ahaaha tavares is worth it...

and on a side note. the NHL GM's are so screwing this league up with the salary inflations... and the 7+ year contract trends... Who knows who will even be a UFA by next year.

Best thing i can think of is building a talented prospect pool.
Hopefully, grabner, hodgson, and the 1st rounders, live up to
their ranking, or even better.

im just sick of seeing teams like tampa who came into the league like 15 years ago and has won a cup already, got two first overalls and can rebuild so quickly while canucks have been in the middle of no where land for the past 40

If we bomb next season, might as well say goodbye to resigning Luongo. I think that the only way he will resign with us is if we do really well next year in and make it far, if not all the way into the post season. Otherwise we might as well look for another goalie. He's in his prime and wants to win a cup before his chances slip away. From the looks of how Tampa is taking alot of the supposed UFA's, the ones who are left are either old or too soft, or don't fit lol. I just hope Gillis does somethign right. Don't want to see another disappointing season.

those long contracts in a salary cap system are used for cost certainty for the future. its usually structured so that a certain percentage of the money is paid within the first 3/4 years of the 8year contract..and so the remaining years will have a smaller cap hit towards the team.
i have no problem with these long contracts..i mean..some of hte younger guys cant qualify for the dreaded no trade clause anywyas, so big or small contract, it can be moved...or even sent to be bought out.

Mo's stock has dropped, but hes useful to alot of teams. nazzy on the other hand..dont think so. I still believe mo didnt get his chance to shine with the club this year, he looked promosing for the limited amount of games he played

who's disappointed with the sedins? Anybody that is disappointed with basically a PPG player for 3.5mil needs to bash their idiot head against a wall and never give their opinion on hockey again.

The Sedin's point production:salary ratio is unheard of, I wouldn't doubt the best in the league (aside from guys under rookie salary limitations).

The cap hit is constant for every year of the contract, the average salary gets counted towards the cap.

Luongo made 6 million last season, 6.5 million this season, 7 the next, and 7.5 in the following but his cap hit is 6.75 million for each of those 4 years.

I think front loading a contract comes into play when a player gets bought out cause 2/3 of the remaining money on the contract gets distributed over the length of the contract. Take Daniel Briere's contract for example (8 years, 52M), he got paid 10 million in the first season but only 2 million for the 8th year. If he is bought out after the 7th year, the Flyers will only take a hit of 2/3's of 2 million distributed over a 8 year period which is only a ~166k cap hit per year. But if the money paid out evenly over those 8 years, 6.5M each year, the buyout would be a ~540k cap hit

I think it's more an issue of availability at the time. Sure a player might not be the greatest right wing ever, but if he's the best out of the ones available, and if more than one team wants him, it will come down to who will pay him the most...So the money thing (to me at least), is more indicative of how badly a team needs the player, than how much he is actually worth.

In honour of Spain's win at the European Championship, here's something else that delivers every 44 years: the Monday morning musings and meditations on the world of sports.

- Free-agent season opens tomorrow but if Canucks' fans think their team can re-invent itself with a few crafty signings, they're dreaming in technicolour. Of all the ways to improve an NHL lineup -- trades, player development, drafting, etc. -- free agency is by far the least efficient and the most dangerous. It can be a useful tool if a team is looking to fill one or two specific needs. Beyond that, you're generally looking at players whose value has been artificially inflated.

Take the case of Ryan Malone, who has reportedly agreed to, yikes, a seven-year, $31.5-million deal with Tampa. Over the last three seasons, Malone has produced 22, 16 and 27 goals while seeing considerable playing time with Sidney Crosby.

He's a decent player who offers size and some grit. But Tampa brought him in to complement 18-year-old Steve Stamkos and the problem there is Stamkos isn't Crosby and Malone isn't a first-liner.

True, there is an element of instant gratification in a signing like that but four years down the road, when your payroll is jammed up with a 20-goal scorer making $4.5 million, it's not nearly as exciting.

- The other part of the equation with the Canucks is, can they attract the top free agents in the first place?

Money, of course, is a central component to any potential deal but there are a number of other considerations -- the chance of winning, the stability of the organization, the team's makeup -- and you can question where the Canucks rate in those areas.

Marian Hossa, for example, has already turned down seven years at $7 million per to play with the Penguins. It's difficult to see what the Canucks offer that the Penguins can't, and if Hossa is swayed by the difference between $7 million a year and $8 million a year, do you really want him on your team?

- Then there's the Lightning. Current GM Jay Feaster, who appears to be the GM in name only, is currently trying to maintain his sanity while the new ownership group of Oren Kouleas and Len Barrie plays with their toy. Word at the draft was other GMs were calling Feaster with trade offers made by Kouleas and Barrie. As we've said about the Canucks, this arrangement might work.

We just have our doubts.

- The big talk in CFL circles concerns the threat of the Buffalo Bills moving to Toronto but after watching games in Week 1, the league's larger problem is its on-field product. The CFL built its brand on exciting, wide-open football but, over the last two seasons it's devolved into a three-down version of the NFL with plodding, stale offences

The problem's also easy to identify. Since rosters were expanded from 37 players to 42, coaches have used the extra manpower on defence, specifically the secondary where every team employs a variety of six- and seven-DBs cover schemes. If you want to keep the expanded roster, fine. But the league must readjust the import ratio if it wants to maintain its entertainment value.

- It's kind of funny. While a great hue and cry emanates from Toronto over the endlessly fascinating subject of Mats Sundin's future, there's barely been a peep about Joe Sakic's possible retirement from Colorado.

Throughout his career, Burnaby Joe has managed to fly under the radar while building a c.v. which ranks with any player of his generation. He's captained three Stanley Cup winners; won a Conn Smythe and a Hart; and has scored 623 goals and recorded 1,629 points in 19 seasons. Somewhere in there, he found time to lead Canada to the Olympic gold medal in Salt Lake City.

I mean, that career should be the subject of a National Film Board documentary. But know this about Sakic. While a larger recognition might elude him, there isn't a person in hockey who isn't fully aware of what he's meant to the game.

the more moves other teams in the NW make.. the more i think MG is trying to sign a big named forward... which is probally consuming all his time, he is new, im not sure he knows how to handle it and explore other options.

Look at Vrbata.. got signed for 3mil.
Thats a pretty nice price for a skilled player.
Ryder would be at a decent price to, even though he lacks consistancy, it wouldnt be the worst signing in the past 3 seasons..

Gillis has been TOO silent... Calm before the storm.

I have a bad feeling that Gillis is going to get shut out from all the wheeling and dealing. He must've burnt a lot of bridges when dealing the GMs in the past as an agent.
