 3g, is there a way to back everything up (even installous downloaded games and other "paid" apps) before we upgrade and re jailbreak? Or do we lose everything and have to do it all over again?

Acura604 06-17-2009 07:33 AM

3.0 patch update available june 17th 10am PST
